Stress: Living and Working in a Changing World, by George Manning, Kent Curtis, Steve McMillen, Bill Attenweiler About the Author George Manning, Professor of Psychology and Business at Northern Kentucky University, is internationally known as a speaker, author of eleven books, and consultant to business, industry and government. His clients include AT&T, AMA, IBM, GE, Marriott, UAW, Duke Energy, US Navy and the National Institutes of Health, among others. He was selected "Outstanding Professor" at Northern Kentucky University and has received the "Strongest Influence Award" given by the Northern Kentucky Alumni Association. Kent Curtis is professor of organizational leadership at Northern Kentucky University. Kent graduated from Centre College (AB in Biology), Xavier University (Masters in Counseling), and University of Cincinnati (Doctorate in Education). He has designed numerous employee and management development programs serving such clients as Texas Medical Center, Procter & Gamble, and American Electric Power. Kent has received the Strongest Faculty Influence Award from the NKU Alumni Association, the NKU Student Government Faculty Award, and Teacher of The Year for the NKU PACE Division. Steve McMillen is the founder and principal of SMC Leadership, a consultancy focused on executive coaching, leadership development, talent management, organizational change, and stress management. Steve has held senior leadership positions at organizations including Tennessee Valley Authority, Thomson Publishing (now Thomson-Reuters), and Hillenbrand Industries where he led the development of the first Peak Performance Center for a Fortune 500 company. He has consulted for numerous organizations, including General Motors, Junior Achievement, and the National Home Builders Association. He was a founding member for The Conference Board’s Global Leadership Development Council and Harvard University Business School’s New Media Group. Steve has served on boards at the University of Tennessee, Northern Kentucky University and People Answers, among others. Bill Attenweiler earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Clemson University in 2002. Upon completion of his graduate studies, Bill moved to Northern Kentucky University and launched the Master of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology program. He was associate dean of NKU’s College of Arts and Sciences and director of Integrative Studies for four years. Bill has returned to teaching both graduate and undergraduate classes, including Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Occupational Health Psychology.

A well founded, theoretically based self-help book By Ling Xiao This book, it seems to me, has at least two dimensions: one as a psychology textbook with a focus on stress, and the other as a self-help book to cope with stress. Because of my study, work, and life experience, I was able to look into both dimensions, albeit probably with limited understanding. Here I will try to tell you a few words how this book seems to me with these two perspectives.As a textbook, and to me as an outsider looking into psychology (I study business as related to psychology and behavior), I find it a useful book that connects various theories related to stress. Stress doesn't seem to be a distinct academic domain, but the authors have artfully and skillfully connected different theories with this real life problem of stress. This approach instills academic rigor in this whole book. If you are like me, you would like to know that studying stress is not alchemy; it's real science. Students in psychology may find it a promising field, and those in stress may be more convinced with the advice, which is supported by evidence and theories.As a self help book, the insights from the authors are valuable. I know you probably heard a lot of this about other books too, and there is no shortage of self help books out there. But what I want to emphasize is that, you want to follow real advice from those who practice what they preach. I happen to know one of the authors of this book, and I can attest to it that this author, from the last ten years that I know him, has a balanced life, looks to the long term, cares about others, and in the meantime maintains a successful, demanding career. This is the kind of people you want to hear from when you have difficulty with stress, work, and life. I have to say that I'm really not into the kind of advice from those who haven't been there and have little idea what work stress is about.One caution though. This is a dense book. I'm reading it the second time now. The first time just took one week as I read through quickly to get the ideas. But now I realize that, like some other reviewers have said, it might be better to read a couple pages, pause and think and reflect on your own life, and read on. Give yourself some time to absorb the wisdom from the authors, and the theories cited by the authors.

Love This is by far one of the most important resource references I own for my professional career. I have also found it to be quite beneficial for my personal life as well. This book is a critical asset for anyone that works in the field of Human Resources, stress management, leadership development, and career coaching.It has wonderful assessments and exercises, is very readable, and user friendly. I have found the concepts very relevant for topics such as leadership resiliency, employee engagement, time management, dealing with personal and organizational stress, achieving personal and professional effectiveness, & communication and interpersonal dynamics.The content has excellent application for all facets of business life from manufacturing to healthcare.Having a healthcare background, I am very impressed with the application this books provides for all dimensions of Wellness and is an excellent resource for any Wellness Initiative.The learning tools provide very usable approaches for addressing the issues around stress, which is a wonderful part of this book. The comprehensive background regarding stress is well founded and the methodologies and techniques for addressing stress issues are sound and useful. The new sections to the learning tools portion of the book, for work satisfaction, time management, and personality factor applications are great and timely additions.Having known George Manning and Steve McMillen professionally, this book reflects their practical and aligned approach to interactions that are meaningful and impactful. This new edition provides the most current data and adds new stories and insights that will help you take live your life to the fullest. Highly recommended.Many people feel torn by competing priorities. No matter how hard they work, they don't feel successful in any area of life. Work, study, parenting, even play—there doesn't seem to be enough time to do anything well.
