Eugene de Kock has the blood of dozens of people on his hands. To most South Africans he is the monster from Vlakplaas. Nonetheless, Anemari Jansen was intrigued by him when she met him in 2011 in Pretoria Central Prison. How could the prisoner "with the soft voice" be reconciled with the man dubbed "Prime Evil"? Jansen's search for answers led her across the country, to De Kock's family, friends, and former Koevoet and Vlakplaas colleagues, who revealed much about him. She also quotes extensively from De Kock's diaries and an unpublished manuscript. In his own words, De Kock is scathingly honest: about the atrocities he committed, about the superiors from whom he received his orders - and about his shame. This book paints a picture of a highly intelligent, complex individual. It sheds light not only on De Kock's choices, but also on South Africa's recent past, in a revelatory and often shocking way.

About the Author In 2011 Anemari Jansen unexpectedly got an opportunity to meet Eugene de Kock in jail. She was immediately fascinated by the man "with the soft voice", the former commander of Vlakplaas who was dubbed Prime Evil by the media. She won De Kock's trust and for the next three years went on a journey to find out more about the man behind the persona and the era in which he committed his crimes: she visited Vlakplaas, did countless interviews with his former Koevoet and Vlakplaas colleagues and Sunday after Sunday visited De Kock in the old Pretoria Central prison. Jansen simply had to know: How did it happen that De Kock could commit such heinous crimes? Her search for answers took her across the country and changed her life irrevocably. Jansen's debut novel, called Glipstroom, was published by Tafelberg in 2014. She has an MA in Afrikaans from the former RAU and a BA (HOD) from the University of Pretoria. Since 2012 she has been writing articles for the online police magazine eNongqai.

By James Hooper [ASIN:0957058705 Koevoet: Experiencing South Africa's Deadly Bush War]In the months leading up to publication of “Eugene de Kock – Assassin for the State,” I wondered what author Anemari Jansen could add to previous books about the man or the thousands of character-assassinating column inches in the press. My uncertainty was misplaced. Despite having covered southern Africa in depth during much of the time frame in this book, I learned behind-the-scenes details not previously known. Another pleasant surprise was the clear, easy-to-follow chronology of the era in which De Kock lived; his metamorphosis from awkward youth to legendary counter-insurgency operator. Jansen’s efforts are a model for every would-be author setting out to compose a first biography. Backgrounding with hundreds of hours of interviews and research, she steers a steady and balanced course from beginning to end. Her creation will disappoint enemies wanting a hatchet job and friends preferring a hagiography. Equally impressive is a literary style that compels the reader to turn the page. Stripped of sensationalism, Jansen writes with a sure and confident hand. Whether the story of the most maligned figure of apartheid South Africa, or victim of a Stalinist show trial that made him a pantomime villain and scapegoat for his superiors - the book is necessary reading for any serious student of those times.

Fascinating read By Wolfnuf Very interesting biography, though in focuses more on the man himself and his journey to redemption, than on the events that lead him to prison.Colonel de Kock did what he thought was necessary to maintain some order in a country that was rapidly descending into chaos, and where all sides were committing atrocities. At least he shows some remorse, unlike many others who also committed crimes during this period, but never went to jail for them.

By indigovenice The author makes some interesting insights into a story that frightens most people and asks the question: Who is the man behind the media hype of Prime Evil, and asks what would or could make someone, anyone, do the things that he did? This is not a story of conventional murder inspired by racial hatred, but the age old archetype of a soldier. The author does not seek to excuse or atone, but to understand. How we as readers understand or categorize soldiers, whether as heroes or as villains, very much depends upon our point of view. This book takes a peek behind the curtain, to see what happened behind the scenes, and to see what happened in the bigger picture. The three-dimensional view of this piece of history is a far more interesting story than the one-dimensional media hype that all we already know.Furthermore, the author has an engaging writing style with such quotable phrases as: "I drove back to my husband and children, to a safe, warm house, and it hit me like a thunderbolt that I knew nothing about the times and events that had clattered like gunfire from his mouth"Prepare yourself for a very interesting and insightful story!
