Going Wild, Book 1 (The Survival Series), by Miles Martin From the Author I began writing this in 1970 in pencil, later, on a manual typewriter.I had to start over 4 times from scratch. This first book took 20 years to write.I learned to write as I went along. I had some major obstacles. The first was,I had a preconceived idea of what my life I was writing about would be like. I'm17 years old. My life will be a bright comet across a bleak sky. Or I will die trying.I did not die, and my story was not the blazing comet I envisioned. "Now what!" I wanted my book to be a mountain manstory in present time, first person. Never been done before. Problem was , if Iam into reality, I am not becoming the mountain man I dreamed of and hoped I'dbe. I'm making a lot of mistakes, and getting laughed at. A second major problem as I write is, the book is about me,and me alone. I'm out there in the middle of everything. There are no other characters!How can I write saying, "I saw, I did, I am, I went, I accomplished. I, I, andI!" Even if an ego book, it is not entertaining without characters! I was stumped,even as I kept writing anyhow. Somehow I'd work that out. I showed no one. Noone else reads my work for 20 years. Totally alone, I believed. I wrote,edited, took all the pictures, did thecover, set it up for printing. No help whatever.No one saw it till it was in print. I finally solved all the issues. The story can be whatever itis, not necessarily what I want it to be, but simply a story of following adream! The struggle, the changes! If I arrive or not, going for it! If it is abook of mistakes, let it be well written! As for I me and I again? There is 'I'the Id. 'I' the ego, and 'I' the alterego. All separate characters with personalities. Let the games begin! I did not know when or where the writing would end. Muchlike my art. I simply 'begin.' I met a Native Shaman when young who explained howart is for him. "Oh no I am not the master! No I am not in charge. No it is notmy work! I am the tool. The material tells me what it wishes to be, and Irelease it's spirit!" It took me 20 years to understand that simple concept. Ihad to unlearn my white man ways. Or, yes, I understood by instinct as thisShaman knew me. I'm told I am the only white man this famous man ever talked toin his 90 years. If this is my story I am just the actor. The script waswritten by God. Thus I have no idea what is coming up next, not now, notsince the beginning. I guessed at the time began, one Mountain man book. Not a series. What I amdoing is revealed one step at a time on a need to know basis. All I do is trust,and write. Only when I am done do I read it, and try to figure out what itmeans, and or how to describe my writing. I am not trying to fit anything intoany preconceived category. These concepts expressed take on more meaning in the booksthat follow. In this book one, I am 18 and own the world, know everything, 10ft tall and bullet proof. Never faced a problem I couldn't solve. Never went to lift something and beenunable to. Never been sick, never failed. Never been brought to my knees. Noteven God tells me what to do. It's a good time in one's life! Over 50 yearslater I can laugh. But it was good years to remember. The last books so farseem to have nothing in common with the first. Or there is some common threadthe reader must see, and decide upon, as to what it means.

Maxlaughed, I asked what his problem was and he said, "You are all alike!" Iasked, "And who am I supposed to be like?" He told me "All you famous people!" Isaid, "Famous? Why? The more I learn, theless I know! My life is filled with failed goals!" He laughs again and says, "JohnLennon said exactly the same thing when I interviewed him." I say "Yea right!"He replies, "I am one of the highest paid, best photographers in the world. Do youthink the New York Times would send me out on a dead end assignment,interviewing a nut, a loser, false dreamer? You are among the best in the worldat what you do, just as John Lennon is the best there is at what he does. That'swhy I'm here." There is no way in Hell I am in the same category as John Lennon.This must be a line of bull, yet there must be 'some reason' the New York Timeswould spend the time and money to send the best photographer in the world toAlaska to see me.

I would get up in the morning and read 4 or 5 pages, read 8 to 10 more at lunch time...every time I had a break, I would read all I could; and I would read as much as I could at night. I never knew what was going to happen next, but I was never disappointed! When I got done with the book, I had my boy read it to see if he found it as interesting as I did; and he agreed. You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Miles - Godspeed!

Half asleep, or maybe fairly awake now, I awaken to the sound of fish poles falling in the smokehouse. I go dashing up the path to the smokehouse in my underwear. I am ready to thrash that pup soundly. The sound of more poles falling enrages me to where I have murder in my heart as I enter the tin building. The light is dim in here, but I hear chewing, so head to that corner. Seeing red, foot drawn back, I'm ready to kick the dog. As I round the corner of the smoke stove I start to yell, "you damn...", but "dog" sticks in my throat as I kick a bear in the butt! We both say "s__t" in surprise at the same time. The bear jumps straight up, and in midair, spins around and lands on all fours facing me. His eyes are wide open in astonishment, as are mine. Both our mouths hang open in disbelief at what has just happened. It is obvious this bear has never been kicked before, and can not comprehend how such a thing has come to pass. He's waiting for me to either wet my pants, or follow up and smash him to the ground. My feelings of anger at the dog turn to instant apology, but I know if I show this, the bear will jump me. Seeing the question in his eyes shows me what to do. I bluff him by leaning forward and growling. I think the bear is impressed, because he blinks fast. This gives me confidence. I lean forward more, and with as deep a voice as I can muster...."grrrr'. The bear 'woofs' and runs off.This is just one of hundreds of stories, too original, too unique to be made up. Many of them force me to laugh-out-loud. Face-to-face encounters with bears, moose, wolves, beavers and even wolverines; in their environment. It is the story, actually many personal stories complete with photos providing a unique opportunity to peer into the life of a simple, unassuming man, who lived a life many of us have only dreamed about.An artist, a hunter, a survivor. At 18, he is dropped off in the wild, interior of Alaska, with little or no food, little tools, little direction and little knowledge of what to expect. But, through trial/error and perseverance, he not only survives, but thrives and for the next 20 years lives in the wilds of Alaska on a custom-built houseboat; seeing and experiencing things few of us ever will.The author is a fantastic story-teller as he re-lives his first years (through diary and journal records he kept) in Alaska. Although not written for pure entertainment, the stories are told with such dry humor and straight-forward candor, that not only are they fantastically-entertaining but educational as well. You can actually feel what it must be like to be alone, hundreds of miles from anyone in the dead of winter and living off of the land.Although I have read many books on Alaska (my favorite subject), This book, and the entire series, have become my treasured favorites. I have read them many times. I am sure you will also enjoy.

By Matt Smoot I very much enjoyed the way he wrote the book with out trying to change who he is. His language and personality was represented through the pages. It was a fun adventure.
