A DEVOTED MOTHER GOES MISSINGEvery once in a great while a genuine murder mystery unfolds before the public's eyes…Such is the tragic case of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden. When the pretty Utah mother went missing in December of 2009, the media was swept up in the story―with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to Susan―and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm. It was hard to know what, or who, to believe.

AND A CYCLE OF DEVASTATION BEGINS…Over the next three years, bombshell by bombshell, a world of secrets about the Powell family came to light. Josh's father, Steve, who was sexually obsessed with Susan, would ultimately be convicted of unspeakable perversion. Josh's brother, Michael, would commit suicide. And in the most stunning event of them all, Josh Powell would murder his two little boys before killing himself. Why did he do it? What really happened to Susan? This is the shocking true story of the Powell family that no reader will soon forget.

I was impressed with how accurate and well written the information is Gregg and Rebecca did an excellent job telling my family's story. This is the best book I have read so far about my sister. I encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. Although this is a sad story, it is a well written account of my family's struggle.

But the best true crime give us the background and psychological elements to help us understand how a seemingly "All-American" family gets caught up in the sort of horror that even a work of fiction would find difficult to emulate. Olsen is one of the top true crime writers in the country. An author who reveals much about the human condition through his careful study and depiction of what motivates and explains the unfathomable.--Steve Jackson, author of MONSTER and NOT LOST FOREVER

39 of 42 people found the following review helpful. A StunningTrue Crime Expose of the Susan Powell Case... By missmickee/bookreview "If I Can't Have You: Susan Powell, Her Mysterious Disappearance, and the Murder of Her Children" is the shocking well researched story of the Susan Powell case by true-crime authors Gregg Olsen with Rebecca Morris. The title alone is particularly chilling, providing a look into the mind set of a deceased demented killer: Josh Powell; husband of missing Susan Powell, father of her precious murdered sons, Charlie and Braden. After returning from an impulsive camping trip in a Utah mountain snowstorm, with his young sons, on December 6th 2009, the West Valley Police were waiting to question Josh Powell in the driveway of his home. Josh claimed he last saw his wife Susan in their home before he left, he did not appear distraught over this incident, nor did he ever join police, scores friends, family and church members, and multitudes of concerned strangers who searched for this beautiful, devoted Mormon wife and mother, praying for her safe return. Police described their 2 hour interrogation with Josh Powell as not very productive, and labeled it a "Missing Person's Case" to the national media who had rushed to Utah to cover the shocking news.Susan Maria Cox was born the third of four daughters to Chuck and Judy Cox on October 16, 1981. A family of deep Mormon faith, and a happy stable family background, the Cox family had serious concerns/reservations when Susan married Josh Powell on April 6, 2001 in a Portland Oregon "Holy Temple Ceremony". The faithful believe that marriage is "sealed" on earth and also the heavenly afterlife. The husband is the leader of the home, and the wife, submissive to his direction, with obligation to maintain a peaceful, happy marriage and home life.Later, Susan would confess she couldn't believe/imagine that she could spend eternity with a husband who had emerged as an obvious controlling liar, selfish, impulsive, dramatically arrogant/self important, frequent bursts of anger and rants, and inability to hold a job. The members of their Hunter 36th Ward merely tolerated him for Susan's sake. Few people knew of his true personality and irrational behaviors.Josh changed noticeably after his sons were born (2004-2005), he used sex as a weapon, withholding all affection, acting repulsed by her, in efforts to punish his wife. Susan suspected he had a porn habit, but found he had installed extensive firewalls on his computers to prevent snooping. It was highly disturbing that the Powell's moved to Utah in 2003 to get away from the obsessional sexual lust Josh's father Steven Powell had for Susan. Steve took hundreds of pictures of Susan without her knowledge, wrote over 2,330 pages in 17 notebooks, and recorded over 50 songs, one titled: "I said I Loved You", posting them on his website. Susan was appalled and mortified by Steve's actions, he also mailed her suggestive photographs. Susan tried to keep these matters confidential. Those who knew of Steve's behavior towards her, urged her to notify the police. At he time of Susan's disappearance the Powell's were in marriage counseling through their LDS ward, Susan dismayed that Josh wasn't cooperating or doing his part in the written assignments. A chilling heartbreaking note was found stapled together in a locked drawer in her desk at Wells Fargo: "If I die, it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one. Take care of my boys".Absolutely no one could have predicted the unspeakable horror or the brutal and purely evil outcome of this tragic case. In writing this book, Olsen/Morris had the co-operation of the Cox family, other family members friends acquaintances, and authorities representing Police Departments involved in this investigation/case. There was also access given to telling emails and the tormented writings of Susan Powell, many reprinted in the book. Olsen, a prolific true-crime writer, lives in rural Kitsap County in Washington State. Morris, a bestselling author/journalist lives in Seattle Washington.
