About the Author Jane Turley was born in the Malverns, England, but spent her childhood in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare where she spent years gazing out of her Silver Cross Pram. Her excessive exposure to salty air and seagull poop left her deeply traumatized and possessing a bizarre sense of humour. It has been a problem for her (and everyone else) ever since. Despite her many shortcomings, Jane has written for the BBC, the literary magazine The View From Here and is the author of the short story collection A Modern Life. Jane can generally be found entertaining readers on her long-standing humour blog The Witty Ways of a Wayward Wife where she recounts her adventures as the acerbic Housewife Extraordinaire.

Jane captures the reader's heart with her understanding of everyday family life By Brian Parkin Jane Turley’s new novel “The Changing Room” is about Sandy an everyday woman approaching middle age who is submerged with managing a full time job at a furniture store, looking after a family of three children and providing administrative help with her husband’s construction business. If that’s not enough, the little time meant for herself is spent looking after her Mum who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.Jane writes from the heart and there’s a little bit of her in some of her characters. She combines humour with poignancy, a difficult feat to achieve well. Laugh with Sandy as she watches her daughter in the school play or discusses the hilarity of phone sex with her friends. Cry when Sandy realises her Mum isn’t going to recover from her illness or when her friend is suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer.Jane lets the reader see that no matter how difficult life is, there’s always a silver lining as long as you are prepared to put the effort in. “The Changing Room” is about life in suburbia and how the roles of most women are fixed or predetermined early on in their lives, and how just a little a push from family and friends can change your life for the better.I enjoyed Jane’s “The Changing Room” and can only hope that she writes a sequel to Sandy’s life that is just as amazing.Brian Parkin, author and reviewer. She's cheerful and friendly and encouraging, and has often mentioned that she's been working on her novel. That novel is "The Changing Room". I boughta copy, keen to see what she'd produced, expecting - hoping - to enjoy it.What I didn't expect was to be totally swept away by it. The book is written from the point of view of Sandy, a wife and mum who is a great salesperson. She doesn't love her job at the furniture store, but she likes people, and her work helps support her husband's building company in the tough times of recession. During the course of the novel, Sandy moves from her sales job at the store to a more flexible one working from home, then finds a surprising extra source of income when a friend reveals she runs a sex chat phone service.Throughout all this Sandy is caring for her mother, who is sliding deeper and deeper into Alzheimer's. Sandy wants to put off taking her mother into care, but it has to happen eventually, for her own safety as much as for Sandy's sanity.I won't detail everything that happens in the book, but suffice to say, I read it in two sittings. Sandy's life is busy, it's funny, it's sad, it's unexpected and familiar at the same time. More than anything, this book feels REAL. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

By Amazon Customer I have been following the writings of Jane Turley for a while on her blog and social media, so I was delighted to have the chance to read her first novel. I enjoy her writing style because it is filled with quirky humour, that is similar to my own, so I was expecting plenty of laughs in this book. It didn't disappoint. There were numerous laugh out loud moments, but there was also some very charming, poignant writing that elevated this book, in my opinion, to five stars. The characters are relatable and the storyline meanders along quite pleasantly with some unexpected twists that may make you blush if you are that way inclined. I'm not the blushing type, but if I ever get over to England I reckon a girls night out with the author would be a complete hoot, and I might be able to add a few interesting words to my vocabulary.As others reviewers have given a basic outline of the story and characters, I won't do so, but I will finish off by saying that I highly recommend this as a light-hearted all round feel good book.Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but I signed up for it after reading the first chapter via the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon which made me want to keep reading. I'm glad I did.

This reviewer recalls an evening in the 1960s when she substituted for an ailing colleague at a college auditorium in Los Angeles. Not knowing her name the concert was almost avoided, but what an evening of revelation that was. This graceful large lady flowed out onto the stage in a gown with a piano keyboard pattern, tossed off the usual few arias and songs and then broke into some intimate French cabaret songs and in one fell swoop rose to stardom in the audience's hearts. That stage presence coupled with a ravishing beautiful soprano voice carried her into the tough roles like Judith in Bluebeard's Castle, Sieglinde, Ariadne, Alceste, and Leonore.Now we have her memoir and it is not surprising that she writes exceedingly well. This book is not just about Jessye Norman: this memoir is about the journey through racism and all that followed the civil rights movement. Her life is as impressive as her vocal gifts and for anyone who has ever had the privilege of being in the opera house or concert hall when Jessye Norman performs, this book is a must read. Jessye Norman's STAND UP STRAIGHT AND SING! shows that your gifts will make room for you By Cyrus Webb I can't tell you how much I am inspired by Jessye Norman's life that is chronicled in her book STAND UP STRAIGHT AND SING!She is able to take us not just into the path that led her to the greatness she is now enjoying, but acknowledges those who were inspirational to her along the way. It all began in the home. It was a place where she was encouraged to not just thrive but to be the best of herself.At a time when it was expected that girls would be born, go through schooling then get married with children... Jessye writes this: "I craved bigger. And I found it hard,even at an early age, to fit my mind, body, and spirit into the too-tiny box carved out for girls and women of my generation." A gracious memoir By Experienced Editor The structure of Jessye Norman's memoir parallels a musical program, arranged from "Prelude" to "Postlude" and "Coda." The midpoint is "Interlude," a tribute to the great Marian Anderson. Lyrics from spirituals, art songs, and other pieces from Miss Norman's wide repertoire begin and end each chapter, binding the content together in the way that chorales unify a Bach cantata or spirituals interconnect the parts of Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time.Each chapter has its own theme and could stand alone. Miss Norman begins by describing the foundations from which her life philosophy grew: the diligence and vision of her grandparents; the dignity and resilience maintained by her parents during the Jim Crow era; and her own early years in Augusta, Georgia. Subsequent chapters discuss places she has been, people she has known, experiences she has had. Of course music is the constant throughout. I particularly appreciated learning from her thoughts on singing as craft and art form.The tone is positive throughout the book. Even the chapter "Racism as It Lives and Breathes" avoids bitterness. She relates incidents but does not dwell on them. Instead, she demonstrates a sense of self-worth that refuses to be defined by someone else's prejudices. To her credit, she does not identify the offenders, although she freely names the people she has admired and respected in her life.So why did I give this memoir only four stars? I couldn't help wishing an editor had been more alert to the repetition. In her enthusiasm for her art, the author repeatedly describes working with her colleagues as "a joy" or "a privilege" or "a pleasure." She is frequently "thrilled." Music is "beautiful" and "wonderful." The same word may appear many times on a page, sometimes more than once in a single paragraph. I have no doubt that these expressions are sincere. Still, the power of a word is weakened when that word is used over and over and over again. Trimming the redundancies would have made a stronger text.After reading only a few chapters of this memoir, I found my self thinking that the word to best describe Miss Norman is "gracious." Her narrative voice is generous, confident, yet humble. It was fitting, then, to come across this sentence near the end of the book: "I think that growing older in grace and with grace has a great deal to do with one's attitude toward life's progression ..." Despite my quibble with the editing, I recommend this interesting and gracious memoir.

By Whistlers Mom But what if "all of her life" is all too short?This author and his wife fell in love as teenagers and insisted (against parental opposition) on marrying at twenty-one. Like many in their generation, their childhoods were marred by poverty and early death. Wales was poor and mining and other available jobs were dangerous and unhealthy. Some managed to remain cheerful and loving; others were embittered by the harshness of their lives.Richard trained as an accountant - not his first choice, but an easy, well-paid profession compared to many. They had two beautiful children and a lovely home. Then the ovarian cancer that ran in Rachel's family struck again and she was dead without being able to see her children marry or hold her grandchildren. Because of the family history, her daughter Carys was at high risk for the same cancer. She was advised to be screened frequently and to marry and have children early, followed by a hysterectomy. She did fall in love and marry, but during her pregnancy she, too was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She gave birth to Abigail, but didn't live to see her baby's second birthday.As to little Abigail, it's a story that's all too common now. Most of the time, grandparents are separated from grandchildren by divorce, but sometimes it's by death and remarriage. And so the grandfather who has been struck three mortal blows wrote this book for his granddaughter. He wants her to understand the laughter and joy and closeness of the happy times. He wants to explain his visceral need to protect his only daughter from harm and the pain of learning that he was powerless to do so. He wants her to know how much she was loved and wanted.Ironically, I almost stopped reading after the first pages of DEAR ABIGAIL, which I found cloying and overly sentimental. I'm so glad I kept reading because it turned out to be a beautiful, honest, funny, gut-wrenching book. This author has published several novels and he's a good writer. Even if he couldn't tell his story in such wonderful, lyrical prose, it would still be a great story. It's a reminder to all of us of the fragility of life. It's a testament to the power of love and the MEMORY of love in the face of even the greatest tragedies.

When I can feel that depth of emotion, I know that it is a well written book. Richard cares about his family deeply. His daughter is diagnosed with ovarian cancer and he is left to care for his newly born Granddaughter Abigal, as she battles Cancer, while Abbys husband is working to support his family. I thought Richards Son-In-Law treated him horribly after he moved on and remarried. I hope one day Richards Granddaughter stumbles across this book, and is able to learn of the great sacrifices her Mother made for her. This is a book that is written truly from the heart. About the love of a Loving Father and a Granfather, wanting contact with his Granddaughter.

As I traveled to my mother's funeral back in Sweden in 1999, I realized that my role had changed drastically. I was now the older generation and the guardian of my parents' legacy. The fact that I am an only child makes this responsibility even more poignant. I reflected on these things as I met friends and relatives at the funeral, some of whom I had not seen for more than 25 years. Most of them lived only a short distance from where they were born. I, on the other hand, had left my “home port” and tied up for longer or shorter periods in several places on another continent. My relatives find much of their sense of belonging in their surroundings and familiar places. Having lived in eight different homes in four states in America and two countries since my wife and I were married, my sense of belonging is somewhat less geographically based.

I will describe some of the formative events and adventures that have brought me to retired life in Colorado and near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. There have been many changes and surprising turns on this journey of life. But some things have not changed: my beliefs and values based on my Christian worldview.

From the Author The Enigma of Childhood Ronnie Solan I would like to invite you to delve right in and explore the enigma of the art of couplehood and happiness. You may find you are one of those people who succeed in the practice of this universal art, or alternatively, discover you may resist it, unwittingly blemishing or spoiling your relationships with your children or spouse, or even with your coworkers, when part of a team. Almost all of us enjoy love relations. Repeatedly, we feel that love is bonding us. On occasion, it may be a play, a discussion or a professional interest that brings us together with others of a similar persuasion. Such relationships seem very banal and easy to create. In my book, however, I wish to elucidate why it is so complicated to maintain a satisfying relationship, and how couplehood is an art, which, starting in infancy between parents and children, continues throughout life in numerous shapes and variations. What is it that arises in the mind of each of the partners, each a separate individual who, similar to their partner in some essential ways of being, nonetheless remains so very different? Partners may have a common desire to come together, yet each has secret yearnings foreign to their partner. Each hopes to fulfill his own familiar 'brand' of bonding in the relationship, often forgetting that his (or her) partner comes equipped with other nuances of bonding that may guide their needs. Thus, each is attracted to the familiar aspects he sees in his or her partner, yet resists their otherness.  How can we safeguard our relationships, even though the sense of strangeness hurts? How will we manage to maintain an emotional balance between proximity with our partners, and alertness toward their otherness, the sense of strangeness they evoke? This is the main dilemma and enigma we face.  When safely ensconced in our self-space, each of us tends to restore his/her self-familiarity-space of separateness. Sometimes, we remain 'stuck' in our sense of injury, perhaps blaming the other for our pains or experiencing them as a stranger or even monster. Alternatively, although flooded by painful feelings of strangeness, we may nonetheless choose to reconcile and renovate the basic love relations we enjoyed. But for a 'tango' to ensue, both partners must be able to renew their communication, allow mutual love refueling, and forgo their injuries. Whenever our child spontaneously approaches us to refuel love, we are delighted. The small child does not wait for his parent to decipher his need for refueling, he is going to get it! After a while, he or she resumes their activity, confident they can return for more refueling. When an adult dares express his (or her) normal desire to be refueled by love, he is often inhibited, fears being emotionally vulnerable, perhaps  even mocked or shamed, as he waits for his partner to decipher his needs and 'prove' his love. What a paradox! If only we could let the hidden child within us show us how simple it is to refuel our love! It is so challenging to 'immune' the happiness and love and preserve it, so easy to destroy it, due to an intolerance of otherness. The art of couplehood relies on an incessant process of refining and taming, fueling and refueling, re-joining in partnership and separating from jointness. I differentiate between healthy and pathological narcissism by the capacity (or lack thereof) to preserve, restore and re-stabilise one's sense of one's familiarity self, as well as to restore the familiarity of one's partners and of one's relationships with them. But how does narcissism work? I imagine that most of us may easily admit how much we are attracted to the familiar and appreciate it, and conversely, being alerted to, and tending to resist that which we find strange. We generally consider narcissistic injuries, on their pejorative significance or pathological side. However, in Enigma, I try to illuminate these emotional reactions in a new light of psychic health--which I refer to as healthy narcissism. The baby preserves his self-space familiarity and separateness, while cathecting some figures (e.g., mother, father, siblings) as familiar non-selves with whom he is joining in a virtual shared space.How do I view the similarities between biological and narcissistic/emotional immune and auto-immune systems, you may wonder. The biological immunologist defines the job of the immune system as that of safeguarding the code of the human cell's protein as familiar and constant, and of identifying foreign invaders with a different protein code (which may endanger the integrity of body cells) so as to block them (Dannenberg & Shoenfeld 1991). The concept of autoimmunity is regarded as the inability of the immune system to distinguish between self and non-self (George, Levy & Shoenfeld, 1996). As an analyst, I was stimulated for many years to investigate the contribution of narcissism to the child's emotional development. One of my main theoretical contributions in Enigma pertains to my considering narcissism as an innate emotional immune system mobilised for preserving the familiar sense of the self, that is, the code of the human self-space as part of the familiar and constant self (Solan, 1988, 1999). Narcissism operates through the principles of attraction to the familiar and the resisting of any alien stimuli, seen as strangeness, non-self or otherness, all of which challenge the familiarity of the self. Narcissism is also programmed, in my view, to befriend hints of familiarity concealed in the non-self otherness and in strangeness, and subsequently to 'load' it as familiar non-self (like with parents, spouses, friends etc.). In my book, I have tried also to take a fresh look at the functioning of the ego, including the important distinction between the regulatory characteristics of mechanisms of adaptation and defence.Each of us contains within himself the sum of layers of memory traces composed of narratives from significant relations dating from different stages of development, some of them conscious and others unconscious, some constructive, and others destructive. Ever since I've conceptualised how healthy narcissism operates, the proposed differences between the ego's adaptation and defence  mechanisms, and jointness-separateness object relations, my clinical work has improved greatly. I've realised that my interventions are better able to touch upon my patients' conscious and unconscious emotional experiences and feelings. Especially, such interpretations can help them acknowledge and befriend their true self, disclose their hidden positive childhood narrative, which may have been blocked by resonations of destructive memory traces that interfered with their love relations and impeded their spontaneous happiness. Moreover, their sense of separateness, their decision-making process regarding their work, and the reconciliation with the otherness of their dear ones, as well as their participation in the art of couplehood, has noticeably improved.     Following this introduction to The Enigma of Childhood, I invite the reader to discover for him or herself the secret door provided in my book, which may lead to the solving of some of the enigma, perhaps by acknowledging that the capacity to be happy and loved depends, inter alia, on our ability to tolerate the otherness of our partners.

By Sharon Travel with an open heart: With this touching collection of photos and essays, Hilary Emberton reminds us that travel for discovery, for learning, for sharing moments with others whose lives are radically different in culture from our own is still possible. With great sensitivity and a wonderful ability to express in words emotions and experiences that are both personal and universal, Hilary shows an appreciation for the world as a true "traveler," rather than as a "tourist." By sharing just glimpses of her world-wide experiences, she transports the reader with her touching descriptions, sometimes poignant, often amusing. When I received my copy, I sat down and read AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL from cover to cover. From Mongolia to Malaysia, from Tibet to South Africa, from Russia to Peru...in no particular order, each essay is a slice of life; for this reason, it's a book the reader can go back to, pick up and open at random for reflection or inspiration. This book first came to me as a gift...and what a gift it is! As a seasoned traveler myself, now living in Panama, I highly recommend this gem!

This is a book written by someone who knows what it means to really travel and be engaged in life every day and every moment. The photographs are some of the most spectacular ones I have ever seen, and the writing is a succinct and, at the same time, full-blooded capture of each place's essence. Hilary Emberton is a world traveler in the best of senses, and her writing, as well as her photos, can teach one much about adopting an attitude towards life that transcends the mundane and doesn't sway from what's truly important, and what we all have in common.It's a book to which one comes back now and again, to release oneself from the noise and chaos of our postmodern world.

Hilary Emberton is more that a competent photographer--her choice of a single photo to represent an entire country is both compelling and affectionate. The same is true of the little stories she tells about each place she visits. She sincerely thinks the best of places and people.

No tengo otra palabra para definir esta maravillosa historia. Tu peor error, Materia oscura, es el primero de dos libros. Sheila nos adentra en este thriller de suspenso romántico, con una novela que te mantiene en vilo hasta el final con su característico estilo de narrar, no podía ni respirar, jejejeje. Personajes muy bien perfilados, de carácter y una carga emocional a cuestas que influye mucho en sus acciones; Natalia, Sebastian y Damian lo tendrán muy dificil. No voy a develar mucho de la trama solo diré que es creíble, emotiva y dramática. Desde el título que ya nos sitúa en un enorme problema hasta la bella portada, es una novela que recomiendo como una de las mejores que he leído en mucho tiempo.

En Shock By Ode O Este es en el estado en que uno queda luego de leer un libro tan intenso como Tu Peor Error de Sheila Sheeran.Es imposible poder describir todo lo que ese libro es, de principio a fin es pura intensidad, sientes que es una continua montaña rusa de emociones, cada palabra escrita tiene un trasfondo, donde debes cuidar cada detalle que lees.La narración omnisciente permite no perder pisada de cada personaje, pero si soy sincera, creo que está tan genialmente escrito, que sientes que es primera persona ya que vives cada personaje como si cada uno te contara su cuota de culpa dentro de la historia.Lo más sorprendente de leer un libro de esta magnitud es que no sabes cómo clasificarlo. Efectivamente, partimos del principio que es un THRILLER en toda regla, y nadie puede discutírmelo (podemos irnos hasta el concepto base del género y a los ejemplos que hasta puedo citar), pero también puede ser catalogado como de romances con algunos toques (para nada burdos) eróticos.Lo que sí puedo afirmar:1) Es que es una novela pensada y re-pensada, demuestra el sumo cuidado que tuvo la escritora para documentarse (tema que luego debemos hablar en privado la escritora y yo porque estoy comiéndome las uñas por la información que debió investigar, y que yo quiero curiosear).2) Que los personajes no fueron salidos del aire (aunque suene fea la expresión), sino que sin importar si era principal, antagónico, secundario o de relleno, cada uno estuvo muy bien construido.3) Y que la historia se va desarrollando de manera tal que todo tienen un porqué y un significado.Sin que quede duda luego de toda la basta parafernalia de palabras que usé para describir mi opinión luego de leer el libro, simplemente puedo cerrar diciendo he LO RECOMIENDO, es un libro de suspense que puede recordarte a escritores como Frederick Forsyth (gracias a quien le debo mi nombre), Dan Brown o un John Grisham. Y si las editoriales se ponen las pilas, Sheila tú podrías llegar a ese nivel.

Hacía mucho tiempo q no leía una novela tan excelente, con una mezcla de romance, intriga, suspenso, acción, etc, etc, etc. Soy fanática de la autora desde q leí su primera novela y cuando pienso q no puede ponerse mejor S Sheeran me hace saber q me equivoco! "Materia Oscura" es simple y sencillamente exepcional! Me encanta como la autora forma a sus personajes, q bien podrían ser de la vida real, con defectos y virtudes, aciertos y equivocaciones. La recomiendo 100%! Espero q "66 Lunas" no tarde, pq no sé q va a ser de mi vida sin los Roa!!!!
