An intrepid voyage out to the frontiers of the latest thinking about love, language, and family

Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, offers a firsthand account of the complexities and joys of (queer) family-making. Writing in the spirit of public intellectuals such as Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes, Nelson binds her personal experience to a rigorous exploration of what iconic theorists have said about sexuality, gender, and the vexed institutions of marriage and child-rearing. Nelson's insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of caretaking becomes the rallying cry of this thoughtful, unabashed, uncompromising book.

The Argonauts, by Maggie Nelson

Review

“[Nelson's] book-part memoir, part critical inquiry touching on desire, love, and family-is a superb exploration of the risk and the excitement of change. Thinking and feeling are, for Nelson, mutually necessary processes; the result is an exceptional portrait both of a romantic partnership and of the collaboration between Nelson's mind and heart.”―The New Yorker

“Maggie Nelson slays entrenched notions of gender, marriage, and sexuality with lyricism, intellectual brass, and soul-ringing honesty in The Argonauts.”―Vanity Fair

“Reading Maggie Nelson is like watching a high-wire act. Her books are inspiring. . . . Because of her dazzling sentences, I will read whatever the daredevil writes. She cozies up to ideas unlike any other American writer.”―The Boston Globe

“Maggie Nelson has proven her brilliance-a special blend of poeticism and philosophy, of theorizing and prose-weaving-in her eight previous nonfiction releases. But in The Argonauts, the gifted critic and scholar breaks generic ground with her work of 'auto theory,' which offers a glimpse into the writer's mind, body, and home. . . . The Argonauts is a must-read.”―Bustle

“So much writing about motherhood makes the world seem smaller after the child arrives, more circumscribed, as if in tacit fealty to the larger cultural assumptions about moms and domesticity; Nelson's book does the opposite”―The New York Times Book Review

“Maggie Nelson is one of the most electrifying writers at work in America today, among the sharpest and most supple thinkers of her generation.”―Olivia Laing, The Guardian

“In The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson turns ‘making the personal public' into a romantic, intellectual wet dream. A gorgeous book, inventive, fearless, and full of heart.”―Kim Gordon

“[Nelson's] is a radicalism that looks like the future of common sense. . . . A singular book.”―Vulture

“A loose yet intricate tapestry of memoir, art criticism and gently polemic. . . . It's a book about using the writings of smart, even difficult writers to help us find clarity and precision in our intimate lives, and it's a book about the no less intimate pleasures of the life of the mind. . . . The Argonauts is a magnificent achievement of thought, care and art.”―Los Angeles Times

“Nelson's writing is fluid-to read her story is to drift dreamily among her thoughts. . . . She masterfully analyzes the way we talk about sex and gender.”―Huffington Post

“Nelson's vibrant, probing and, most of all, outstanding book is also a philosophical look at motherhood, transitioning, partnership, parenting, and family-an examination of the restrictive way we've approached these terms in the past and the ongoing struggle to arrive at more inclusive and expansive definitions for them.”―NPR

“Brilliant like nothing else you've ever read, Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is as hard to pin down as it is stunning. In sharp, intense bursts of language, Nelson melds critical theory with her most personal musings, as she navigates falling in lust and love, explores gender, sexuality, and motherhood, and builds a family with artist Harry Dodge. Although slim, The Argonauts contains worlds of thought and feeling, challenging our assumptions and moving our hearts. This book is the first must-read of the summer.”―BuzzFeed

“In a culture still too quick to ask people to pick a side-to be male or female, to be an assimilationist or a revolutionary, to be totally straight or totally gay, totally hetero- or totally homo-normative-Nelson's book is a beautiful, passionate and shatteringly intelligent meditation on what it means not to accept binaries but to improvise an individual life that says, without fear, yes, and.”―Chicago Tribune

“Reading Nelson is like sweeping the leaves out of your mental driveway: by the end of one of her books, you have a better understanding of how the world works...The result is one of the most intelligent, generous, and moving books of the year.”―Publishers Weekly, "Best Summer Books 2015"

“The Argonauts finds Nelson at her most vulnerable, arguing for a radical rethinking of the terms in which we express love.”―The Paris Review, "Staff Picks"

“What a dazzlingly generous, gloriously unpredictable book! Maggie Nelson shows us what it means to be real, offering a way of thinking that is as challenging as it is liberating. She invites us to 'pay homage to the transitive' and enjoy 'a becoming in which one never becomes.' Reading The Argonauts made me happier and freer.”―Eula Biss

“Maggie Nelson cuts through our culture's prefabricated structures of thought and feeling with an intelligence whose ferocity is ultimately in the service of love. No piety is safe, no orthodoxy, no easy irony. The scare quotes burn off like fog.”―Ben Lerner

“There isn't another critic alive like Maggie Nelson-who writes with such passion, clarity, explicitness, fluidity, playfulness, and generosity that she redefines what thinking can do today.”―Wayne Koestenbaum

“Once again, Maggie Nelson has created awe-inspiring work, one that smartly calls bullshit on the places culture--radical subcultures included--stigmatize and misunderstand both maternity and queer family-making. With a fiercely vulnerable intelligence, Nelson leaves no area un-investigated, including her own heart. I know of no other book like this, and I know how crucially the culture needs it.”―Michelle Tea

“One of the greatest books I've ever read.”―Annie Sprinkle

“Reading Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts helped me to feel some things I've long thought about but hardly been able to express regarding the socialization of the maternal function, which is the dispersed, dispersive essence of the futurity we present to one another until one is not another anymore. There's the violence I commit in making a claim for that futurity, and the violence I endure when that claim is granted. There's the exhaustive sharing that takes form as writing. There's the 'orgy of specificity' when the inexpressible is held and released in each expression 'cause I just want to sing your name even when I don't want to sing your name. There's the love story buried in every 'I love you,' and in every 'I love you' there's a contract for destruction and rebuilding. There's The Argonauts, which is one of the greatest books I've ever read.”―Fred Moten

“In the 17th century a book like Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts might have been called an anatomy, by which I mean it's a learned, quirky, open-hearted, often beautiful naming-of-parts. The anatomy never forgets the fragile embodied world-its carnality or its finitude. And such is The Argonauts: a memoir (debriefing, really) at once raw, pensive, exhilarating, sad, funny, and embodied in the same profound way.”―Terry Castle

About the Author Maggie Nelson is a poet, critic, and nonfiction author of books such as The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning, Bluets, and Jane: A Murder. She teaches in the School of Critical Studies at CalArts and lives in Los Angeles, California.

Throughout, while referencing various queer theorists and engaging some of their ideas, Nelson keeps to the intimate tone, which makes her memoir so stirring, through her lyrical style and realness. If you want a book that manages to acknowledge both the problematic way gender is often dealt with and the sheer amount of possibility there is to the human experience, this book is for you.

Beautifully written meditation on almost everything By Wade M I appreciate any artist who can relate theory and philosophy to everyday life - who can take their specific experiences and draw resonant themes without losing the details of what is specific. This is an accessible, exciting romp through theory, art, motherhood, philosophy, relationships, gender, pregnancy, death, and so much more. The author relates her thoughts, experiences, and connections without claiming very much as universal. It is a fine example of how gifted people live thoughtful, well-examined lives.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Best book I've read in years By the_ames Best thing I've read in months, in fact years. Defies categorisation, which is apt, because it's partly about the unhelpfulness of categories, and the imperitive of freedom, creativity, self-expression, and acceptance. I unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone with a brain and a heart. It is also - incidentally - beautifully, lyrically, mind-expansdingly, heart-openingly written. Upon finishing it, I promptly logged on to buy more Maggie Nelson.

The name Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. (1867–1932) is synonymous with the decadent revues that the legendary impresario produced at the turn of the twentieth century. These extravagant performances were filled with catchy tunes, high-kicking chorus girls, striking costumes, and talented stars such as Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Marilyn Miller, W. C. Fields, and Will Rogers. After the success of his Follies, Ziegfeld revolutionized theater performance with the musical Show Boat (1927) and continued making Broadway hits―including Sally (1920), Rio Rita (1927), and The Three Musketeers (1928)―several of which were adapted for the silver screen. In this definitive biography, authors Cynthia Brideson and Sara Brideson offer a comprehensive look at both the life and legacy of the famous producer. Drawing on a wide range of sources―including Ziegfield's previously unpublished letters to his second wife, Billie Burke (who later played Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz), and to his daughter Patricia―the Bridesons shed new light on this enigmatic man. They provide a lively and well-rounded account of Ziegfeld as a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a lover, and an alternately ruthless and benevolent employer. Lavishly illustrated with over seventy-five images, this meticulously researched book presents an intimate and in-depth portrait of a figure who profoundly changed American entertainment.

Ziegfeld and His Follies: A Biography of Broadway's Greatest Producer (Screen Classics), by Cynthia Brideson, Sara Brideson

Review "Well written and entertaining, this title gives Ziegfeld his due."―Library Journal

"Ziegfeld was one of the most important theatrical producers of the early twentieth century, and the Follies (and its Girls) are still remembered today. He had a long-lasting effect not only on Broadway, but on social mores, and this book does a great job over covering that, in a fascinating way. The Bridesons know their stuff."―Eve Golden, author of Anna Held and the Birth of Ziegfeld's Broadway

"The authors have created a detailed, sweeping narrative of Broadway showman and entrepreneur Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., both as to his professional rise and fall and the full details of his complex, busy personal life. While there have been books devoted to him before, this new account is quite compelling both in scope and detail, and will certainly be the new definitive biography of the opulent life and times of the great Ziegfeld."―James Robert Parish, author of The Hollywood Book of Extravagance: The Totally Infamous, Mostly Disastrous, and Always Compelling Excesses of America's Film and TV Idols

"For those with an interest in theatrical history, the new book will recommend itself as the first detailed biography of Ziegfeld in four decades."―Washington Post

"Through meticulous research, the authors reveal the fascinating and often contradictory layers that made up this enigmatic man and defined his glamorous times."―Library Journal

"Ziegfeld and His Follies is the best biography of Ziegfeld. It goes beyond him as an institution and explores the person of Ziegfeld."―Washington Book Review

"Ziegfeld's innovation lay in his ability to spot unheralded talent and corral it into gala evenings, in an apotheosis of Americans' love of youth and fun. Ziegfeld turned pretty into beauty and goofy into wit. . . As sisters Cynthia and Sara Brideson observe in Ziegfeld and His Follies, he "gave women an indomitable presence in a male-centric era. . . . Even his mistresses were fiery and volatile." . . . The Bridesons have clearly done a great deal of research, and they successfully unveil what can be known of Ziegfeld's personality. Enigmatic and secretive, he sank his identity into his work, leaving little for the analyst to examine."―Wall Street Journal

"There is much to enjoy in the Bridesons' book, including 76 photographs ― some of the rare, all of them evocative."―Washington Post

"[T]he most encompassing book about [Ziegfeld], if not the most engrossing."―Bay Area Reporter

"The Bridesons have clearly done a great deal of research, and they successfully unveil what can be known of Ziegfeld's personality. Enigmatic and secretive, he sank his

identity into his work, leaving little for the analyst to examine."―Ethan Mordden, Wall Street Journal

"[. . .] [T]heater-loving sisters Cynthia and Sara Brideson shine fresh and stimulating light on the genius of one of Broadway's greatest impresarios. Rich in research and broad in perspective, the Bridesons' book frames the classic revue era of the New York stage with a reverential but honest approach to Florenz Ziegfeld's extraordinary personality and career."―Examiner.com

"The Bridesons' is the first scholarly [book], offering to theater historians a responsibly documented narrative of a highly influential Broadway producer.

[. . .] [A] useful tool for scholars of theater history."―Cercles

A graceful read, well researched, and full of remarkable material By thomas gladysz "Ziegfeld and His Follies: A Biography of Broadway's Greatest Producer" is a graceful read, well researched, and full of remarkable material. It has to be, because its subject and his milieu were themselves so interesting. Authors Cynthia and Sara Brideson provide a lively and well-rounded account of impresario Florenz Ziegfeld as a son, father, friend, lover, and twice married husband (Anna Held and Billie Burke) -- as well as a showman, producer, and alternately ruthless and benevolent employer. Ah, all those beautiful showgirls! Illustrated with over seventy-five images, this thoroughly researched account presents an intimate portrait of a figure who profoundly changed American entertainment. Bridesons' book draws on a wide range of sources ― including Ziegfield's previously unpublished letters. It is one in a shelf-full of books on Ziegfeld and the Ziegfeld Follies. It may well stand as the definitive account.

The reader gets a broad look into the lives of Ziegfeld and his follies capturing not only the interest of early theater and film fans but also those who are interested in human nature and history posed in turn of the century American culture. I appreciate the equal attention the authors give to the female players in Ziegfeld’s world emphasizing their importance and influence on his success. Included in this beautifully bound biography is an extensive collection of photos that are as stunning as the gorgeous cover. It’s a book you will find yourself saying as you read, “just one more page, just one more page.” This book is accessible for all readers both casual and academic, definitely a fine addition to your library!

I have read other books on Ziegfeld, but the emphasis was on his shows in those books. This one studies his personality and private life. There were a lot of facts I learned here for the first time. I also learned a lot about Billie Burke, Lillian Lorraine, Eddie Cantor and Will Rogers.Pick up this book and have a fun filled time travel trip to New York in the early years of the last century. I hope this is the beginning of many, many biographies by the Brideson sisters. They are wonderful writers.

Just what I needed By Autumn L-R I'm in a deep, dark place of caretaking and struggle, and quite honestly, few things these days hold my attention past 10 minutes. I read this book in one go, and felt that I'd been reminded about some essential truths about myself. Jennifer's writing is an invitation to hope, to openness, and to the power of yes (and no!)

David Bowie has been one of pop music’s greatest interviewees since January 1972, when he famously risked career death by asserting to Melody Maker that he was gay. Although he wasn’t yet a big star, it was a groundbreaking moment. And over the years, Bowie has failed to give an uninteresting interview. It might be said that he has habitually used the media for his own ends, but he has paradoxically also been searingly honest, declining to ever be coy about his ambitions, his private life, and even his occasional ennui.   Bowie on Bowie presents some of the best interviews Bowie has granted in his near five-decade career. Each interview traces a new step in his unique journey, successively freezing him in time as young novelty hit-maker, hairy hippie, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke, plastic soul man, fragile Germanic exile, godfather of the New Romantics, eighties sellout, Tin Machinist, and, finally, permanently, artistically reborn beloved elder statesman of challenging popular music. In all of these iterations he is remarkably articulate. He is also preternaturally polite—almost every interviewer remarks upon his charm.   The features in this book come from outlets both prestigious (Melody Maker, Mojo, New Musical Express, Q, Rolling Stone) and less well-known (The Drummer, Guitar, Ikon, Mr. Showbiz). In all cases, Bowie enables the reader to approach the nerve center of his ferociously creative and prolific output.

Review “David Bowie has always been a consummate mythmaker, and this fascinating anthology captures him at his most mysterious and mischievous, laying himself bare and building walls around himself in the same mercurial instant.”—Peter Doggett, author of The Man Who Sold the World: David Bowie and the 1970s“[T]his is a fascinating journey through the mind of a musician many people claim to “know” but who proves time and again that his own essence is often foreign to himself. An asset for Bowie fans.” —Library Journal“A must for Bowie fans.” —Booklist“It’s great fun to browse through. And it’s the closest you’ll get to an actual Bowie autobiography.” —Goldmine, The Music Collector's Magazine“...this imaginative compendium of more than thirty interviews is a welcome addition to an ever-lengthening bibliography. […]So good, you want to read it as you revisit his peerless catalog.” —Classic Pop“Bowie on Bowie is an incredible glimpse into the man who unarguably made the world not only more interesting and more enjoyable, but more inspirational.” —Blogcritics

Book written in the 30's about Lawrences' travels in Italy By Elizabeth Gillespie I found the book fascinating as it was written in the 30's and travel was so much more difficult then. It was very detailed and expressive as only Lawrence could be. I found myself thinking in Black and White thoughts as most of the trip was quite dreary. It is worth a read.

This book is an illustrated collection of short stories and memories of a Zimbabwean Professional Guide who loves what he does! All of the stories are factual accounts, that happened to me, except the one about Alistair Hull, a close colleague. These stories were about incidents that happened to me during the early years of ecotourism in Zimbabwe, prior to 2000. All of the photographs (except where indicated) were collected by myself at different times during this period, and I have attempted to present them in a sequence similar to the stories.

About the Author The author was born to English parents in Bulawayo, in what was Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. At a very early age he showed a deep inherent interest in natural history. His hobby eventually lead him into the developing safari industry after Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, when he joined Kazungula safaris as an Assistant Manager on Fothergill Island, Kariba. Surrounded by wildlife of all sizes his affinity with wildlife and tourism matured and he obtained his Professional Guides licence in short order. He lead wilderness trails of four to six day duration deep into the Matusadona and Mana Pools National Parks. Gavin spent four years reading for an Honours degree in Biological Sciences, and started training guides for the industry too. He now is a partner in a successful custom safari operation creating and leading bespoke safaris into 17 countries in Africa. Gavin is married and lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.

His practical guide knowledge was amazing and enhanced by his university training in biology. We saw every conceivable animal and close enough to take wonderful photographs. The unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing a pride of lions take down a zebra and watching the subsequent feast at 20 meters was breathtaking. Gavin topped off the daily treks with festive dinners under the African skies usually featuring local delicacies and great wines. The "Walk with the Elephants" day was especially memorable. Read the book, call Gavin and retain him for the experience of a lifetime!

How do we rise above anger and self-doubt to achieve our most deeply held goals? Countless writers have tried to answer this question--perhaps none with more searing honesty than Dr. Johnny Lops, a respected Williamsburg psychiatrist whose refreshingly no-nonsense and humane approach to personal and professional achievement draws on his own colorful experiences growing up in blue-collar Brooklyn during the 1980s and 1990s. Witty, funny, and sometimes disconcertingly frank, Dr. Lops takes us back to his obsessive, anxiety-ridden childhood (complete with twelve-year-old neighborhood tough guys); his disastrous early dating experiences; and the process of self-discovery that enabled him to become a professional actor, doctor, and amateur marathon runner. In this vividly written and engaging book that is part memoir and part instruction manual, Dr. Lops offers eleven simple, practical, and effective tools for maximizing our performance potential and regaining control over our lives.

By Jeff Linamen There are some interesting antidotes from the author's life here but I didn't really see any 'tools' to take away. Basically, Lops says, 'don't be negative'. He does talk about some basic principles like time management and letting go of the past- nothing new in the arena of self help books. The book is an easy read and mildly entertaining. I'm just not sure that it offers anything substantial or lives up to it's title. I received a free copy as part of the Goodreads First Read Giveaway program.

PDF Ebook The Power of Sound (Classic Reprint), by Edmund Gurney

Excerpt from The Power of SoundA considerable part of the substance of this book has already appeared in the shape of articles in the Fortnightly Review, the Nineteenth Century, Fraser's and Macmillan's Magazines, and Mind. This disconnected mode of publication was specially unfavourable to a subject where the prevailing doubt and disagreement as to the very first principles precludes taking anything for granted. In their present more coherent form, I trust that my main positions may at any rate have gained in clearness. One word may be said as to arrangement. My primary concern being with the æsthetics of Hearing, and in particular with Music, the various analogies and contrasts which other regions of experience present have been introduced in connection with the different divisions of the main subject; which has led to a somewhat sporadic notice of other arts. To those who believe in transcendental links, making all the arts One, this treatment may appear unsatisfactory; but it certainly conduces to the distinctness of my humbler line of argument. My chief object, after certain preliminary explanations, has been to examine, in such a way as a person without special technical knowledge may follow, the general elements of musical structure, and the nature, sources, and varieties, of musical effect; and by the light of that enquiry to mark out clearly the position of Music, in relation to the faculties and feelings of the individual, to the other arts, and to society at large.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Power of Sound Deserves Further Attention By Geoffrey Oelsner I've been reading around for a few days in the photo facsimile of Gurney's original 1880 edition, and am now about to order the paperback reprint edition. On the basis of my appreciative readings, I disagree with the above reviewer and would give this book a full 5 stars. It's a very precise, sensitive phenomenological study that unfolds many nuances of listening to and truly hearing music. It's a rare amalgamation of aesthetic insights and observations about the psychophysiological impacts-- the power-- of music over us. Gurney was an early psychologist, a vibrationally sensitive musician himself, and a deeply feeling person. All of these aspects of his own rich life-experience are enfolded in this book, which is of course now a bit archaic in tone, but which presents to the patient reader a multi-dimensional, precisely rendered view-- a view as phenomenologically descriptive and psychologically nuanced in its own way, as, say, the mystical works of the contemporary spiritual realizer/explorer A.H. Almaas in his great book The Inner Journey Home, or his "Diamond Mind" series of books. Gurney was a remarkable, intrepid explorer of music, a man of subtle mind and caring heart. He had Big Ears! And he clearly intended this book to enhance We the People's appreciation of the Power of Music.

Let's Visit Istanbul!: Adventures of Bella & Harry, by Lisa Manzione

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-The globe-trotting Chihuahuas visit monuments and important buildings, discover a bit about the region's history, and learn a little about Turkish culture. Most of these details are relayed through the pups' conversations. The steady stream of sometimes dry facts is interrupted as readers come across a lighter moment when Harry wonders if he will see a flying carpet, and tension rises when Bella becomes temporarily separated from the tour. Amazingly, the pups are able to visit many tourist attractions in just one day. A simple outline map of Turkey and short list of Turkish words/phrases are included. Unfortunately, the book lacks a pronunciation guide, and while there is also no glossary, terms like "minarets" and "menemen" are defined during the story. Exaggerated pictures of Bella and Harry, in brightly colored watercolor illustrations, are a contrast to the more stately renderings of buildings such as the Ortakoy Mosque and Dolmabahce Palace. Lucco's images of people are less defined. This combination of anthropomorphic story and geographical guidebook could be useful in social-studies classes where instructors prefer teaching content through stories. Families traveling to Turkey might find the book a helpful tool in preparing their children for the trip.-Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron, OHα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Merhaba, friends! Intrepid travelers Bella, a very feminine-looking Chihuahua, and her younger brother, Harry, are back to star in their ninth travel adventure—this time to Istanbul, Turkey. They kick things off with a ferry ride on the Bosphorus Strait, where their ears flap in the breeze, and they take in the First Bosphorus Bridge, which connects Asia to Europe. Then, the canines hop off in Ortakoy, a neighborhood in Istanbul. They’re introduced to the Orkatoy Mosque (and have a conversation about what a mosque is), sample the local cuisine, visit a palace or two, and stop by one of the oldest and biggest covered markets in the world . . . the Grand Bazaar. The two make for amiable tour guides, even if the prose is somewhat bland and the illustrations verge on cartoonish, particularly when it comes to our pop-eyed stars. Still, it’s not every day a kid gets to take a trip to Istanbul, and this makes for a nice introduction to the customs and hot spots. Elveda (that’s goodbye in Turkish). Grades K-2, --Ann Kelley

At her recent ballet recital (when I gave her St. Petersburg - Russian ballet!) her grandmother commented how much she loves these books. Not only is she excited to receive them, she wants to read them over and over. I recently recommended this series to a co-worker whose daughter and her family are travelling the world. She was so excited about these books that she gifted Istabul through Kindle because the family spent a month there. Educational, fun, and Bella & Harry are adorable! Would highly recommend.

One day a parent in our room asked if there is anything he can do to help with the classroom. I told him I was having a challenge finding something appropriate to share with the children about Turkey. It only took him a few days and he found "Bella & Harry Let's Visit Istanbul". With a reminder of fiction vs. nonfiction, I read the book to our students. They loved it! I appreciate the innocence and the simple details of the area that are shared. It complements our themes perfectly. Thank you for creating the series!

This is not a work of fiction. This is real life. This is the true story of a man caught in a surreal situation, one that could happen to anyone. Even you. Nick Hunter is an IT professional working in China. When he is appointed as the head of service in Exos limited, a fast growing, well reputed company, he is absolutely thrilled. Thirteen years of hard work has brought him to this juncture in life; things can only get better from this point on. Or so he thinks. A phone call from a colleague's mother sets off a chain of horrifying events that take Nick on a downward spiral towards the unknown as he finds himself in a legal imbroglio over his involvement in a recent project in the company. In a country where expats have minimal legal rights, Nick is baffled when the police name him as a suspect in the case. With five of his colleagues detained by the police, he fears that being their manager; he will meet with the same fate too. With the police being difficult, the embassy being indifferent and his organization hardly providing any support, Nick is fast running out of time and options before he ends in jail. What will Nick do?

I was hoping it would eventually come out but it never did. Being only 55 pages long it didn't take that much out of my life but still curious as to what his group and his company were doing or not doing.

Screw Dinkle The Owl, by Mr. Bill Olson

About the Author At a snow covered dairy farm in western Wisconsin on the first day of December 1932 my Grand Mother helped deliver me into this world. Two hours later a doctor arrived in a horse drawn cutter sleigh moments ahead of a winter storm. After examining my mother and me he set out to return the fourteen miles back to town. Struggling through the blinding snow he had a heart attack and died never to register my birth. I finished high school in 1950 at age 17, left the farm, and went to work at a hardware store in St. Paul Minnesota for a while before heading out west. When the Korean War broke out I enlisted in the Navy. After my enlistment I came home and have lived a good life; learned to fly, travelled, and other things. My ability to obtain a travel passport was complicated by the lack of a birth record, but it was eventually worked out.

Tales from the Blue Line by Rob Riley is a compilation of twenty-nine separate police investigations conducted by Rob Riley and his partners, while they were Milwaukee Police officers. Riley was sworn in as a police officer in 1971 and retired as a detective in 2001. His career was unique even from the beginning, when with only a few months on the job he was recruited to be an undercover narcotics officer. After seven extremely intense years undercover and one year in uniform, Riley was promoted to the rank of detective where he spent the rest of his career. From purchasing illegal drugs from people on the streets to executing nearly a hundred search warrants, his time in the Narcotics Squad seemed like more than a lifetime of police experiences. Twenty-two years as a major crimes detective, Riley connected with high ranking officials in the District Attorney’s office, as well as some of the most highly regarded defense attorney’s in the country. He was a private investigator for two years after his retirement.

People tend to consider serial killers such as David Berkowitz (Son of Sam), Angelo Buono Jr. and Kenneth Bianchi (the Hillside Stranglers) or even the uncaptured Zodiac killer as the worst of the worst when it comes to serial killers. Yet, would it shock those same people to learn that there are dozens of more depraved, sick and unfortunately prolific killers in the world? Perversely, US serial killers have gained notoriety through the media, whether it is the nightly news which tends to adhere to the axiom “if it bleeds, it leads….”, or even through our justice system which in the pursuit of transparency in the court room, has transformed trials into entertainment spectacles which are the equivalent of a soap opera. However, notoriety does not equal number of victims, for out of the dozen killers profiled in this book, only one American - Gary Ridgway (the Green River Killer) – is on the list – and even then only at #10. This book will list the 12 most prolific serial killers in modern history; those for whom killing is an up close and personal relationship. Humans for whom the cries of their victims’ pain, fear and despair give the same if not more pleasure than the touch of a lover or the hug of child.

They hail from China, Russia, India, South America, and elsewhere in the world, including an American. While the information is interesting, the lack of editing or proofreading makes it difficult to read.Includes photos.
