Murray Having, like the author, grown up in Faribault County in southern Minnesota and graduated from Blue Earth High School, and remembering the widow Susan Eisele doggedly using a big and boxy camera to take photos for the local newspaper, I had a personal interest in the biography of the parents of the author, Albert A. Eisele (who went on to be press secretary for Vice President Walter Mondale, who also grew up in Faribault County and to write a dual biography, Almost to the Presidency, about two other Minnesota senators, Eugene McCarthy and Hubert Humphrey). I did not know that the author's father, Albert E. Eisele, had cranked out short stories, many of which were published in Catholic magazines. Both Susan and Albert E. wrote weekly columns for southern Minnesota (and northern Iowa) newspapers, as well as one on which they collaborated ("Countryside") which Susan continued through her lengthy widowhood.There is, alas, exceedingly little of memories from Albert A. in the book. Almost everything in it derives from manuscripts and clippings from newspapers and magazines by or about his parents. Their careers as writers for rural newspapers (syndicated columns) and in the case of Albert E. as a contributor of close-to-the-earth stories published in American Catholic periodicals while farming and raising children (three boys of whom Albert A. was the youngest survived childhood). Susan wrote fast, her husband slowly. Alas there is not the slightest indication of how Albert A. or his older brothers felt about the time their parents’ writing took — or how they felt about their parents’ minor fame in rural northern Iowa and southern Minnesota and in national Catholic periodicals, along with something of a fifteen minutes of national celebrity Susan had, being named the country’s outstanding rural journalist for 1936 and invited to New York City and D.C. with the newly born Albert A.Six previously published stories by Albert E. Eisele are appended to the text and show a Chekhovian focus on situations of rural folk. Regretably, only two of Susan's columns are included, in effect twice (images of the original publications and the text), none of the five nominated for the award she won as best rural journalist of 1936.
