By jen122382 Learning to Love Kimchi is the story of a young woman, the author, embarking on a two-year adventure in Korea as a member of the Peace Corps. It offers a look into the world of Peace Corps service in a way that puts the reader in the field right next to the young woman who experiences the roller coaster of emotions attached with being in a new place so far from home for so long. Excitement, anticipation, frustration, and homesickness are just a few of the things that readers have to look forward to as they take this journey.Perhaps the most interesting and captivating part of this narrative is that it doesn't look like your average story. Instead, the narrative is constructed through letters that Carol wrote home to her mother from the field. The reader goes from one letter to the next, which creates a different yet cohesive story that really shows the reader the ups and downs of what it must have been like to be a young woman in a different world far from home. It is this structure that really makes this type of story shine. Everything is feels real because it was real in that moment as that letter was written. It never once feels disjointed or difficult to follow; it all just makes sense and pulls the reader into that world. By the end of the book, the reader feels like he/she was right there with the young woman the entire time; the fantastic images from the author's time spent in Korea also adds a deeper level of substance and imagery to the experience.I have always wanted to travel and know what it would be like to live in a completely different country. Although I've never had the chance to do so on my own, Learning to Love Kimchi: Letters Home from a Peace Corps Volunteer leaves me feeling like, in a way, I was there the entire time, serving in this foreign land during a time in which America was undergoing a great deal of change. It's a great read that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to either serve in the Peace Corps or just wanting to know what it would be like to have such an experience. You will not be left disappointed.

As a 2nd generation Korean-American, I was fascinated to read about the Korea that my parents once lived in...from an American perspective. Korea sure was different back in the 70's! As someone working overseas in a developing country, I could also relate to many of the experiences that the author described...the ups and downs, the joys and frustrations. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends and family!

The format flows in letters to Mom back home and in the process we learn about the Country: customs; food, living conditions, educational system and the people the Author lived with and met during her two year Peace Corp journey. In addition she visited many other Countries and Islands - to this reader that made it even more interesting. A must read - Five Stars from me !!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this book comes in very handy and I will recommend it to my co-workers and colleagues By Joel The name of this book has been updated to "Become Certified in ABA" rather than the previous title, which is more appropriate. Someone mentioned typos such as "interverbal" which needs to be fixed as well. However, these examples and definitions of each task list were once notes of someone who is now board certified. This guides me through BDS modules, especially since the Cooper book can be difficult to read. It is not to be use alone, but along BDS modules as described in the beginning of the book. For me, this book comes in very handy and I will recommend it to my co-workers and colleagues. Perhaps we will get reviews from others who have passed or failed the exam. As for now, I am happy with my purchase.

About the Author

Fred Arnow considers himself a typical baby boomer. The first-born son in a traditional family of three, Arnow went to college, then served as an officer in the US Navy. After his military service, he joined the corporate business world until retirement.

Married for more than forty years to a professional woman who worked in public education, Arnow lives in an age-qualified community in Nevada. He and his wife have two grown children, a grandchild, and another grandchild on the way.

Arnow’s family has lived in eight different states with four different dogs. He and his wife enjoy traveling the United States in their RV.

Baby Boomer Reflections: A book for all ages By Fred James Once upon a time in a place called "America" those who had TV sets got three channels, but never complained there was nothing to watch; kids left home after breakfast on their bikes to fish, play baseball or explore the wonders in the woods that surrounded their home towns; going to the drive-in on a Saturday night was a family affair that included a picnic lunch; political party affiliation really didn't matter because our leaders could be trusted; Sundays were a day for family gatherings, including trips to parks that featured rides and musical entertainment; a guy named Buddy made every boy long for a girl like Peggy Sue; doing a slow dance to "Venus" was heady stuff; a buck was enough for a Saturday afternoon movie, snacks and a Coke for two; what was the last truly innocent generation was trying to figure out how to get "Satisfaction" when "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was all it asked; riding the handle bars to the corner lot for a pickup baseball game was SOP; kids knew not to play "cowboy and Indian" with dad's hunting rifle; religion, patriotism, the family unit and sports were all "cool." For those who grew up in those times, reading "Baby Boomer Reflections: Eighteen Special Years Between 1946 and 1964" will bring back lots of memories and plenty of smiles and tears. For those who want to find out just why their grandparents or great uncles and aunts are who they are the book will present a slice of history that will not be found in another source.

The book has so many interesting bits of information on events, music, people from those eighteen years that I want to read the book again just to savor the content---much of which I had forgotten and lots I never knew. By William Everett Mr. Arnow did a wonderful job in bringing out old memories that have been long forgotten. I loved how the music was woven with the events. Very cleverly written and one cannot read without having a smile on your face. I was constantly stopping and interacting with my wife about the book. A terrific read for the Baby Boomers. I think I am going to get a copy for our granddaughter to reinforce our growing up which we constantly compare with hers.

I felt misled by the other reviews. It looks like someone is just profiting off of Lebron James' fame. This is not a great book for an intermediate reader.

He is one of the most respected too for his qualities such as dedication , consistencies and hard work apart from the skills he has. His childhood was in poverty and then a move that changed his life. He is a great motivation for all the youngsters out there who want to make a career in sports or even in any field if you consider the qualities of this 2.03 m tall man. Author has made a good effort to portray the life and the qualities. Good One for the young readers!

By Judy Perdomo Jo Dibblee has been a friend of mine for almost ten years and so you might think that I am writing this review simply because she's my friend. Well let me tell you!! I had NO idea of the burdens Jo was carrying! Parts of her life story had been revealed to me in snippets over the years but I too had no idea of what she truly endured for so long. Running. Always running. Gaining success and then hiding. Moving to the next place, changing her name, starting anew. "Frock Off: Living Undisguised" is a triumph! For Jo! For women (and men) all over the world! The inspiration in this book makes it a must read! Share it with your book club. Gift it to women who can't afford to buy it but need it more than most of us will ever know. Tell your trusted counsellors and life coaches to incorporate it into their programs - the dramatic life experiences of this amazing woman who grew up in out of the way small towns amid huge dysfunction shows us that it doesn't matter where you come from. Though the weight of the story is most definitely felt, Jo tells the tale with ease (ease that no doubt comes from much wrestling with the story and the issues herself).Jo's history is rough, but she never leaves the reader any room to feel sorry for her. As in life, Jo's writing in this book keeps moving on, begging the reader to turn the next page, to keep going because there's MORE to come... and it's worth it! Identifying her own frocks and disguises throughout, Jo peels back the layers of masks and abuse, laying bare her heart and her journey.But ... There's no pity party here!There are, however, plenty of examples of what can happen when frocks take over your true identity, and even more encouragement to live authentically.Knowing Jo personally makes the story even more powerful - I've seen some of her defrocking efforts, and I see what living Frock-Free looks like in her life. She's the real deal!"Frock Off: Living Undisguised" has challenged, encouraged, and inspired me. By Susan Ferreira Jo Dibblee's autobiography is a gripping and tragic story of ascendance from a tragic childhood of neglect and abuse, to being protected in the Canadian Witness Protection Program as a murder witness and living in hiding for 35 years. Throughout her years of hiding with numerous names, Jo becomes a successful business woman, confidant and advisor, helping women reveal themselves to be who they truly wish to be, conflicted by knowing she was living a hidden life and "wearing many frocks" of disguise.Freedom - or Frocking Off - came to Jo just a few years ago and for the first time, she has been able to tell her story and live the life she had always longed for and was always meant to live.A great read which comes with the realization you do not have to let your past define your future.

The dramatic journey takes place in 2009, inside the small town that was rocked with tragedy, when 17-year-old high school senior named Richard Bates murders three classmates, while filming the incidents. Unlike the film, the original screenplay is excluded from interviews with the killer's friends, family, and professionals. And instead, takes you on an intense ride with just the killer, Richard Bates and his camcorder, as he lets the readers in on his own dark and twisted thoughts which lead to his psychotic actions. It all builds up to a very intense ending where Richard will either go down in history as one of the best serial killers, or be remembered as another disturbed teen who tried to make a statement to the world.

From the Author Garry Reed, writing as the Libertarian News Examiner, chronicled the activism of Julian Heicklen and the Tyranny Fighters from October 28, 2009 when Julian first set foot in New York with his Jury Info sign to a final interview with him on June 28, 2012 with over 70 news and opinion articles.

From the Inside Flap This is not a biography of Julian Heicklen or anyone else.   It's not a history. It's not a life story. It's not a memoire or a profile.   This is a chronicle of a courageous, determined libertarian rights activist and the people who were most inspired to join him as fellow Tyranny Fighters as reported in my online news and opinion feature The Libertarian News Examiner and based on first hand, news media, live witness, and on professional and citizen journalist accounts.   The story is told chronologically, as it happened, from the time of Julian's first appearance in front of the Manhattan federal courthouse in October 2009 at age 77 until his final act of rebellion in June 2012 at age 80.   With the exception of expunging references to hyperlinks and correcting typos, grammar, punctuation and other minor irregularities all articles have been reprinted exactly as they originally appeared.

By Astra F. d'Oudney The Julian Heicklen Chronicles describe this one man’s amazing courageous persistence in peacefully trying to liberate U.S. citizens from a dangerously increasing tyranny through the courts. This book is all about the age-old truth that the jurors in every case have the duty to judge the fairness of the law, and annul the prosecution if conviction or punishment would be unfair to the defendant, by finding the defendant Not Guilty. The book also points out that the U.S. has only 4.7% of the world’s population but now has 25% of the world’s incarcerated; more percentage-wise than under Stalin's Soviet Russia and the apartheid regime in South Africa. I recommend everyone reads this book, Tyranny Fighters, the Julian Heicklen Chronicles, ably collated and commented on by Gary Reed; and then, in their own way, get busy doing their part as Julian Heicklen has done for many years, in making sure the whole population comes to understand the real value to them of Annulment by Jury in the Constitutional Trial by Jury. Julian Heicklen is an example to us all; an outstanding genuine latter-day hero.

Taylor Garry Reed’s book, Tyranny Fighters, provides a riveting chronological account of libertarian freedom fighter, Dr. Julian P. Heicklen’s year’s long freedom of speech battle with the American police state Authority to inform prospective jurors of their legal rights. In the process of merely exercising his First Amendment rights Dr. Heicklen was wrongly arrested numerous times, dragged and confined to mental hospitals against his will, jailed, bullied, tortured, and charged with bogus criminal offenses.This gentle and humble man violated no laws. He committed no crimes. He is innocent. He’s the victim of a vicious persecution by evil government agents of American Authority! As I predicted in my blog, a federal judge in New York City finally ordered the dismissal of a criminal “jury tampering” indictment against the frail octogenarian professor based on merely passing out leaflets in a public place advocating jury nullification.For centuries in British and American Jurisprudence, if a jury concludes that something about a case against the accused stinks, it has the power to disregard the evidence and/or refuse to apply the law as instructed by the judge. Jurors may not be compelled to account for their verdicts. A Story That Needed To Be Told By John Burton In full disclosure, I have a horse in this race because I am mentioned in the book and was a Tyranny Fighter too. That said, this book chronicles the worthy and important struggle that was led by Julian Heicklen, between 2009 & 2012, and which, by way of bringing the man himself to the attention of those who have never heard of him, and celebrating his selfless contributions, might also serve to awaken the reader to some of the egregious abuses of our legal system (or to reinforce his suspicions)! It might even make the reader mad. Yes, this story needed to be told— and though Julian’s campaign, with all its implications, cries out for fuller treatment, Garry’s account is intended only as a chronicle of events, rather than a biography or manifesto, and in that regard it succeeds. The forward progress takes place via a compilation of articles, or accounts, originally appearing in the author’s own Libertarian News Examiner, at the time the event unfolded, represented chronologically here, but introduced with contemporary comments. For that reason much of the information is necessarily repeated, though there is still plenty of new information to keep ones passions hot. One suggestion I have is that in future editions I would like to see more contrast between the introductory remarks and the reproduced articles. Perhaps merely boldening the type-face of the introductory remarks would do it.

While I have many books on my shelf that focus on specific protocols for mental health conditions, to my knowledge there has yet to be a reference book that covers the broad spectrum of complementary and alternative approaches appearing in the clinical literature. Being able to access this information in such a complete and well-organized format will be invaluable tool for researchers, clinicians and interested lay readers. I believe that Dion’s book CODEX ALTERNUS is a great leap forward in our quickly developing field. As an integrative practitioner, one of the questions I am often asked by clients and other clinicians about my nutritional and Functional Medicine approaches I use in my practice is: “is there legitimate research to support what you are suggesting”. Now I can resoundingly say there is research and easily make copies of the abstracts. Thank you Dion for creating volume that supports and encourages my work and the work of many other brave clinicians! This is a book that anyone interested in alternative and complementary medicine for mental health needs to add to their library.

Codex Alternus is an excellent reference manual to make it clear how there is not only another way to address and help heal the issue of psychosis and bipolar disorders but there are many ways this can be addressed without the need to give toxic and addictive drugs. My experience has shown that all too often the direct and indirect effects of what is commonly used in psychiatric medication prescriptions cause more problems than what the patient presented at the start. This is why I developed alternative programs over the years that align with many things in this codex and have found many ways to return the sanely,peace and happiness to a person without any needs for a lifetime of medication usage.

Review I consider Dion Zessin to be a member of what I call the pantheon of citizen researchers. He shares this distinction others I have so-labeled such as a city planner named George Eby, a mother named Karen Serousi, and a geologist named Harold Foster, all of whom made significant contributions towards the assessment and treatment  in spite of, or, perhaps because they were not constrained by existing dogma. Dion may not have the letters after his name, but like many of us, he has, as they say, “skin in the game.”  And he has meticulously summarized a huge body of the research literature, providing a compendium of interventions for what he and the mainstream still call mental disorders. (In my most recent books I call them biobehavioral syndromes.) His book is a first of its kind. It provides a useful reference to professionals and patients alike. From my perspective, the studies he has found show us just how culture-bound our diagnoses and treatments are.The abstracts generally show the results of interventions, but rarely the reasons for them.  Still, I was rewarded to find two studies supporting the use of agonists for a receptor called the alpha 7 nicotinic cholinergic receptor in psychosis. This may seem esoteric—even far fetched to some, but these studies support a hypothesis in one of my books that links infections to dysfunctional GABA receptors and psychosis.  Other findings support the role of  free radicals in psychopathology, suggesting, to my way of thinking, the need for targeted treatments for oxidative stress.When health providers can match the relevant biological markers with symptoms that transcend the labels, we will see a positive transformation in outcomes.   Only  with proper assessment can curative effective treatments be found. Here is an evidence-based book that covers the full landscape of non-drug options for mental health.I work in the field of mental health and one of the most difficult questions to answer for people is, “what are my options beyond psychiatric drugs?” This book answers that question in spades with an astounding array of options with direct references back to the original studies that support the options efficacy and safety. From my initial deep dive into the book, it appears to be an indispensable encyclopedic practitioner reference for those in the emerging field of Integrative Mental Health.A quick scan of the table of contents gives a sense of the book’s breadth. It offers a variety of Western techniques including vitamins, amino acids, peptides, hormones, micronutrients, detoxification methods, electronic stimulation techniques, food allergies, mindfulness, meditation, mind-body therapies, psychosocial approaches and many more. In addition, it includes a very large number of options, primarily herbal in nature, from non-Western medical systems including Ayurvedic (India), traditional Chinese medicine, Kampo medicine (Japan) and even African traditional medicine.The references range from major meta-analyses to smaller suggestive studies and even some individual case studies. Of special help is a condensed quote of 2-4 sentences pulled directly from the results and conclusions of each study to give you a sense of the size, nature and key findings. If it sounds interesting, the full reference including PubMed # is included.The book also covers a wide time-frame including studies back into the mid 20th century. Although I’ll take some of those with a grain of salt, some of these older studies are quite well done with fairly large sample sizes. In addition, research is extracted from a number of international journals and publications.The only potential downside I see in the book is that it doesn’t prioritize the options for you. But given the reality of bio-individuality, such prioritization would be fuzzy at best at the individual level. Your success with these options is going to come down a process of individual experimentation with your client.If you are willing to consider a broad set of integration mental health options, I don’t think a better reference exists.

It serves as an exhaustive resource for information about pharmaceutical and alternative treatment options. I am glad to be able to consult this book with my clients as we evaluate treatment strategies. It has helped to raise my client's confidence levels as they advocate for their desired treatment plans with their physicians. I have recommended this book to many of my peers, and it has become a frequently utilized resource in our office.

By Amazon Customer Concerning the treatment of my schizoaffective diagnosis, the book Codex Alternus was an invaluable source of information to me. Though the book has hundreds of therapies, I felt that in numerous studies there was a common theme that the use of vitamin E, vitamin B6, and vitamin C were used...which I started on with good results.
