When Kevin was fourteen years old, he was just starting to understand his orientation as a gay teen living in a suburb of St. Louis. Then he met someone who he thought was his friend. This man was no friend. Instead, he coerced Kevin into child prostitution.
During this difficult time, Kevin befriended two boys also trapped in the thinly concealed underworld of sex trafficking. What he found surprised him--these friends gave him a gift that nearly forty years later has continued to shape his life.
Co-written by Rev. R.K. Kline and author Daniel D. Maurer, this book is not only Kevin's memoir, but also a tribute to friendships that can shape a person's faith and worldview in the worst of situations. Dr. Ric Curtis and Dr. Anthony Marcus from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City offer an analysis on how underage prostitution has changed over the years and what remains the same.

Faraway: A Suburban Boy's Story as a Victim of Sex Trafficking, by R. K. Kline, Daniel D. Maurer Review "Faraway is a page-turner, and one cannot help but to want to save Kline as he finds himself forced to sell his body to men on the street . . . In addition to presenting a compelling story, Faraway is also packed with factual information about the human trafficking industry." - The Bay Area Reporter, February, 2016.''It is easy to imagine that the past was simpler and more wholesome; that there was a time, not so long ago, when children rode bikes and ate apples. Occasionally we are lucky enough to have something shake us from this fairy tale idea and challenge us to ask serious questions about both the past and the present. Kevin Kline's memoir of trading sex for money at the age of fourteen almost forty years ago is one of those challenges.'' --Dr. Ric Curtis and Dr. Anthony Marcus, John Jay College of Criminal Justice New York City, New York''This book, with its authentic, searing story of hope in the midst of the tragedy of sexual trafficking of boys, is a must-read for everyone unaware of the crimes being perpetuated against our children and for everyone committed to building a just society in which persons of all orientations are honored as in the image of the God who created them.'' --Dr. Gwen Sayler, Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa''This exposé about the pimping of teenaged boys is a must-read. Kevin Kline provides a first person story of his fourteenth year when he was trafficked in Middle America. He is clear about the need for churches to publicly welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities so that they know they are God's beloved with a place of safety within faith communities.'' --Rev. Anita C. Hill, ELCA Pastor, Reconciling Works, Saint Paul, Minnesota
From the Author Faraway: A Suburban Boy's Story as a Victim of Sex Trafficking is writer Daniel D. Maurer's second book. It is his first he has written in cooperation with another writer. Daniel writes under the brand "Dan the Story Man" and focuses specifically on stories of transformation--a topic for which Faraway certainly qualifies. Both Daniel and R.K. encourage you to read this story that was written with care, paying attention to the truth of Kevin's account, so that other boys need not suffer as he did. Both authors believe that readers will themselves experience a radical transformation not only their understanding of who a victim is, but also a transformation in knowing that the Infinite dwells in the most common, everyday places.

29 of 30 people found the following review helpful. This book opened my eyes. By Naomi Krueger I couldn't put it down. It was really intense. Powerful. Sad. Difficult to read. Still processing. That was my immediate reaction to this incredible true story. Kline and Maurer's words about a boy's tragic experience as a victim of sex trafficking had me riveted. I've been aware of sex trafficking and sexual victimization of women and girls, but I wasn't aware of how it affected boys. This book opened my eyes. This book holds nothing back. The characters are real people, and they feel real. The words are raw. The experiences at times graphic and disturbing. And of course this personal story points to a larger problem in our world. Stories have the power to provoke us to action, and I hope that all those who read this book will be moved to seek greater accountability for those who victimize the vulnerable among us. I also hope it will move us to pay attention to the boys and girls in our communities who may be vulnerable to this kind of exploitation, and take steps to prevent this kind of story from repeating. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to gain greater empathy for victims of sex trafficking.
26 of 27 people found the following review helpful. I'm glad I read it By Pauline Ness This story gave me a different view of what I thought of as "human trafficking". I'm glad I read it. I always thought of this crime as victims being kidnapped and returned only if they were extremely lucky to escape. This story gives a different perspective and it was eye opening for me. It makes me sad to realize what some have gone through simply because they were not able to follow the path expected of all of us. Great reading, hard to put down once I started to read it.
15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. at times sad, but always a page-turner By Julius L McCarter R.K. Kline's Faraway: A Suburban Boy's Story as a Victim of Sex Trafficking is one memoir you shouldn't miss in 2015. It recounts Kevin's life in the mid-1970s American suburbia as a sex trafficked teenage gay youth.Faraway is at times intense, at times sad, but always a page-turner. This is the story of how a young man is groomed for sex trafficking in the American heartland -- not the typical narrative of sex trafficking that the Church often hears. But Faraway is more than a story of grief and suffering. It's also a celebration of friendship and salvation -- of Stevie and Squirrel -- who are agents of reconciliation, demonstrating yet again that God is always at work in the world, in those moments and places where darkness seem to have the most say.So that's why I found Faraway so gripping that I couldn't put it down. We're so accustomed to hearing of sex trafficking of young women. This is a book that corrects that bias, and highlights a layer to the Church's conversations and ministries with LGBT folks that often go unspoken.Make no doubt about it, Kline holds nothing back in this memoir. It's filled with scenes that will make certain segments of the Church squirm. And rightly so. Because those scenes are graphic and disturbing. While Kline was used in a ways that changed his life forever, his retelling of that summer in the mid 70s is a story that provokes Christians to action and prayer. This story holds us in the Body of Christ accountable for the ways we are with and for the vulnerable and exploited. So ultimately, while Faraway is a page-turner, it's also not a book for the faint of heart. Those whose heart has been restored by Jesus Christ will shed tears of grief, too.Faraway is a real gift for the Church, not just for the story it tells, but for the spiritual vision of vocation that it renews.__________________I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, as part of the Speakeasy book review program, in exchange for my honest review here.
