Moon Brazil, by Michael Sommers

About the Author Born in Texas and raised in Toronto, Michael Sommers grew up with travel on the brain—a consequence of time spent riding around in Oldsmobiles, Mini Mokes, and Pan Am jets in the company of a Gourmet-addicted mother and a father with a roving zoom lens. When Michael turned 18 he took flight, setting down temporary roots in cities such as Bordeaux, Paris, Montreal, New York, and Lisbon. During this time, he earned a BA in Literature from McGill University and an MA in History and Civilizations from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, where his thesis was “The Image of Brazil and Brazilians in Hollywood Cinema.” He also worked as a writer and editor at magazines and newspapers and freelanced for publications such as The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, and The Globe and Mail.Michael first traveled to Brazil at the age of four. His only memory is that of being served a glistening orange wedge of papaya in the grand dining room at Rio de Janeiro’s Hotel Gloria. Twenty years later, he returned to Brazil, where he was seduced by the intense, colorful landscapes, rich cultures, and warm people. Michael eventually settled down in Salvador, the baroque capital of Bahia, where he has worked as a writer and journalist for over 15 years. While Michael has yet to master the art of preparing feijoada (Brazil’s national stew of beans, salted beef, and pork), he does make a mean caipirinha.

In Search of Old Peking is much more than a classic guide book: it is both a painstakingly constructed portrait of one of the world’s great cities in the 1930’s and a lament for the end of a unique era. L.C. Arlington was an American who had served in the Customs and Postal Administrations since his arrival in China in 1879; William Lewisohn, a British Army officer turned journalist. These unlikely but happy partners had seen Peking at the pinnacle of its glory. This book is the outcome of their determination to record the delights, both major and minor, of the city they had known. The descriptions of the buildings and monuments are set within the wider context of Chinese history and are entertainingly illuminated by anecdotes about northern Chinese life and customs. First published in 1935, this book was regarded as the standard guide to Peking. It remains astonishingly evocative today, for residents and visitors alike.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Superb In-Depth Description of 1930's Peking By A Customer Wonderful, evocative account of old Peking before the mass destruction by the current regime. This book reads like the wonderful Blue Guides of Europe (before Blue Guide recently changed the format and gutted so much of the information). The extent of description is amazing - the Lama Temple's rituals, for example, involving canabalism in pantomine: the monks worked themselves into a frenzy and then tore to shreds a man-like figure made of dough and filled with red liquid jam - mess everywhere!. The authors also recommended that tourists of the day go armed in the temple because of the determined attentions (ahem!) of the monks.I used this book as a guide in the 90's while living in Hong Kong and visiting Peking - it still had great value despite all the losses (the coverage of the Forbidden City is incredible) I found many interesting out-of-the-way spots I would have missed if I'd relied on my strangely (sadly) poor Blue Guide China. In Search of Peking is one of those books (like Austin Coates' Myself a Mandarin for Hong Kong) that will really make you glad you lived (or visited) in China, despite all the modern concrete.

30 Days with Sarah is the real-life account of a social I experiment I don’t recommend anybody to do. After my girlfriend broke up with me, we decided to move into a room together, as a social experiment to confront our dark emotions and to see if it really wasn’t working between us. What followed was the most intense month of my life, what followed were 30 Days with Sarah.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Emotional rollercoaster By Sandy This book catches you. Tom Riverton is able to keep the anticipation on a high level.Personally, I had a love-hate relationship with this book. I was all curious about this kind of experiment. For approx. half of the book I was thrilled, expectant, I was able to relate through the hopes, desires, the pain, sometimes worried and often surprised. Over all, my emotions where on the positive side but then in the middle of the book (and very suddenly) I got all negative, aggressive. The female protagonist really got to me and at the end I disliked her so much I was filled with anger. So this is what I liked a lot. An interesting experiment which I wouldn't dare to do myself. The consequences, the outcome. The author takes you on a journey through a lot of different emotions. Emotions, thoughts, new ideas, reflection was what I was seeking for. And I got it all.

It is a simple story yet all of life is in the telling. My brother Jim and I were born in a small Southern town in the Southwest corner of Georgia. In the springtime large magnolia trees blossomed sprinkling the neighborhoods with their lovely white bouquets. Yellow daffodils filled the air with their sanguine fragrance. The summers brought Spanish moss that hung high from large oak trees and swayed in the summer breezes. We walked barefoot skipping along unpaved roads and rode our bicycles to the nearby creek where we scavenged for crayfish. There was a sweetness that pervaded our lives. Yet appearances were paramount, silence was golden, gossip was shared, and secrets were hidden. There was an unstated proper order to this tranquil life. It was not to be disturbed…. And yet it was, generation after generation after generation. What is the evidence?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. which was recommended to me By Jane Zamoyski Having been a victim of abuse myself, it took several days to get up the courage to read this book, which was recommended to me. The book is beautifully written and it was so easy and pleasurable to relate to the iconic images and experiences of growing up in the 1950s and '60s even though I was not from the South. As the story unfolded, I was struck by Jeanne's honesty; she made me see and understand how the innocent love between daughter and mother could be fractured by secrets and shame; reshaped into denial and addiction through silence. I was captivated by the last few chapters in her book; mesmerized, sobbing and finally uplifted. Jeanne's journey is symbolic of millions of we women who kept 'the shameful secret' and paid the price; however, in sharing her story, she heals us with the light of her healing. It is a courageous book, honest, soulful and in the end, necessary. Even if you have not had a similar 'secret shame', Jeanne's story will assist you in understanding the millions of women who have. And, may even enlighten one regarding the effect of the secrets we still carry in our silent places. I hope you will give it a chance.

About the Author Author: Lisa Manzione The Bella and Harry series of children's books is Lisa Manzione's first foray into children's fiction writing.  As a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Lisa's entrance into the field of literature is one she has eagerly awaited and is very passionate about.  As the daughter of a single parent who worked for a major airline, Lisa's exposure to (and interest in) travel began at an early age.  Later in life, as Lisa's own children grew up and her love of animals continued, the idea for the Bella and Harry series was born.  Illustrator: Kristine Lucco Born in rural Pennsylvania, Kristine's passion for art began at a young age. This interest in art continued and ultimately led Kristine to study at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Now a mother of two avid junior readers, Kristine’s unique talent and particular flair for children’s themes has evolved quite naturally into the world of children’s books and illustrations. She is quick to credit her own children for inspiring this phase of her art, as it is often conceived by seeing the characters and places through their eyes. In addition to her work on the Bella and Harry series, Kristine has also illustrated the most recently recognized children’s book, “Wacky Jacky, The True Story of an Unlikely Beauty Queen”.

Bella and Harry, the intrepid Chihuahua pups visit the Land of the Pharaohs By Z Hayes My eight-year-old daughter and I have been following the exploits of Chihuahua pup Bella and her younger brother Harry for some time now and this is Book Four in their adventures. This time, the adventurous siblings visit Egypt, together with their human family. The books in the series do a wonderful job of introducing children to the delights of travel, learning about other cultures, and experiencing the wonders of the world at large. In "Let's Visit Cairo!", Bella and Harry begin the Egyptian tour by visiting the Pyramids of Giza which are over 4,500 years old. As they trek through the desert, Harry learns about camels and how they store their fat, which enables them to go for long periods of time without food. They then visit the Great Sphinx and adorable little Harry daydreams about becoming a pharaoh! The illustration depicting Harry in pharaoh garb is really cute and will have children exclaiming out loud. The siblings travel to other places of interest such as The Museum of Antiquities where they learn about mummies and King Tut before they go off to explore the Valley of the Kings located in Luxor, Egypt. Here the siblings learn about the great pharaoh Ramesses II or Ramesses the Great and what hieroglyphics are.The siblings also learn other things about Egyptian culture such as the food and some common phrases in Arabic. The accompanying illustrations provide young readers with a colorful portrait of this exotic land of pharaohs and will inspire young children to learn more about Egypt, its history, and its customs. My daughter and I look forward to reading more about Bella and Harry's global adventures!

I started it for my 4 year old neighbor, some for her birthday, Halloween (Greece because she was a greek goddess), some at Christmas, and then one on Valentine's day. When she opened her present her eyes lit up. Her mom says she loves to learn and go on adventures with Bella & Harry. Will be purchasing the rest of the series for her!

Perfect to introduce young kids to different places around the world By Amazon Customer I work as a school librarian in a K-12 school and my elementary students just loved Bella and Harry. I got 8 of the books in the library and set them out on the shelves and they were all checked out within the first 3 days of being put up. The art in the books is very well-drawn and gives the reader a feel for the country the dogs are visiting. At the same time the illustrations are very colorful and perfect for making a young kid want to pick it up. The books are stocked with information about the different country the main characters are visiting. This information is presented in a fun and engaging conversation between the two cute dogs, Bella and Harry. This book series is one younger children would enjoy for the pictures and the fun characters, but it is also one slightly older children would find useful and informative in learning about different countries and places around the world.

Spurr This collection of essays had me smiling, laughing and near tears and is for any reader who wants to travel the world with armchair adventure. During some of the author's essays I held my breath hoping for a good ending. I only want more from this author and can't wait for the next collection of humorous, fun, wonderful adventures.

A Jewel, in Fact a Diamond of a Book By fz This amazing book written by a woman who has lived a full and meaningful life can benefit readers of all ages and interests. I shared it with a 97 year old friend who had an equally exciting and well lived life. She commented that she loved the book and felt as though Beth Gawain has had an extraordinary life and has recorded aspects of it beautifully in Let's Talk Story. I can recommend it without reservation for anyone looking for a way to be inspired and delighted. In 22 essays she writes about what counts in life, being patient, living life to the fullest, counting blessings, etc.Take a chance and buy this book. You'll love it from start to finish.

By mediagoddess To be published at any time in one's life is a joy, and to present a series of short stories about one's life from the wisdom of 94 years on this planet is mastery. You'll admire Beth Gawain's choices throughout this little gem of a memoir - choices like quitting a prestigious job at 53 to travel the world and explore new cultures, choosing natural childbirth in the late 1940's when it was frowned upon, recalling beautiful romantic moments sitting by a Midwestern lake and later choosing not to say yes to that particular love...and onward. These short stories from Beth's long life will make you think about your own life and the choices you've made and are making - and even though they are small, they are nuggets of joy and will make an impression for a long, long time.

American Notes is a travelogue by Charles Dickens detailing his trip to North America from January to June, 1842. Whilst there he acted as a critical observer of North American society, almost as if returning a status report on their progress. This can be compared to the style of his Pictures from Italy written four years later, where he wrote far more like a tourist. His American journey was also an inspiration for his novel Martin Chuzzlewit.

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Excellent piece of history By Seth Davidson By the time Dickens made his first trip to the U.S., he had already achieved extraordinary fame, having completed The Pickwick Papers, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, and Barnaby Rudge. He was 30, and at the peak of his energy, if not yet at the height of his literary powers.American Notes has a few passages that qualify as some of Dickens's very best. It's worth reading just for his account of the Atlantic passage, as the combination of humor, terror, and blunt-trauma reality of sailing across the Atlantic in a wooden ship is one of the finest pieces of nautical writing ever done.American Notes is exactly what the title suggests: a compilation of disconnected observations that are loosely tied together by what is ostensibly a fact finding mission to learn about progressive institutions such as prisons and homes for the handicapped. These jottings come to fruition in a full blown novel when Dickens writes Martin Chuzzlewit.By itself, American Notes is a brilliant journal of how the U.S. appeared to a liberal Englishman in the middle of the 19th Century. Dickens's comments on slavery, on the lives of African-Americans in New York, on the prairie, and on spitting are as interesting and occasionally funny to read today as they must have been 160 years ago. The best thing about American Notes is that you can buy it as part of the 200+ Works of Charles Dickens collection for your Kindle, and sample as much or as little of it as strikes your fancy.

PFAUTZ This is Charles Dickens' unvarnished view of America in 1842 when our Revolution was less than 70 years old. For six months he toured the northeastern states, venturing as far west as Cincinnati and south to Richmond, while collecting observations of American folkways that he lampooned in typical Dickens fashion. His descriptions of Washington D.C. and its lawmakers should not be missed and are prescient of what would be Mark Twain's satiric sense. Referencing Washington's street design of boulevards and avenues Dickens related that it was often referred to as the "City of Magnificent Distances", but Dickens thought "City of Magnificent Intentions" might be a better descriptor - perhaps still a figurative portrayal for our time.Dickens pulls no punches in his account of a country mired in the slavery controversy between Free States and Slave States, and additionally describes the dismal situation in American prisons and asylums. For me it was most difficult to assimilate the Slavery chapter which included American newspaper clippings of slave sales and "Runaway Slave" classifieds - truly a sad report on the pre-Civil War United States.Reading this as an historical document I strongly recommend the Kindle version so you can utilize the e-dictionary and Internet as you experience Dickens vivid command of the English language in this remarkable journey.

I found it eye opening of American cities and their beginnings, and of Charles Dickens' opinion of places, compared to England. The boat and train rides would have been tough to endure, The atrocities he saw of the Black Slaves, and his sympathies toward them was, as always to me, appalling. He saw so much in his travels, some were very humorous, but his descriptions were very vivid.

I had expcted a fast-moving story with an exciting plot. The descriptions of the main characters should have been elaborated more. They are described in a superficial way. When reading the book, I didn't get the feeling of knowing the main characters intimately [unlike other crime novels I've read].Dispite all this, I think it is a good thing that there are French-language Kindle books available at amazon.com. Because I am a resident in Norway, I am not allowed to buy a Kindle device from amazon.fr (in France). The vast majority of French-language books being published each year, are not available in amazon.com's Kindle Store.

By Martha O'Brien Sorry--I can't remember whether the book is narrated in the first or third person or alternating persons and don't have it with me to check. As for the violence and sexual content questions, I guess that whether the violence and sexual content are "graphic" or "explicit" depends on your point of view. The experiences of a German child who survived World War II in Berlin, and who was taken to England where he grew conscious of how the land of his birth had become a pariah among nations. He struggles to retain whatever positive shreds of German identity might be salvaged from the horrors of National Socialist atrocities. Still a boy, he made his way to America as an unaccompanied immigrant to forge a new life from which he never looked back. This is an American story about never quitting.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Why we fight By Hans Joachim Koerver Erik is a friend of mine and he let me read his book before it was published. As a German, born 1960, I am very deeply impressed. The different lifes he lived as a German, as an Englishmen, as American in the Army, in Vietnam, in academic circles, in the Navy. This book really enriched my views. Specially as a German - I would recommend it everybody of my generation here, but also every one else interested in our post world war II and cold war formed societies. Everything was so clear then, everything was black or white, good or bad, not this endless shades of grey of our present ...I do not share every point of view with him, but he makes me re-think a lot of of our common trans-atlantic history and culture. My french wife and me just re viewed the first and the last two episodes of Spielbergs "Band of Brothers". "Why we figth" for example, when american soldiers liberated the victims of a Nazi concentration camp, but also showed respect to their beaten foe. Thats the idealistic America of my younger days, that I (and the rest of the world, I guess) would like to see again, and that Erik made me understand better. As a German: his views about the the systematic air bombings and the Morgenthau-driven post-war hunger policy against the German civil population is something you cannot even mention in a debate in Germany. "America liberated us, fed and reconstructed us with the Marshall-plan, so we became friends and finally allies." Thats the official view here, no discussion about.Recently Germany is helping and offering help to hundred of thousands of immigrants coming yearly from the devastated areas of the Middle East and Africa. Thats the Germany I am proud of.Under real friends, based on a common 18th century culture of rationalism, we should be able to tell us the truth: we have been bitter foes and we are now real friends. America and the Americans have re-baptisized Germany (and Japan and Italy) and brought us back on the way.Thats what I learned from Eriks book.Danke, Erich.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfully Inspiring and Insightful! By Coffee Frog Erik is a true Shakespearean character set within "All the world is a stage and we are but characters on it." We follow Erik on his journey - the Hero's Journey - in three different countries - Germany, England and the U.S. through childhood, adulthood, career and conscious elder-hood. His truly colorful life is both a joy and heartache as the reader embraces his words. We see glimpses of ourselves in the stories, realizing even across oceans, ages, gender lines, careers and generations, we are all experiencing the "human condition." Our journeys may be different, yet our experiences and lessons are similar - running a common ground of the emotional gamut.Whilst reading the book, it is evident that the author is a well-trained wordsmith, historian and master of English Literature making this book well worth the read. It is a song of a life well lived. I am Eric(k) and Bobbie's neighbor. It is an honor and a privilege to live next door and to get this intimate, personal and heartfelt view into the life of another. I wholeheartedly recommend reading "The Kraut!" (CMA Courter)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. People fight for their country, right or wrong!! By F.J. Reinisch As the author is "a friend of a friend" I knew something about his Naval background. Reading the book is a very impressive task. It's not a standard bio but gives a broad insight into the thinking of a real brave man. To understand his position in the US Vietnam (pre-) war situation especially compared to the pot smoking peace generation. He also delivers some very interesting background information about FORGETTING and NOT FORGETTING political and ethical dependencies after WWII. Italy is good, Germany is bad. Hunger as part of the political game. Not always what I expected to read, not always what I want to read but a very impressive life anyway and a must read for every person interested in the understanding of historical backgrounds.... When the Editor of Everywoman's World asked me to write "The Story of My Career," I smiled with a little touch of incredulous amusement. My career? Had I a career? Was not -- should not -- a "career" be something splendid, wonderful, spectacular at the very least, something varied and exciting? Could my long, uphill struggle, through many quiet, uneventful years, be termed a "career"? It had never occurred to me to call it so; and, on first thought, it did not seem to me that there was much to be said about that same long, monotonous struggle.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. one of the must-reads for any LMM fans! By C. N. Seong I have read quite a number of versions of LMM's biographies, and I think this one is one of the best. Although this isn't as rich in content as the LMM Album or the four volumes of LMM's own journals, this book is already able to give the readers the enough information that a LMM fan will want to know about this wonderful story-teller. Besides, I think this book is very suitable for teenagers to read, very suitable for beginners of LMM fans who want to know more about this author of the famous Anne books. A very enjoyable and quick read, but at the same time, very informative.

I mean....read this! :) By Bitsy Pookums One would think, when picking up an autobiography, that it's time to get out the caffeine, or at least a comfortable chair. But Maud's is different - mostly because she makes her life into a story - a story as interesting and as fun as her beloved Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon. The words and stories of her life make the book one that is impossible to put down...who knows what might happen to Maud on the next page. Also, because she wrote it, the reader know what she is thinking, what she was like as a child because there is no one retelling it but herself.

By HMS Warspite In 1917, wildly popular for a string of novels and short stories, Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was asked to provide an autobiographical sketch for a Canadian women's magazine. The resulting narrative was eventually published as a short book, and is available here.In "The Alpine Path", Montgomery traced her childhood on Prince Edward Island, including her challenging apprenticeship as a female writer, her short stints as a school teacher and editor at a newspaper, and finally, success with her best-selling first novel, "Anner of Green Gables."This autobiographical sketch has been characterized as how Montgomery thought her life should have been. Her biographers have noted the obvious parrallels with her "Anne" and "Story Girl" novels, and the blurring of the real facts of her unhappy childhood and unfortunate marriage as revealed by her journals and letters. "The Alpine Path" is perhaps best seen as her attempt to use her considerable writing skills to control her own narrative, but it makes for interesting reading nonetheless. "The Alpine Path" is cautiously recommended to her fans and future biographers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A compassionate guide to schizophrenia! By Psychresident Dr. Gill’s wonderful book takes a compassionate approach to helping families and patients understand the history, causes, and treatment of schizophrenia. It traces the history of schizophrenia all the way back to antiquity, discusses gender differences in the presentation of schizophrenia, provides recommendations about dealing with the legal system, and discusses various modalities that are available to treat schizophrenia. Schizophrenia can cause many hardships to individuals and their families, and therefore, the importance of having a handy guide in dealing with it can’t be over-emphasized. Dr. Gill has taken into account the professional and personal experiences of his colleagues in dealing with schizophrenia, and they inform his writing. Overall, it a well-written book that will serve the needs of many.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Easy to understand By Michael R. Neer This is an excellent book that makes schizophrenia very easy to understand, especially for parents, family members, and the person with the illness. The author has written it through a series of questions and answers, which makes it very readable. I am not a psychiatrist, but I found the information easy to understand, relevant to family concerns, and extremely helpful. Dr. Gill also gives some fascinating history of the disorder which I didn't know, and presents the compassionate point of view that schizophrenia is treatable just like any other illness. He points out that many individuals with this illness turn out to have great lives with good contributions to our society. My only quibble, and it's a small one, is that I would have added an index and formatted the contents for easier use. All in all, if you know anyone with symptoms as described in this book, then you will also find ways to help them in it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Many thanks Dr. Gill. By Aszad Prettipaul An excellent book that makes for easy reading and for those who have little or no knowledge of Schizophrenia, this book will prove to be very helpful. The education and awareness I have derived from this book provided a better understanding of the history and nature of schizophrenia. It speaks to patients, families and provider in a language that is easy to understand and apply. It recognizes the challenges that patients and families experience in the processes of treating and living with schizophrenia. This book is a great tool and resource for families/individuals to use for quick reference, to provide clarity and reduce confusion. As members of my own family currently suffer from schizophrenia, I find hope from the exposure to this presentation of schizophrenia and awareness of current treatment possibilities.

Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, by David Livingstone

About the Author David Livingstone (19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873) was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His meeting with H. M. Stanley gave rise to the popular quotation, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. When Missionary Travels was first published in 1857, reviewers noted that the existing ideas about south central Africa would have to undergo a radical transformation. Land thought to be dry and mountainous was discovered to be fertile grassland with a wide variety of animal life, and the peoples that lived there, while sometimes suspicious, were often welcoming to an outsider. And great rivers existed as well; the Zambesi River was unknown to Europeans until Livingstone's visit.

Dr. David Livingstone had lived in Africa for a number of years when he undertook the journey he writes about in this book. It is a remarkable story, told without self-aggrandizement. Livingstone walked over 4,000 miles, from Cape Town, South Africa through the Kalahari Desert to the coastal town of Loanda (now Luanda, Angola), and back along the Zambesi River to the east coast of Mozambique. Only members of the Makololo tribe, with whom he had established a firm friendship, accompanied him. His mission was to stop the slave trade.

Livingstone begins the book with a brief overview of his personal life that reveals a fierce determination: he learned Latin, Greek, medicine and theology while still employed as a cotton-spinner in a Scottish mill. He had hoped to go to China as a missionary but went to Africa instead, and he describes some of his early experiences there. On one occasion he encountered a lion in the village of Mabotsa:

"I saw one of the beasts sitting on a piece of rock as before, but this time he had a little bush in front. Being about thirty yards off, I took a good aim at his body through the bush, and fired both barrels into it. The men then called out, "He is shot, he is shot!" Others cried, "He has been shot by another man too; let us go to him!" I did not see any one else shoot at him, but I saw the lion's tail erected in anger behind the bush, and, turning to the people, said, "Stop a little, till I load again." When in the act of ramming down the bullets, I heard a shout.

"Starting, and looking half round, I saw the lion just in the act of springing upon me. I was upon a little height; he caught my shoulder as he sprang, and we both came to the ground below together. Growling horribly close to my ear, he shook me as a terrier dog does a rat. The shock produced a stupor similar to that which seems to be felt by a mouse after the first shake of the cat. It caused a sort of dreaminess, in which there was no sense of pain nor feeling of terror, though quite conscious of all that was happening. It was like what patients partially under the influence of chloroform describe, who see all the operation, but feel not the knife. This singular condition was not the result of any mental process. The shake annihilated fear, and allowed no sense of horror in looking round at the beast. This peculiar state is probably produced in all animals killed by the carnivora; and if so, is a merciful provision by our benevolent Creator for lessening the pain of death."

Livingstone pushed through the Kalahari Desert and the savannas and travelled along the Zambesi river. Eventually he came to the falls known by the natives as "Mosi oa tunya" ("smoke does sound there") and which he named "Victoria":

"After twenty minutes' sail from Kalai we came in sight, for the first time, of the columns of vapor appropriately called 'smoke', rising at a distance of five or six miles, exactly as when large tracts of grass are burned in Africa. Five columns now arose, and, bending in the direction of the wind, they seemed placed against a low ridge covered with trees; the tops of the columns at this distance appeared to mingle with the clouds. They were white below, and higher up became dark, so as to simulate smoke very closely. The whole scene was extremely beautiful; the banks and islands dotted over the river are adorned with sylvan vegetation of great variety of color and form. At the period of our visit several trees were spangled over with blossoms...It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight."

He encountered a variety of peoples including both the nomadic Bushmen and the Bakalahari with their enormous herds, and he includes numerous descriptions of terrain and animal life. Sensitive descriptions of indigenous religious practices and customs also abound, and Livingstone assesses people and situations without romanticizing them. This is an important book, and reading it helps us to understand not only the Africa of the past but of the present.

Bright Light in the Dark Continent By Serpentofthenile In his book on Nile exploration, Moorehead speaks of Livingstone as possessing "baraka"--the quality of making everything seem better just by his presence. Livingstone's humanity and generosity of spirit illuminate this book. The details of his journey through Southern Africa are interesting and vivid, though not crammed with incident. Modern readers will be interested in Livingstone's observations on race relations in the different colonial settlements of the region. But the highlight of the book for me was the personality of Livingstone himself, his sympathy and insight, his matter-of-fact documentation of danger and hardship, his global perspective. A particularly rewarding read if Speke and Burton have left you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Additionally, when you receive the book and find out it is 1 of 2, you can't buy Volume 2. Apparently what is needed is the following ISBN, which is supposed to contain both volumes: 1-58976-287-8. Very poor identification on the Amazon website.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Incredible Man By Edivorp Rouylael David Livingston was an incredible man. He explored areas of Africa that had been previoulsy ignored by most of Europe. His notes on the regions he explored and the people he encountered are meticulous and fascinating. Prior to his visit to the region of Nyasaland, every year between 5,000-20,000 slaves were being sold to slave traders in the region. Livingston attacked the slave trade head on and was largely responsible for its downfall in that area. While some of his personal notes would be considered ignorant or offensive by modern standards, he was progressive and open minded for his time. He is a great historical figure who is too often ignored.
