Cuba occupies a place of undisputed fascination in the American psyche. Despite its proximity to America, this island nation remains a mystery to most Americans. Few Americans have traveled to Havana, and still fewer have traveled deeper into this isolated country. Chris Messner, a photographer, is one of the few Americans who have been able to travel extensively throughout this island. In his book, Cuba Open from the Inside, Messner documents the character of Cuba's people, its rich history, and the vast culture of the country. As Cuba's leaders age and the possibility of travel to Cuba increases, this book acts as an exceptional resource for would be travelers. Through multiple journeys, Messner has covered more than 4,000 miles on the back roads of Cuba. The author is drawn to the beauty of the countryside, and especially to the history of the island as written in its monuments, buildings and churches. Without taking sides on the present political situation of the country, the author gives us glimpses of the poverty and lack of freedom of its people as he proceeds on his odyssey. Guided by a Cuban who becomes a good and steadfast friend, Mr. Messner travels the breadth and lenght of the island, sometimes facing real danger on rough and uncharted roads. Through it all, we are treated to the sights, sounds, color and tastes of a fascinating land, whose people face the challenges confronting them with grace and good humor. The finale has a bit of suspense, as Mr. Messner tries to extricate himself from Cuba without falling into the clutches of a customs "Comandante".I rate it five stars, for the honest and genuine way in which Mr. Messner guides us through his experiences, and for the opportunity of seeing through his eyes a Cuba that hasn't been seen before by outsiders. The urgency of his tale is his fear that, once open to the outside world, that Cuba will be lost forever.

Cuba, the real thing By BigedIV Cris Messner has seen the real Cuba, the one that wouldn't be in travel magazines, if there were any about our neighbor to the South. An honest and touching account of his automotive voyage of discovery, it is both personal and revealing. Revealing about life in Cuba as well as the discoveries of an American in a very strange land. I'm reminded of the early explorer accounts of life in Africa or Araby where what is discovered can be beautiful but also disturbing. It's also the story of an plain American who writes what he feels as he feels it.Chris and his guide Jesus, weather potholes and police, while finding the world of ordinary Cubans working within "the system" and making it work for them. Not a travelogue, with restaurants reviews and accommodation ratings, it tells the story of Cuba now, and its people. You could never do his visit yourself, but letting him take you on it is well worth the time and the rereading.A paperback version of his photographs does not do them justice but, look for them on the web.

Cuba is still so mysterious and is uniquely frozen in time and this book allowed me to see close-up what life is like before it all disappears. The author seemed put his heart into this book. It felt like relaxed, down-to-earth, storytelling; as if he were writing a personal letter. Many passages were eloquently heartfelt and deeply philosophical. His adventures were suspenseful, fascinating and informative. Cuba's history is full of color and passion - from pirate raids to revolutions. I was also entertained with the many humorous anecdotes of the author's traveling experiences and the wonderful friendships he made.Messner undeniably has an artist's eye for composition, not only in his photographic images but also in his written word.
