For someone like myself who has never experimented with ayahuasca before By Jonas Fernandes For someone like myself who has never experimented with ayahuasca before, this is a fascinating recount of the author’s journey into self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment through this powerful medicine. The story is so rich in sensory details that it kept giving me goose bumps. It is almost as if you were living the events and revelations as you read about them. It definitely has motivated me to similarly uncover all the masks that we put on and get to the core of my soul, what really matters, the truth... The art is phenomenal and it really helped me transport my mind to that same scenario and emotions, as well as the supernatural world inside and outside of the author’s mind. I am very intrigued by some of the revelations that the author chose not to share in the book. Did he find the mystery of life? Or a secret about the higher powers manifested only to him? What is it?? This is a great read for its deep darkness and equally deep light, thrilling adventure into spirits and self. Thanks for sharing your revelations with the world!!

During World War II there was a serious housing shortage in Santa Monica, a sunny, laid-back beach city in southern California. In 1944,my family moved there from a small town in Rhode Island after my artist father, Eric Jones, was hired to paint and beautify the historic carousel which dwelled in a shabby, run-down building known as the Old Hippodrome. A small apartment above the carousel in this domed Byzantine styled structure would be my home for all my teenage years. The book is a collection of stories based on actual events from this postwar era from 1944-1951. The narrator of the stories is a young version of myself. My life changed as soon as I stepped on the sands of Muscle Beach and saw beautifully tanned young volleyball players, gymnasts, bodybuilders and surfers. I felt like a pallid newcomer from the backwoods in my regulation gym shorts and wondered if I would ever fit in. Within months I overcame my fear of the ocean and attempted the ancient Hawaiian sport of surfing. My teenage sister and I became members of the Manoa Surfboard Ballet. We went moonlight fishing for grunion; danced to the music of Spade Cooley's Western Swing Band; ran 'The Kiddie Rides', selling tickets and operating the rides by ourselves. I learned the secret to catching the brass ring when I worked as ' the ring girl'. Although, living on the Pier was not the best neighborhood, it was in the middle of all the excitement, contests and festivals during this postwar era. This book describes it well.

Mcbee I really enjojed this book as I believe Ms. Stephenson not only described the happenings of this time but captured the flavor of the life around the Santa Monica beach and pier of the 1940 and 1950s. I was born and raised in Santa Monica and spent most of my time at the volleyball courts and beach next to the pier. Yet one does not have to be from this area or time to enjoy the narrative describing growing up in the post WWII years. I would heartily recommend this as an enjoyable and worthwhile read.David McBee golfdoc@artelco.com

An excellent accounting of the years during WWII in Santa Monica By Mamazabakaka An excellent accounting of the years during WWII in Santa Monica, California. The author and her family lived in the apartments above the famous Santa Monica Pier Carousel and she was a witness to and participant in the life of a vibrant little town on the edge of America during some exciting times. Her point of view as a child and young woman will amuse and transport you. I really, thoroughly enjoyed reading this first-person account.

William James published his short, highly-influential book "Pragmatism" which consisted of a series of eight lectures he had delivered in Boston and New York City. For the most part, "Pragmatism" was written in a popular, accessible style. James explained the pragmatic method as a means of resolving the tensions between religion and science, or, as he put it, the differences between "tough minded" and "tender minded" approaches to philosophy. James developed pragmatism as a method in which metaphysical disputes were to be resolved by testing their practical consequences in life. If the disagreement had no practical consequences, for James, the question was probably misformed or idle.The most controversial part of "Pragmatism" consisted of its theory of truth which James developed in Chapter VI. He argued that the truth of an idea was the use that could be made of it, or as he put it in the Preface of his book, "The Meaning of Truth," "true ideas are those that we can assimilate, validate, corroborate, and verify. False ideas are those that we cannot." James's theory of truth appeared counter-intuitive to many people, philosophers and laymen alike, who believed that a true idea (or true statement, claim, proposition, etc) was one that corresponded in some sense to reality.In order to explain further his view of truth and to respond to criticism, James gathered together thirteen of his published lectures and addresses on the subject. He added two additional lectures and a Preface and edited and published them in 1909 as a book "The Meaning of Truth: A Sequel to "Pragmatism". These essays show the development of James's thinking about the nature of truth and attempt to rebut criticism of the theory set forth in "Pragmatism". "The Meaning of Truth" differs in style from its famous predecessor. Where "Pragmatism" is nontechical and written for a lay audience, "The Meaning of Truth" was, for the most part written for professional philosophers. It is much more difficult to read and to understand. Yet it is essential to James's thought.James had another explicit goal in writing "The Meaning of Truth" In addition to developing the pragmatic method, James also was committed to a philosophical view he called radical pluralism which he expounded in his 1907 book, "A Pluralistic Universe." In "Pragmatism", James had said that pragmatism could be accepted as a method without accepting radical pluralism. In the Preface to "The Meaning of Truth", James said that a major advantage to his theory of truth was that it cleared the philosophical ground of absolutes and of fixed, monistic entities behind, in some strange sense, the world of ordinary experience. With the need for absolutes or transcendental theories disposed of, James said, the doctrine of radical empiricism would be supported. That doctrine argued for the contingency, rather than necessity, of much of experience, and held further that the only things that philosophers could sensibly discuss were matters definable in terms drawn from experience.The essays in "The Meaning of Truth" were originally written between 1884 and 1909, and in them James foreshadows, explains, defends, and subtly modifies the theory articulated in "Pragmatism". The most single section of the book is the Preface which James composed for the volume to explain where he had been in the theory of truth and where he was going. I will comment briefly on some of the key essays.The first essay, "The Function of Cognition," written in 1884, explains the theory of truth in psychological terms -- some critics argue that throughout his writings James tended to confuse psychological with philosophical issues. Of the other essays in the book predating "Pragmatism", I found "The Essence of Humanism" written in 1905 most useful in stating James's position.James's most sustained attempt to rebut critics of his doctrine was in his essay "The Pragmatist Account of Truth and its Misunderstanders" published in 1908. In this essay, James set forth what he deemed to be eight misunderstandings of pragmatism and struggled to answer these misunderstandings. This essay is essential in considering James's views. The essay "Two English Critics", first written for the volume attempts to answer Bertrand Russell's criticisms of James, and in the concluding "Dialogue" James tries to show how the pragmatic theory answers questions about which we have no experience -- say back in the early days of the earth before human beings appeared.James's theory of truth is difficult and slippery, and he seems to change it subtly in response to critics. Several objections to the doctrine note its idealistic character in that James's theory seems to make true statements independent of the existence of reality -- of physical objects, say, existing independent of the knower. In "The Pragmatist Account of Truth", in the subsequent essays, and in the Preface, James tries to answer this objection by insisting that his pragmatism is committed to metaphysical realism -- to the existence of objects outside the knower and that his theory of truth works because it is about these objects. (In "A Pluralistic Universe", James's metaphysics seems more idealist in character.) Some readers take this response as qualifying James's pragmatic theory or even as giving away the game as it imparts a realist component to his epistemology that is over and above his theory of truth as what works, consistent with other beliefs. Ultimately it seems to me that James wants to have it both ways between a representational theory and a pragmatic theory.Pragmatism as developed by James, Peirce, Dewey, and others is, in many forms and varieties, still much alive today. James laid the foundation for the doctrine in "Pragmatism" and in "The Meaning of Truth" but he did not say the last word. The former book is a grand introduction to the subject while the latter book is detailed and technical. Taken together the works will help the reader think about pragmatism and to understand a distinctive American contribution to philosophy.Robin Friedman

Operations went on in both conflicts without heed for the expected results and in the process effectively isolated the vast bulk of soldiers from the populations that they were trying to defend. Both conflicts were severely underestimated by our leaders, both civilian and military. The VietNam veteran suffered the price of his unpopular war and now the Afghanistan and Iraq veteran is coming home to a growing public indifference to their sacrifices.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Read for all Veterans, both Vietnam and current operations By Jimmie Henry I really appreciated how the book is designed. DR. Zoesch is a true American hero in my opinion. Serving in 2 wars as a combat arms soldier, and a medical Doctor, he has truly made the sacrifice. The Author has written a book that puts the reader there. As I read the book, I could visualize CPT Zoesch flying that little plane in the middle of combat operations while the other pilot slept. Reading the story of where he fell out of a Huey Helicopter, and just barely managing to save himself by grabbing onto the skid gave me goose bumps. I thought about that story for days after. As a Doctor serving in Afghanistan, his verbage puts the reader in the ER/OR while he uses his skills to save american Soldier's lives who are shot, burned, and blown up. This chapter is truly inspiring and makes me proud to be an American. The story about the little Afghanistan boy whose life he saved is also inspiring and heartbreaking. Overall a great read and well worth the price.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My thoughts By Wake I spent 23 years in the military and served in Viet Nam 1967-1968 in the USAF. The first positive thing that struck me in DR Zoesch's book is the format used to go from one period in Viet Nam, to a later period in Afghanistan and then back to Viet Nam. It helped to weave the life and experiences of the author into a cohesive mini.bio. While I never served in SW Asia, this book revealed the trials and tribulations of the medical personnel in Afghanistan which were very similar to medical units in Viet Nam. Who can forget the riflestorage problems on USAF bases, the mamasans, the malaria pills and their side effects, soda and beer can shingles on their homes, "burning the feces" once a week and, of course, the unfounded resentment held by many of the regulars against our Guardsmen and Reservists? Moshman This book held my interest the entire time and Ifound the format of alternating chapters of his Vietnam experience and Afghanistan deployment conducive toward appreciating the differences and similarities in both conflicts. I had served personally with Dr. Zoesch in Afghanistan 2004-2005 and still remain in contact with him. I learned some history, laughed some, but after 41 years on and off in 3 different services, the Marine Corps, Navy, and the last 10 years in the Army Reserve, feel justified in thinking, that we as a nation, find it too easy to go to war.

My subsequent dabbling in poetry was heavily influenced, in the beginnings, by Bécquer, and still today he remains one of my favorite poets alongside Pablo Neruda and Jorge Luis Borges.I really like Rima X, incorrectly labeled in this edition as IX. It is about the strange vibrations in the air when Cupid is passing by. Rima XII is my favorite of them all. It is about a young woman who has green eyes and would like them in a different color. The poet tries to convince her of how pretty they are, mentioning all the examples in nature of the color green. Unfortunately, this rhyme (rima) is incomplete in this collection.I happily rediscovered rima XXVI. How truthful those words![...]Voces que hacen correr cuatro poetasQue en invierno se embozan con la lira;¡Ladridos de los perros a la luna!Tú sabes y yo sé que en esta vidaCon genio es muy contado el que la escribe,Y con oro cualquiera hace poesía.I also rediscovered and loved rima XC, which also refers to being hit by Cupid.Rimas by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer encompasses a variety of topics ranging from love in all its manifestations, disillusionment, and religious and spiritual epiphanies.I got this collection through Kindle, but it’s in the public domain; it is marred by misspellings but they don't manage to decrease the impact of Bécquer's amazing work.

Iglesias Sin duda se puede decir que Bécquer constituye un hito de la poesía romántica española, un ícono del amor, correspondido o no. Las Rimas son muy conocidas en la lengua española, inlusive algunas se memorizan desde la escuela. Sin embargo eso no disminuye su belleza y, releyéndolas, siempre encontramos una frase, una metáfora, que nos deleita.

I want to go to Athens. To my nervousness, I thought of a way how can I somehow be ready about my trip and I saw this book. One week before my trip, I read this book. Guess what, I really had an amazing trip there! I even brought this book with me in my journey. This book taught me the good regions in Athens, where I can eat there, what I must try there and of course, where to party! I was not lonely there because I have this guide that can help me throughout the trip. A good guide indeed!

I’ve had a long but sceptical interest in the “Bloomsbury Group”, recognising their intellects and creativity – from Virginia Woolf to Vanessa Bell, Maynard Keynes and all the others, as well as some of their descendants now living. But I’ve also been suspicious of their seeming self-obsession. And then there’s “Bunny” Garnett, oddly absent from the record apart from in “Deceived with Kindness” where he gets a bad press. Now we have a really readable, fast moving, and also scholarly, account of this man who wrote some really original novels (try “Lady into Fox” if you don’t know it), memoirs and was in his life a conscientious objector, intelligence officer, supporter of Indian nationalism (and could have been hung had he been caught). Fascinating, creative, and always physical, building, walking, flying, having lots of sex (certainly attractive to look at – the picture of him climbing into the window on the cover!). He comes over as so strongly self-directed and “honest” (in that painful self-conscious Bloomsbury way) that he causes horrible hurt to his first wife, Ray Marshall, while suffering terrible jealousy with his second wife, the artist Angelica Garnett. This book is a must read for vacation reading. And it is beautifully written and not a word too long. I wanted to know more!

Rau I’d read a few articles about the Bloomsbury group and remained curious about how various people and events fit together. Sarah Knights has satisfied my curiosity—and more--with her wonderfully engaging and researched biography of David Garnett, known to all as Bunny. As the title suggests, Garnett became an outsider to the Bloomsbury group, but remained a central figure to many of its adherents. To him, people mattered. The book shows the full human side of Garnett and many of the people he was drawn to, and those drawn to him, including H.G. Wells and Joseph Conrad, among many others.There is so much to like about Bloomsbury’s Outsider. I especially appreciated the many details discovered by Knights in Garnett’s correspondence and through interviews with people who knew him. And those details are placed in the larger context of the changing society of Britain. This is a book about a totally fascinating man, his times, and his influence on both literary and social life in UK in the 1920s through the 1960s. For all readers anxious to know more about the Bloomsbury group and British social and literary history, Bloomsbury’s Outsider is a must read.
