This book presents a nonmedical model of psychotherapy one that places common factors, particularly human factors, at the center and moves modalities and techniques to the periphery. In a concise volume, Elkins summarizes the supporting evidence from various fields, including clinical psychology, attachment theory, social relationships research, neuroscience, and evolutionary theory. All of these fields show that humans are evolved to develop, maintain, and restore our emotional well-being through human connection and social interaction. Thus, psychotherapy can best be understood as an expression of social healing. After presenting this model and its vast supporting evidence, Elkins then discusses important implications for clinical research, training, and practice. The book also features a foreword by Barry L. Duncan, author of On Becoming a Better Therapist.

By northern californian This is an excellent and important book for all interested in the practice and science of psychotherapy. Currently there is a battle in the field over whether therapy should focus on the use of techniques or whether therapy is primarily a matter of a healing relationship. Those who support the technique side claim that their's is the “scientific” side. In this book Elkins shows that the evidence actually is more supportive of the relationship side. He draws on a wide range of research, including research on psychotherapy but also research in human development and in evolutionary theory. He then discusses implications for therapy practice. This book should be useful to students studying to be psychotherapists, psychotherapy practitioners who want to be able to argue that providing a relationship-focused approach is evidence-based, and to clients who may be considering what kind of psychotherapy they want.

Nonmedical Model of Healing By Eugene May Drawing from clinical experience, attachment theory and social relationships research, neuroscience and evolutionary theory, and example of the moral treatment era, Elkins presents support for a nonmedical model of treatment.. Whatever the therapist does is always in context of human beings, one needing help and one meeting patient needs. Cultivating the human elements supports a nonmedical model of therapy, which the author elucidates, providing implications for research, training, and practice. Given prevalence today of medical model teaching and practice with scarce if any attention to cultivating therapy relationships, this book is much needed now.
