FBI Diary: Home Grown Terror, by Peter M Klismet Jr

About the Author Pete Klismet served his country with two tours in Vietnam on submarines. Following military service, he earned a college degree, and then worked for the Ventura Police Department in Southern California. While there, he attended graduate school, earning two master’s degrees. He was offered and accepted an appointment as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In a twenty-year career with the FBI, the author was highly-decorated, served with distinction in three field offices, and received numerous awards and recognition from the FBI. Pete was selected to be one of the original ‘profilers’ for the FBI, perhaps the FBI’s most famed unit. Before his retirement, he was named the National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Following his retirement, he accepted a position as an Associate Professor and Department Chair of a college Criminal Justice program. Having now retired from that, Pete and his wife Nancy live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

By Jackie Taylor Zortman Living just 114 miles from Cortez, CO and with my husband being the chief of police here during that terrifying time, I really enjoyed reading Pete's version of what was happening on the inside of the investigation. His book is well written and attention grasping, holding one's attention to the very end. Pete's research and knowledge of this case has a depth that allows him to write from the perspective of an FBI Special Agent who actually had his boots on the ground.At the time of the manhunt, my husband's officers would go to Cortez and participate on their days off. Naturally, the terror spread as far as our town, knowing our husbands were out there in their patrol cars and the killers somewhere unknown. For that reason, an editor hired me to write an article that I called The Siege At Cortez, so I did a great deal of research on this incident myself. Coincidentally, that article became an award winner last July 2014 as Pete was wrapping up his book. Therefore, I was anxious to read Pete's Home Grown Terror and learn the things I didn't know, having not had an inside track as deeply connected as Pete. I could not put this book down and read it in about four days. I highly recommend it!

Klismet I have to first admit that I've not completed your first book, yet.The next one was interesting and mildly amusing. On Saturday I decided tostart 'HOME GROWN TERROR' again. After several hours and 215 pages, since itwas late, I reluctantly put it down. Yesterday morning (Sunday - yeaBRONCOS!!) I finished the book. To me it was akin to experiencing a movie inthe mind. It was gripping in its development and wanting to see how this endedmade it (as I said) difficult to put aside. The character background insights,the scenery depictions, the explanation of the difficulty in 'controlling' themassive search and the egocentric responsibility of the participants wasfascinating. While I don't personally recall this specific incident, the timeframe or its conclusion, your book's explanation was (the only thing I canthink of) was 'bittersweet.' No sensational final 'shoot out' but thediscovery of the remains of the fugitives make it almost 'make-believe' -which it is not. Very good book!!

I found it so intriguing, I stayed up late and finished it in two nights. I was expecting a rather dry textbook type account of an investigation and search for fugitives. However, it read more like an in-progress story with active back and forth dialogue between characters as the search and investigation develops before the reader's eyes. I have had few books, especially non-fiction books that I couldn't put down. This is one of them.Although I never met Peter Klismet during the Four Corners Manhunt, I was one of the tactical team members who was dropped off in the desert by military helicopters to search the forbidding terrain for days on end for three men who killed one police officer in cold blood and wounded several others. In my informed opinion, Klismet got it right and with no embellishments. I highly recommend this book. It is very simply a good read.

About the Author Robert Khayat is a former college football All-Star, All-Pro kicker for the Washington Redskins, law professor, and president of the NCAA Foundation. He has received the NFL Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as the National Football Foundation Distinguished American Award. Dr. Robert Khayat, a graduate of Ole Miss and former pro-football player who served as the university's chancellor from 1995 to 2009, has just come out with a new memoir, The Education of a Lifetime. As someone whose interest in sports is limited to the Alabama-Auburn game every year, I was surprised at how readable it was as a memoir. Intertwining humorous anecdotes from his football career with the challenges he faced during his chancellorship, Khayat chronicles his attempts at tackling opponents (in football and in academia), his efforts to increase university standing, funding, enrollment, and obtain membership with Phi Beta Kappa, the national academic honor society. He also sheds light on his part in Ole Miss's extremely controversial decision to distance itself from the Confederate flag in 1997, a symbol which some regard as an unofficial symbol of the school. While not all will agree with his decision about the flag, it's clear that Khayat is someone who cares deeply about his home state, and how it's viewed by the rest of the country. Overall, it's an informative, uplifting read, recommended for curious football fans and students of local history.

Education of a Lifetime By Beth H Worth I purchased this book as a gift for my daughter who got her undergraduate and masters from Ole Miss and her son who graduated Magna Cum Laud, Phi Beta Kappa, etc from the Ole Miss Honors College in 2011. I looked through the book and started reading. Could not put is down because of all the history of the University I have known. Even if you did not attend Ole Miss, it is a good read.

Its also a good book on effective management as Dr. Khayat and his personal touch and hands on approach were very productive.

Synthetic book teaches synthetic philosophy By ronfpugh This is one of those made-to-order books -- it does not correspond to the photo published by Amazon, and was somewhat disappointing. Why? The print is too small; and it is published by OCR software which wreaks HAVOC with spelling and punctuation.Poor quality product; only slightly better than not having it at all.

Excerpt from The Semantic Sources of the Words for the Emotions in Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and the Germanic Languages: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Comparative Philology, General Linguistics, and Indo-Iranian PhilologyIt is the purpose of this investigation to trace and to interpret the semantic history of the words for the emotions in some of the Indo-European languages, and to establish a comprehensive classification of their sources and their shifts in meaning.I believe that, except for certain difficulties mentioned on page 9, the intention has been realized. At any rate, the wider heads marked by capital letters (A-G) and by Roman numerals will accommodate any more specific developments that may have failed to appear in the material to which I have limited myself. So words with an earlier meaning 'smile' for which I have, contrary to expectation, not succeeded in establishing a development to 'be pleased, or so' will readily fall into group B. V, and so forth.Such an attempt at collective interpretation, if carried out on a large scale, is bound to clarify the history of the meaning of the individual words, because shifts that occur independently in separate words and in separate languages must be due to constant psychological factors, in this case, to the nature of the emotions and their relation to the rest of consciousness. To point out these psychological factors, as I attempt to do, is to explain the development of the meaning.It goes without saying then that it was necessary to give a brief sketch of the subject matter which the words under consideration come to denote, i.e. the emotions. This was all the more imperative because strongly divergent opinions are held in regard to the psychology of the emotions, which are decisive in the interpretation of many shifts. On the whole, I accept Wundt sposition as represented in his Vorlesungen über die Menschen- und die Tierseele (not his altered attitude in the last edition of his Physiologische Psychologie), with the modification suggested by Titchener, Feeling and Attention, p. 160ff. This offers the most satisfactory basis for the explanation of the semantic changes recorded in the words for the emotions.
