A DEVOTED MOTHER GOES MISSINGEvery once in a great while a genuine murder mystery unfolds before the public's eyes…Such is the tragic case of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden. When the pretty Utah mother went missing in December of 2009, the media was swept up in the story―with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to Susan―and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm. It was hard to know what, or who, to believe.

AND A CYCLE OF DEVASTATION BEGINS…Over the next three years, bombshell by bombshell, a world of secrets about the Powell family came to light. Josh's father, Steve, who was sexually obsessed with Susan, would ultimately be convicted of unspeakable perversion. Josh's brother, Michael, would commit suicide. And in the most stunning event of them all, Josh Powell would murder his two little boys before killing himself. Why did he do it? What really happened to Susan? This is the shocking true story of the Powell family that no reader will soon forget.

I was impressed with how accurate and well written the information is Gregg and Rebecca did an excellent job telling my family's story. This is the best book I have read so far about my sister. I encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. Although this is a sad story, it is a well written account of my family's struggle.

But the best true crime give us the background and psychological elements to help us understand how a seemingly "All-American" family gets caught up in the sort of horror that even a work of fiction would find difficult to emulate. Olsen is one of the top true crime writers in the country. An author who reveals much about the human condition through his careful study and depiction of what motivates and explains the unfathomable.--Steve Jackson, author of MONSTER and NOT LOST FOREVER

39 of 42 people found the following review helpful. A StunningTrue Crime Expose of the Susan Powell Case... By missmickee/bookreview "If I Can't Have You: Susan Powell, Her Mysterious Disappearance, and the Murder of Her Children" is the shocking well researched story of the Susan Powell case by true-crime authors Gregg Olsen with Rebecca Morris. The title alone is particularly chilling, providing a look into the mind set of a deceased demented killer: Josh Powell; husband of missing Susan Powell, father of her precious murdered sons, Charlie and Braden. After returning from an impulsive camping trip in a Utah mountain snowstorm, with his young sons, on December 6th 2009, the West Valley Police were waiting to question Josh Powell in the driveway of his home. Josh claimed he last saw his wife Susan in their home before he left, he did not appear distraught over this incident, nor did he ever join police, scores friends, family and church members, and multitudes of concerned strangers who searched for this beautiful, devoted Mormon wife and mother, praying for her safe return. Police described their 2 hour interrogation with Josh Powell as not very productive, and labeled it a "Missing Person's Case" to the national media who had rushed to Utah to cover the shocking news.Susan Maria Cox was born the third of four daughters to Chuck and Judy Cox on October 16, 1981. A family of deep Mormon faith, and a happy stable family background, the Cox family had serious concerns/reservations when Susan married Josh Powell on April 6, 2001 in a Portland Oregon "Holy Temple Ceremony". The faithful believe that marriage is "sealed" on earth and also the heavenly afterlife. The husband is the leader of the home, and the wife, submissive to his direction, with obligation to maintain a peaceful, happy marriage and home life.Later, Susan would confess she couldn't believe/imagine that she could spend eternity with a husband who had emerged as an obvious controlling liar, selfish, impulsive, dramatically arrogant/self important, frequent bursts of anger and rants, and inability to hold a job. The members of their Hunter 36th Ward merely tolerated him for Susan's sake. Few people knew of his true personality and irrational behaviors.Josh changed noticeably after his sons were born (2004-2005), he used sex as a weapon, withholding all affection, acting repulsed by her, in efforts to punish his wife. Susan suspected he had a porn habit, but found he had installed extensive firewalls on his computers to prevent snooping. It was highly disturbing that the Powell's moved to Utah in 2003 to get away from the obsessional sexual lust Josh's father Steven Powell had for Susan. Steve took hundreds of pictures of Susan without her knowledge, wrote over 2,330 pages in 17 notebooks, and recorded over 50 songs, one titled: "I said I Loved You", posting them on his website. Susan was appalled and mortified by Steve's actions, he also mailed her suggestive photographs. Susan tried to keep these matters confidential. Those who knew of Steve's behavior towards her, urged her to notify the police. At he time of Susan's disappearance the Powell's were in marriage counseling through their LDS ward, Susan dismayed that Josh wasn't cooperating or doing his part in the written assignments. A chilling heartbreaking note was found stapled together in a locked drawer in her desk at Wells Fargo: "If I die, it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one. Take care of my boys".Absolutely no one could have predicted the unspeakable horror or the brutal and purely evil outcome of this tragic case. In writing this book, Olsen/Morris had the co-operation of the Cox family, other family members friends acquaintances, and authorities representing Police Departments involved in this investigation/case. There was also access given to telling emails and the tormented writings of Susan Powell, many reprinted in the book. Olsen, a prolific true-crime writer, lives in rural Kitsap County in Washington State. Morris, a bestselling author/journalist lives in Seattle Washington.

BLOW is the unlikely story of George Jung's roller coaster ride from middle-class high school football hero to the heart of Pable Escobar's Medellin cartel-- the largest importer of the United States cocaine supply in the 1980s. Jung's early business of flying marijuana into the United States from the mountains of Mexico took a dramatic turn when he met Carlos Lehder, a young Colombian car thief with connections to the then newly born cocaine operation in his native land. Together they created a new model for selling cocaine, turning a drug used primarily by the entertainment elite into a massive and unimaginably lucrative enterprise-- one whose earnings, if legal, would have ranked the cocaine business as the sixth largest private enterprise in the Fortune 500.

The ride came to a screeching halt when DEA agents and Florida police busted Jung with three hundred kilos of coke, effectively unraveling his fortune. But George wasn't about to go down alone. He planned to bring down with him one of the biggest cartel figures ever caught.

With a riveting insider account of the lurid world of international drug smuggling and a super-charged drama of one man's meteoric rise and desperate fall, Bruce Porter chronicles Jung's life using unprecedented eyewitness sources in this critically acclaimed true crime classic.

BLOW: How a Small-Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellín Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All, by Bruce Porter

From Kirkus Reviews The up-your-nose, in-your-face life of George Jung, the high-school football star from small-town USA who became the American linchpin of the Colombian cocaine connection. Relying on extensive interviews with Jung and other key figures, Porter (Journalism/Brooklyn College) recounts a sleigh- ride-to-hell story of how 60's hippie innocence turned into 80's megadepravity. Porter dwells too long on Jung's unexceptional childhood (poor grades, risk-taking, shaky family life) but picks up steam when his subject comes of age--as a likable, handsome, well-muscled hedonist--and takes off for California and a haze of sunbathing, sex, pot, and LSD. Soon enough, Jung becomes chief marijuana importer to a number of prestigious East Coast colleges. Likening himself to Butch Cassidy, he moves his operation to Mexico and makes a mint until a series of busts stops him--temporarily. In prison, Jung befriends a young Carlos Lehder and links up with the Medell¡n coke cartel. The money bandied about is staggering: The Colombian suppliers gross $35 billion a year, and Jung buys a house just to stash his cash (lining floors and walls with $100 bills): ``Money, Learjets, fast cars, wild women, houses with maids,'' is how he recalls it later. Inevitably, the roller-coaster hits the steep downward slope: paranoia, as Jung snorts mountains of coke; a heart attack in his mid-30s; a car-bomb attack by Lehder, by now a business enemy; scary trips to Colombia, during one of which Jung watched coke czar Pablo Escobar execute a police informer; a flurry of arrests and escapes; finally, the Big Bust. But, as always, Jung comes out unscathed, turning state's witness (with Escobar's approval) to sing against Lehder. Set scot-free in exchange for his testimony, Jung now works in a legit delivery service, transporting fish up and down Cape Cod. How a happy hippie blew it on blow--finely researched, told with pizzazz. (Illustrations) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The movie was average but the subject matter was something I wanted to explore after seeing George Jung's picture at the end. I was not disappointed. I couldn't put the book down and throughly enjoyed it.As all biographies do, the initial setup of his formative years is somewhat boring and can be skimmed. Bad student, played football. Nothing else is relevant. But when the book overlays living in Los Angeles in the 60's with the drug trade, this book really heats up. Jung reminds me of Forrest Gump. Always in a place where drug history was happening. Particularly where his old grass connection is the key to establishing him as a major player in the new cocaine business. The book and the movie have many similar points but many different ones. For example, in the movie, his first stewardess girlfriend dies. But in the book, there is no mention of when and how they split up. In the movie, he misses his daughter and wants contact. There is no mention of that in the book. The book really projects that Jung ...got in the right business at the right time. But he's not really a smart guy. The movie covers some of his busts correctly but the Cape Cod bust that starts his downfall is almost unbelievable how stupid he could be. Read the book to find this bizarre fact.As a earlier reviewer who identified himself as a former drug runner stated, using your own product clouds your judgement and clearly that applied to Jung. Irrespective, this book gives great insight into the drug traffic business and shows what a bizarre environment it was. Somewhat like the Wild West. Read this book for entertainment value as it reads quickly and is very informative.

George became involved with smuggling pot in from Mexico in the 1960's & went on to become one of the founding members of the Colombian Cocaine Cartel led by Pablo Escobar. Geogre intially was Pablo's MAJOR U.S. cocaine distributor, was the one link Pablo had to the U.S. cocaine distribution network. Another Colombian, Carlos Ledher, stole George's U.S. connections, & cut him out of the business. George then basically married into a Colombian family, and started moving smaller cocaine contract loads through a relative by marriage-Humberto. Humberto was connected to Pablo Escobar. This book is well written, and also tells a bit about drugs, their cultivation, the human physiology of drug interactions, and how basic smuggling operations are established. It is also just a plain good story. I thought the ending was a bit sad though. To clear up the question of: "Is George free, or in Prison". George was free, and delivering seafood to restaurants in Massachusetts. He subsequently got busted smuggling pot from Mexico, and received a 22 year jail sentence in 1993-1994, and is currtely in prison at Otisville, New York.

Sloppy job, but still interesting By John Aware that the movie is only loosely based on a true story, I turned to this book for a more factual account of the rise and fall of George Jung. But Jung's own account of the execution he witnessed on the Escobar ranch, to pick an example, differs as much from the one in this book as from the movie!By page four I knew this wasn't secretly penned by Truman Capote. It is vulgar and loaded with malapropisms, for example: the word "obviate" is repeatedly used where "eliminate" is intended. Evidently no one at Harper Collins knows what the word means. "Secrete" is used for "secret." There are stretches long enough that I was able to get into the read before pausing to wonder what was meant by a non sequitur or a sentence that is not a sentence, but a slight effort by a copy editor or high school English teacher would have greatly improved the work. The editors and "fact checker" should all be serving time for criminal negligence. Terrible job.Carlos Lehder is portrayed as a reckless megalomaniac brazen enough to unabashedly ramp up his smuggling through Norman's Cay to full tilt --really taking it to another level-- seemingly without regard for how much attention it would draw; indiscretion ultimately did the cartel in. There are interesting tales of boaters being chased away from the island, including a retired Walter Cronkite! Once a boat was found adrift in that vicinity, spattered with blood.Surprisingly, considering the vast differences between this book and the movie, the fight scene with Mirtha driving up the I-95 one night actually did occur.Regarding the Eastham bust, George was said to be looking at a ten-year sentence for the coke, but the book makes no mention whatsoever as to whether Richard Barile did in fact have the machine gun he mentioned at least twice to the undercover cop that evening, possession of which would carry the same sentence under federal law --not to mention what the state of Massachusetts would have done to him. There are many such places throughout the book that left me wondering why something was covered so unevenly and then just abandoned. At another point it refers in passing to George having two children, with no mention before or after of a second child being born. Some of the "factoids" regarding aviation and firearms are hilariously inaccurate. A Hughes 500 helicopter becomes a "Huey 500." ("Huey" refers to an entirely different type of helicopter, and there's no such thing as a "Huey 500.") And once and for all, folks, a .357 magnum will not go through an engine block; that's a myth. (It just ricochets, leaving a tiny dent on the surface. Don't try this at home.)And for instant gratification search the web for "Norman's Cay."

Excerpt from AutotherapyThe Paris Médicale, The Practitioner (London), Practical Medicine (Delhi), Indian Medical Gazette (Calcutta, India), British Veterinary Journal, and other foreign journals.(3) It is now an axiom that a new method of therapy, or a remedy, must be tried out at least two thousand times in order sufficiently to eliminate the possibility of spontaneous cure; effects of suggestion; wrong diagnosis, etc. If this is true, is the authors method properly grounded? The reply here is quickly forthcoming: - As one of the two founders of the Volunteer Hospital in New York City; President of the Medical Board; Operating Surgeon; Consulting Surgeon in the Dispensary; and Genito-Urinary specialist, the writer has had unlimited opportunity of amassing a preponderance of clinical evidence as to the great therapeutic value of Autotherapy in various infections, almost weekly, during the years 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913, and 1914. Without making a systematic count of the letters received, it appears there are many more than two thousand physicians scattered throughout the world who are using Autotherapy successfully, daily, in both private and hospital practice. One physician in Pennsylvania has employed Autotherapy in over six hundred cases, and his results have been such that he has practically discarded the use of vaccines. Many have used it from three to five hundred times.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. That is a shame. This information, published at about 1914, should be available to all. It is so amazing and revelatory--also for mothers, and for breastfeeding mothers. I'm thinking of compiling some of the information for breastfeeding mothers, to aid in support of immunity for herself and her baby.

Don't miss the chance to download THE OTHER SON an uplifting new novel by Nick Alexander, on special offer throughout June. Selected by Amazon in the category: Best Fiction Books of 2015 "A gripping family drama – a tale of secrets, hope and redemption." From Nick Alexander, named by Amazon as the UK's 3rd bestselling indy author (#1 ebook hits: The Half-Life of Hannah , The French House, The Photographer’s Wife...) comes an intimate new novel. Alice has been lying to herself for years, holding fast to the belief that the needs of her family far outweigh her own. But her outwardly successful marriage hides dark secrets, and for much of her life, the children were the only reason she stuck around. These days, though her successful banker son lives nearby, his young wife seems to do everything she can to keep Alice at bay. As for Alice’s other son, he has always been something of a stranger and has been traveling for so long that Alice isn’t even sure what continent he is on anymore. Alice can’t help but wonder if the effort she expends presenting a united front to the outside world is actually helping anyone and what would happen if she suddenly stopped pretending. Could life, like the novels she devours, hold surprises in its closing chapters? And if she did shake everything up by admitting the truth about her marriage, would anyone be on her side? Has the time finally come for Alice to put her own needs first? For the first time in years, her heart is racing. Can Alice really change her life? Dare she even imagine such a thing? Praise for Nick Alexander's Writing Endearingly funny, bang up to date and spot on the truth -- Red. Honest, moving, witty and really rather wise -- Time Out. Heartwarming, thought-provoking, beautifully crafted story By Noelle Clinton I received this book on my Kindle immediately it was released, having pre-ordered it as I am a recent Convert but zealous Member of the Nick Alexander Admiration Society! I devoured 'The Other Son' in one sitting. The reason it's taken a couple of weeks for me to write this Review is because I wanted to wait a while after finishing it, to have a think about the story. It has so many layers of emotions, telling different facets of the Characters lives, and especially Alice's, from different perspectives. You are at times rooting for the Characters, other times annoyed or frustrated with them, but always invested. Read this book - you won't regret it!

By Felicity This is a book that I can recommend on so many levels. Not only is it beautifully written but it shows how each member of a family unit is damaged by abuse within the family and how they live their lives and conduct their relationships as a result of that abuse. With grace and care the author shows that despite living or growing up within an abusive environment we are all responsible for our own lives and happiness and that happiness can be a choice.

By Robert Oliver Grieveson First NIck Alexander book i have read, found it an absorbing read with some interesting characters - a somewhat unusual and interesting book revealing hidden lives and desires of the characters making for an enjoyable read. i have read there is a short sequel to finish off this story which leaves you with some questions. Some difficult family situations researched and written well and i would say pretty true to life. Will read him again for sure.

Coming of Age: Come Rain or Come Shine took more than ten years to write. The author, finding herself alone, her marriage of forty-two years imploding, examines each piece of her life to understand what happened to her. She “comes of age” as a senior, finding her voice to tell her story as truthfully as she can. She discovers who she is and transforms herself in the process. Others present in the story may view it differently, with varied colors and threads. This is only the author’s version of the fabric of her life.

Jay Well written, utterly candid, you might even say brutally honest, at least from the author's point of view. As an old friend of both the author and her ex-husband the book was a stark reminder of how little we really know the inner workings of others, even our good friends. Life is complex, the challenges unending as we try to cope with what we perceive to be the 'realities'. Readers of 'Coming of Age' are likely to see pieces of themselves as they turn the pages. . .

Harrison Martha Grossman's memoir strikes me as a more authentic and satisfying example of the Eat, Love, Pray genre than most. The author's description of the sacrifice of self in the triangle between husband and daughter, both beloved, is painful and true. She was able to describe the ways that each one was caught, which makes the book also fair. This is not easy to accomplish. The rewards are evident in the life being described. They are also present for the reader. I especially appreciate the emphasis onpersonal triumph...rather than on the relationship with a man as the prize. The writing...about place, the land, her homes, as well as the people in her life and history, draws the reader into a world worth knowing. Thank you, Martha.Victoria Harrison is a family systems psychotherapist in Houston, TX where she directs Center for the Study of Natural Systems and the Family.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Yeah for Martha! By Michael Scott Scudder Review by Thelma Phyllis Landis:The first reason is that I was in a writing group with the author during the time of her separation and divorce experience. The second is that many years previous I also went through a separation and divorce. In her book, Martha describes with intimate details the issues that preceded the failure in the marriage and is honest about the negatives that she brought to the relationship because of her up bringing and roots. She also had the courage to include the sexual issues that became problematic. I admire that courage.I recommend the book for both women and men dealing with relationshipissues. There is much to learn that can be quite useful to have any relationship work better.

Broken Silence, "A Military Whistleblower's Fight for Justice," is a modern-day Scarlet Letter story of how former Navy Lieutenant Commander Sy'needa Penland was convicted of adultery after she blew the whistle on defense contracting fraud. Those who operate in darkness and seek to cheat and defraud the government, banded together to destroy the former Supply Corps officer's impeccable career and used her conviction as an "example" to others. Differing from Nathaniel Hawthorne's romantic fiction, Broken Silence is a true survival story of a courageous military whistleblower's fight for justice. Similar to Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter, Sy' was forced to trade her gold oak leaf and stripes she proudly wore on her military uniform for a symbolic "A" of adultery. Interestingly enough, Sy' was "single." Adultery is not a crime in civilian court, but the Navy's top brass who went after the honest financial officer knew this could be a tool that would lead to her destruction. They wanted to "muzzle" her any way they could and used the military's justice system to silence her, until now.

By Navy Brat Broken Silence is a page turner from beginning to end and I highly recommend this book for any service member who has encountered injustice, be it racism, sexism or any form of discrimination while serving our country. I applaud Lt. Commander Penland's bravery and commitment in her fight for justice and I pray she gets the relief she deserves.

6 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring Story of Courage, Perseverance, and Faith! By Old Poet 54 Excellent book, outstanding story, incredible person, and modern day hero! Lieutenant Commander Sy'needa Pendland's amazing journey from an enlisted Sailor to mid-grade Naval Officer. A person of exceptional integrity and sense of duty, she faced many challenges and obstacles as she rose through the ranks. Refusing to compromise the oath she took as an Officer in the United States Navy, LCDR Penland refused to "go along to get along" and continually took the hard right over the easy wrong. While she paid a high price for doing the right thing, her actions provide a sterling example of someone who exemplified what a true leader is. As a 31-year Army veteran, I found this book hard to put down--a refreshing and inspiring story. A must read for everyone!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Juvenile attempt at analysis By S. meyer This is a total waste of time, unless one just wants a student summary of the events in the book and a juvenile analysis of the story's elements. This work is short, unimpressive, and poorly written. It is filled with clichés and generalities. I was struck at the end when it recommended the book to people who had "lost a mother to the hands of death". Really? Mr. Summary also generalized his use of the word "style". He spent much time clarifying his statement that "the author's main style of analysis is symbolism". Unfortunately, this author does not understand the meaning of the word, nor does he have depth of understanding when he speaks of symbolism. He points out the symbols that would be obvious to a tenth grader. As a matter of fact, I tend to believe the author IS a tenth grader. I'm very disappointed, as I wanted this to refresh my memory of a book I read two years ago, and instead, I paid to read a high school book report.

Seniors, we have challenge! Toilets around the world are in one word: perplexing! The squatty potty can be found in luxury hotels, theaters, and shopping malls around the world. This marvel of science requires that you squat on your haunches over a hole in the floor, which means you need to do a balancing act. That is not an easy task! (Especially if you are a senior.) Here are some important questions to ask yourself before traveling: What are my options if my roommate cancels out at the last minute? Can I take someone else on the cruise in their place? Is this covered by travel insurance? In fact, what exactly does my insurance policy cover? What happens if I lose track of time when I'm sightseeing and the ship leaves port without me? What are my rights if I am asked to leave the ship in another country due to illness or injury? Do I have a choice? What arrangements do I need to make in advance if I have special needs, or if I want to travel with my service-animal? If you are a senior, and you are planning a trip or cruise, these are things you need to consider. You must know what to do in the event that the unexpected happens, because it often does. Learn from my experiences in what to do - and not do - so that you can have a fun, hassle-free vacation! - Sara Raney, Senior Travel Advisor/Consultant

The classical vocabulary is hard, but there is enough heart on sleeve theatricality to keep one absorbed. It's a bit like giving the bible 2 stars, but this assessment is made as someone who is definitely not bilingual, but has reasonable German. By the way, I think that the Verdi opera "I Masnadieri" is based on this play.

Take nearly a billion people with a deadly disease, spend billions of dollars treating them, and end up providing good care to only HALF of them! Should that be acceptable? But that is exactly how we deal with people with high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Worldwide, hypertension is the top-ranked avoidable risk factor for premature death in adult men and women, according to a recent global study. Nearly 40 million people see their doctors yearly for hypertension in the US. Yet, nearly half of them fail to achieve adequate control, putting them at risk for heart disease, strokes, and kidney failure. This book offers a cardiologist’s analysis of the reasons behind this failure of the healthcare system. Diet, cost of medication, poor compliance with treatment regimes, drug side-effects, confusion about goals, and the issue of refractory hypertension are all addressed in a clear and concise manner, using simple language. Many patients with high blood pressure have no symptoms, even when their hypertension is not well-controlled. This can cause a false sense of security, and devastating consequences. Avoid becoming a statistic! Learn more about how you can beat the menace of hypertension with simple, logical methods.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Timely book! By pamela morgan As a nurse, I see a lot of patients and relatives with high blood pressure. I also see a lot books and scholarly articles about high blood pressure. Most of the books are expensive and dense, and the articles are not easy understandable. I have long thought that someone should write a book in simple language which could be understood by regular folks. And which is affordable for regular folks.Well, such a book seems to finally be here. Shiv Harsh avoids jargon as much as possible, and simplifies concepts which are often complex for even those of us in the medical field. Yet he does not oversimplify, by repeating, "Lose weight, exercise more," as a cure-all.There is much in this book which can be implemented right away by patients and doctors without much difficulty. I like the section on the DASH Diet, which is often ignored, but can be easily incorporated in your day-to-day life. Most patients struggle with blood pressure control. This book offers them some timely and straightforward advice.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was amazed to find simplicity of expressing medical and technical facts ... By chandra vyas I am a cardiologist, practicing in USA for 29 years. When I saw Dr. Shiv Harsh’s book on Blood Pressure and difficulties in controlling it, I was thinking, it is just another book on BP. I read it just out of curiosity, can it really help the patients ? I was amazed to find simplicity of expressing medical and technical facts for layperson. Patients usually get confused on listening to medical jargon. Often times, we as doctors tend to use too many technical terms in explaining to patients, in the end they remain ill informed. This book has explained all aspects for controlling blood pressure, with such accuracy of facts and giving latest recommendations until the book was published. It will be helpful for doctors as well in explaining to patients in simple terms. Kudos to Dr. Harsh, I will be looking forward for any future books from him to help patients. I give it five stars.Chandra Vyas, MD, FACC, FACP.

As a R.N. who has extensive experience with the repercussions of uncontrolled B/P this is a well written book on the reasons why control is vital. A refreshingly candid and wickedly funny look at life’s second half from Everybody Loves Raymond TV sitcom star and three-time Emmy Award–winning comic Brad Garrett. In this no-holds-barred book of comedic and personal essays, Brad Garrett divulges his hilarious—and irreverently honest—experiences with the many challenges and ultimately joys of middle age, as he advises us on how to best navigate the dreaded “second half” of life. Ranging in topics from genetics to genitals, sex to stereotypes, and alimony to addiction, Brad leaves no stone unturned in this raw, laugh-out-loud look at getting older. With pieces such as “No Scales in Heaven,” in which Brad points out the essential pointlessness of overthinking diet and exercise, and “Celebrating Your E.D. (erectile dysfunction) During Your Mid-Life Crisis,” the star comedian encourages you to forget the overwhelming concerns that accompany middle age and to welcome the laughs—even if you throw your back out doing it. Penned in the blunt, conversational, no-nonsense style that has cemented Brad’s status as an icon in the comedy industry, this autobiographical book will help you accept that, no matter what, we all get old. So you might as well embrace it.

When the Balls Drop, by Brad Garrett

Review “Dear Brad, I just read the book. If you were this funny on the show we coulda done another year. What the fuck? Seriously though, everyone should buy Brad’s book. It’s a win-win. You’ll relate, you’ll laugh, and if he does well as a writer he’ll give up television." (Ray Romano)“Little does Brad Garrett know but his balls never dropped. He had none to begin with. This is not a ‘mid-life’ memoir, this is a ‘life-support’ memoir. Do us all a favor and pull the plug.” (Kevin Nealon)“Of all the balls in all the nut sacks in all the world, Brad Garrett’s are the last pair I’d want to think about. But not unlike most of his dates, Brad has forced them on us. So before this winds up in the Costco remainder bin, be the first and only on your block to buy a copy. He’s just a sex tape and an appearance on Dancing With The Stars away from reviving his career.” (Nathan Lane)"Garrett is a naturally funny writer...readers will laugh. A laugh a lot." (--Michael Ian Black in a New York Times Book Review)

I Was a Ten-Pound Preemie

As stated earlier, I am a pessimistic optimist, or what I like to call a “pissed-omist.” This is a person who has lived long enough to know not to expect much from most people or life in general, but still allows him- or herself the hope that somewhere under all the horseshit there may possibly be a pony. As you’ll see, there were many factors that influenced the theories, neuroses, and occasional lunacy that inspired this book, and I feel you deserve the inside track. Therefore, please bear with me as I give you a bit of insight into my life to improve your understanding of how I arrived at this particular mentality. I was born Brad H. Gerstenfeld on April 14, 1960, to Alvin from the Bronx, New York, and Barbara from Bellingham, Washington. I tipped the scales at nine pounds, eleven ounces. My dad never knew what the H in my name stood for, and my mother didn’t tell me until I was twenty that it stood for Harry, after her favorite uncle. The birth certificate just says “H.” If she was that embarrassed about the name, why the hell would she give it to me? Spell it out or pick another. “I was such a large sperm, my mother went into labor during conception.” I wrote that joke when I was fifteen, which made sense considering my mother used to tell total strangers, “He was so huge at birth that the doctors wanted to break my pelvis or Brad’s shoulders in order to get him out of me, but I insisted they just use the tongs.” (She had trouble remembering the word “forceps.”) To this day I don’t know if that tool was actually used or not, but there are two tiny indentations on my skull that fill up with water when I sweat. Every man’s life (and a portion of my stand-up) revolves around the mystery that is his penis. In reality, without one, none of us would exist, so it deserves exploring. Let me start by saying that mine has never been right. Unfortunately, I think it all began with the rabbi, who must have had some resentment toward my family that he indirectly took out on me. My paranoia knows no bounds . . . Maybe the mohel just stank at his job, like most people. Or maybe he had ADD and found himself distracted by the mound of chopped liver formed into the shape of the Wailing Wall or the hubcap-size cheese Danish sweating on the buffet table. I always found it so odd that people could eat immediately after seeing an infant’s penis being mangled by a stranger in a black robe and sketchy beard. How can an act so visceral and cringe-worthy lead directly to food? Perhaps it’s merely diversion, or nervous eating, or years of conditioning. It’s probably the same mental disconnect by which Italians can dismember a body, dump it in the river, and then go for ribs. I suppose this is where the term “comfort food” originated. The bottom line is my circumcision was fucked up. I have more of a two-skin. The Yid must have stopped the trimming somewhere in the middle. He bailed on my rehemming like a Vegas dealer suddenly asked to go on break. He clapped his hands, wished everybody luck, and left the cards where they were. It’s no secret that when a circumcised penis is at rest, it appears as if the little fella is wearing a cozy turtleneck sweater, right? Not mine. It’s as if my dick is wearing a hoodie. He looks like the smallest criminal on record. Like a little poker player with his head on his chips. Either way, I got ripped off. Literally. And it’s made me second-guess my manhood my entire life. My urologist, Dr. Spiegelman, who by the way is the only person not to pass out from laughter after I remove my pants, believes the size has nothing to do with the botched circumcision. He also tried to convince me that in my case, “the appearance of having a small penis is only an optical illusion because it is on a body of massive girth.” Optical illusion? He actually brought up magic in a medical context to make me feel better. In other words, like in real estate: location, location, location. I suppose if my penis were on a Chinese fellow, it would look enormous. I will have to test that theory the next time I’m dining at Twin Dragon. *   *   * In addition to bad taste in mohels, my mom had a flair for drama. It went along beautifully with her Kabuki makeup and sequined outfits. She was like a Liza Minnelli impersonator without the gay husbands. I’ll never forget when I was six years old and I saw two dogs getting it on for the very first time. Bewildered and concerned, I blurted out, “Mommy, what’s wrong with those two dogs?” “Well, darling,” she said after a considerable pause, “the dog in the front is very sick, and his friend is pushing him to the hospital.” This obviously messed me up for years to come, because every time I injured myself, I would seek out the neighborhood dog in hopes of being led to the ER. Regardless of what anyone believes, almost every guy marries someone either very close to his own mother or the complete opposite. This is why I’ve spent the majority of my adult life with women who are borderline comatose, for fear of being with someone who inadvertently breaks into “Don’t Rain on My Parade” during a canoe ride. When I was seven, my parents divorced. It was very difficult for me, but I felt worse for my older brothers, Jeff and Paul, whose biological father literally disappeared after divorcing my mother, never to show his loser face again. To this day, I cannot comprehend a parent who could walk out on his or her children. Some people are truly heartless and narcissistic enough to do such a thing, I suppose. I always felt bad that I had such an involved father and my brothers would never know theirs; even though my father adopted my brothers early on, their relationships were strained at best. You really couldn’t blame my brothers, because how could they trust a father figure again, let alone one so quickly? My dad was a six-foot-five handsome chap with tough good looks and piercing blue eyes. He also, unfortunately, happened to be bipolar. Back in that era, no one knew what bipolar was, so he was written off as moody, difficult, compulsive, and extravagant, with grandiose ideas of a better life that kept him in constant debt. But he was my hometown hero, and I desperately needed one. He always had my back regardless of the situation, and I loved him for that, although it didn’t make for a realistic later life. He used to say, “It’s you and me against the world, kid,” and as wonderful and comforting as that may have been at the time (especially considering I always felt very alone), it often made me wonder why the world was against us in the first place. I guess having several ex-wives can make you feel like you’re on the run or that life is based on a “you versus them” mentality. But he was super-cool and different from most dads, with his Indian jewelry and antique cars. He was literally the greatest salesman who ever lived, and through his constant, sometimes manic drive, he was able to convince me that I could be anyone and do anything. *   *   * After the divorce was final, my mother moved us to an apartment in the San Fernando Valley. Soon after, she would start dating a gentleman whom she met over the phone. He was cold-calling parents of boys who were of bar mitzvah age off a list he got from the local temple, offering his services to provide music and entertainment for the upcoming event. His name was Lionel Ames, and he was known for being the town’s most popular Jewish singer and bandleader, playing weddings and bar mitzvahs all around Southern California; once in a while he would play one of the local clubs on the Sunset Strip. He was every Jew broad’s dream guy: handsome, a freelance cantor/balladeer, and he could sing the shit out of “My Yiddishe Mama.” He also drove a purple Chevy Impala (though he swore it was blue), and I’m sure that gave him some Hasidic street cred. Lionel would soon become my mom’s third husband, just in time for my brother Paul’s bar mitzvah. The entertainment was free. And Lionel became my closest link to anyone involved in the entertainment industry. Lucky for me, he shared every tidbit he could. It took a special man to marry my mom with three boys in tow, and he had his hands full attempting to maintain some stability in a very emotional (and often turbulent) household. Throughout my childhood, my father tried to see me as often as possible, while also bouncing from one sales job to another. Over the course of his life, he worked as a stockbroker, owned a design studio, sold “questionable” land in the high desert, owned a pie restaurant, and spent twenty-two years selling hearing aids, among other things. He was a brilliant guy who could figure out my high school algebra homework even though he barely finished seventh grade. He had a photographic memory and a laugh that made you laugh. And he was funny as hell. Sure, he had swings like Benny Goodman, but not when it came to being a responsible father. Just about every weekend, I would stare out my bedroom window, waiting for his car to pull up, as it always would. As I grew older, I became more of a best friend and wingman than a son. As a teenager and young adult, I found this pretty exciting, but after a few more years of maturing into manhood, I realized it wasn’t the healthiest of scenarios. Our close bond meant that my dad recognized the toll their divorce was taking on me, and when I was nine, he introduced me to a child therapist. Nate was like a hip college professor who smoked a pipe, wore sleeveless sweaters, and drove an original yellow MINI Cooper. I had to leave my classroom every Thursday at ten A.M. to see him, and my excuse to all of my dumbfounded classmates was that I had a dentist appointment. They knew something else was going on, because in those days my teeth looked like hell, and who on earth has a dentist appointment every week? But in 1969, if a kid went to see a shrink, he had to be crazy, right? Life was already too shitty at school to let that one out of the bag, so I got the reputation as the kid who had to constantly go to the dentist. Which of course turned into “Gerstenfeld has like a hundred cavities . . .” Nate and I would walk around the neighborhood and talk rather than sit in his office. One of his exercises for helping me conquer my extreme anxiety was to coerce me into stealing oranges from people’s trees; years later, he admitted he just loved oranges. He was a compassionate and kind man when it came to communicating with children, and to this day we remain close friends. My father was always strained financially, and Nate told my dad he could pay for my sessions over time so I could continue with therapy. I never forgot that, because it made me feel that maybe I was worth something. As grateful as I am for the positive aspects of my early years, there is no doubt the more troublesome ones left their mark. At three years old, even though I appear happy in photos, I already have bags under my eyes that look like I’m burning the midnight oil while holding down two jobs to make ends meet. The bags have followed me throughout my life. They’re my earned stripes, my medals of horror. They’re from years of insomnia combined with my Semitic coloring, constant worrying, angry masturbation, my inability to roll with shit, fear of the Nielsen Family, feelings of inadequacy when showering, and the daily dread that comes with pursuing the American dream. Take it for what you will: nature or nurture. It wasn’t always pretty, but it got me here.

Some Laugh Out Loud Moments By Lupine Smile I would like to thank Gallery Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review When the Balls Drop. Besides being hilariously funny, Brad Garrett has some sage advice regarding aging, parenting, and everything in between. Like most great comedians, his self-deprecating humor had me laughing out loud. Between those moments, however, Brad Garrett chronicles his career from its humble beginnings to its greatest successes. I thoroughly enjoyed the snapshot into the life of this famous comedian and highly recommend When the Balls Drop. Whatever your stage in life, I guarantee you will find something to laugh at with Brad Garrett's unique perspective on his middle years.

By Louise Glass I loved Brad Garrett on Raymond and despite the title hoped to learn about his life on and off the show. First-he should have hired a ghost writer. I read this trite in under one hour and when I read a good book I savor it. This autobiography had me racing to the end hoping to find some things I enjoyed and there were a few.....very few.I am no prude but this book is filthy. I feel like I can picture his male appendage in detail after all the descriptive prose he allotted it.One thing bothered me a lot. He does NOT respect women. Possibly his problems stem from his parents many marriages and he suffers from lack of self esteem because he is drawn to prostitutes, waitresses, and strippers. He denigrates women whenever he can.I did enjoy reading about his start as a stand up comedienne working with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.Brad Garret is a good father, cares about children (he started a charity for ill kids) but as a boyfriend and husband we are chicks and broads out to steal every dime he makes.I wanted to learn more about Raymond and basically I know he wanted to make it with Patricia Heaton and the late great Peter Boyle farted a lot. Enough said. When I closed the book I was relieved to be over with it. I honestly cannot recommend it unless you are a huge fan of potty jokes from cover to cover. Read at your own risk.

By Kindle Customer The women are all "broads " trying to get your money and you might well use their vaginas to slide your credit card through. Yes! He says that. Brad is proudly pictured in blackface. Author rants. ALL l females are looking for security and ALL men are looking for excitement pages and pages of that kind of sweeping generalization. Tons of stuff about getting taken by golddiggers who do not deserve any of the income the man made
