Excerpt from The Power of SoundA considerable part of the substance of this book has already appeared in the shape of articles in the Fortnightly Review, the Nineteenth Century, Fraser's and Macmillan's Magazines, and Mind. This disconnected mode of publication was specially unfavourable to a subject where the prevailing doubt and disagreement as to the very first principles precludes taking anything for granted. In their present more coherent form, I trust that my main positions may at any rate have gained in clearness. One word may be said as to arrangement. My primary concern being with the æsthetics of Hearing, and in particular with Music, the various analogies and contrasts which other regions of experience present have been introduced in connection with the different divisions of the main subject; which has led to a somewhat sporadic notice of other arts. To those who believe in transcendental links, making all the arts One, this treatment may appear unsatisfactory; but it certainly conduces to the distinctness of my humbler line of argument. My chief object, after certain preliminary explanations, has been to examine, in such a way as a person without special technical knowledge may follow, the general elements of musical structure, and the nature, sources, and varieties, of musical effect; and by the light of that enquiry to mark out clearly the position of Music, in relation to the faculties and feelings of the individual, to the other arts, and to society at large.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Power of Sound Deserves Further Attention By Geoffrey Oelsner I've been reading around for a few days in the photo facsimile of Gurney's original 1880 edition, and am now about to order the paperback reprint edition. On the basis of my appreciative readings, I disagree with the above reviewer and would give this book a full 5 stars. It's a very precise, sensitive phenomenological study that unfolds many nuances of listening to and truly hearing music. It's a rare amalgamation of aesthetic insights and observations about the psychophysiological impacts-- the power-- of music over us. Gurney was an early psychologist, a vibrationally sensitive musician himself, and a deeply feeling person. All of these aspects of his own rich life-experience are enfolded in this book, which is of course now a bit archaic in tone, but which presents to the patient reader a multi-dimensional, precisely rendered view-- a view as phenomenologically descriptive and psychologically nuanced in its own way, as, say, the mystical works of the contemporary spiritual realizer/explorer A.H. Almaas in his great book The Inner Journey Home, or his "Diamond Mind" series of books. Gurney was a remarkable, intrepid explorer of music, a man of subtle mind and caring heart. He had Big Ears! And he clearly intended this book to enhance We the People's appreciation of the Power of Music.
