P. T. Barnum ( 1810 –1891) Anarrates his early history as Clerk, Merchant and Editor, and his later career a Showman. Barnum is the greatest showman of all time, the American from Bethel, Connecticut, whose eccentricities and oblique, cynical approach to humanity transformed entertainment into a big, incredibly profitable business. As bachelor, husband (twice), father, and grandfather, Barnum comes to life in these crowded pages, an exceedingly interesting and human man. Here, too, are New York City in all its nineteenth-century color the London of Queen Victoria, and the Paris of Napoleon III. In 1842, Barnum opened the first of the great "museums" of curiosities and freaks, adding immeasurably to the gaiety of New York life. He exhibited the tiny Charles Sherwood Stratton so successfully that he became, as "General Tom Thumb," a world-famous figure. In 1850, Barnum imported Jenny Lind for a concert tour beginning at Castle Garden (later the Aquarium in Battery Park), which more than prefigured the later exploits of S. Hurok. When past sixty, Barnum opened in Brooklyn "The Greatest Show on Earth," the first great American traveling circus. In a large majority of cases human life is a struggle, a conflict with opposing obstacles prolonged often through years of difficulties, which test the strength and try the character; too often, unfortunately, prolonged to the end. The history of such a life, candidly and honestly written and portrayed in fitting language, has all the interest of romance—is, in fact, a romance of real life, and ought to abound in lessons of practical wisdom for those who are to follow along the pathway which, though beaten by the countless feet of those who have gone before, is always rugged to every new wayfarer. Such a work is this autobiography of P. T. Barnum, so well known on both sides of the Atlantic for the personal vicissitudes through which he has passed during a long public career, for his indefatigable energy of character, and for his triumph over obstacles and misfortunes which might well have appalled and discouraged even the sternest battler in " the struggle for existence." Retired from the dust of the arena, and resting upon his laurels, he has spent the leisure moments of a green and vigorous old age in recalling the past with its checkered experiences, and drawing from it such lessons as will amuse, interest, and benefit those who are to follow in his footsteps. There is a charm about autobiography which is not possessed by any other branch of literature. A peculiar interest always attaches to any record of an actual, personal life—a kindred feeling which constitutes the infinite superiority of reality over romance—and in proportion as the experiences of the autobiographer are varied, and the relations in which he places himself to the reader honest and candid, is the interest much or little, and the impressions permanent or transient. Of the various vicissitudes through which Mr. Barnum has passed the whole world more or less knows, and to show how perfectly natural and confidential he is with the public, quoting from the preface what he himself says of his work. "It is the matured and leisurely review of almost half a century of work and struggle and final success, in spite of fraud and fire—the story of which is blended with amusing anecdotes, funny passages, felicitous jokes, captivating narratives, novel experiences, and remarkable interviews—the sunny and sombre so intermingled as not only to entertain, but convey useful lessons to all classes of readers." The delicious egotism which pervades this passage, and which constitutes half the charm of personal revelations, run through the whole work, and more especially is it characterized by Mr. Barnum's strongly marked and thoroughly American individuality. By Dave Bross Good autobiography.Explains a lot of the current views about Barnum's tricks in the sense that things were viewed very differently in that era. Practical jokes specifically...or so he claims.Were they really better sports then about being tricked for entertainment?Discounting that it is an autobiography I think it's an excellent overview of that time in history.

I had bought this book because I have the original from 1879 and didn't want to damage the pages by reading it. So I thought it still being in print I'll buy the newer version and read that. Come to find out that the new version has been severely shortened and so much of P.T.Barnums words that I wanted to read was left out. I won't waste my time with the new version.

About the Author John Hamwee has been a practicing acupuncturist for over 20 years and is a teacher of acupuncture and Zero Balancing. He previously worked as a Senior Lecturer in Systems at The Open University, UK, for whom he wrote numerous textbooks. The adventures of Tony Slater are varied and entertaining. I don't think it actually matters where Tony is or what he is doing, his take on life and writing style turns all of his mini-adventures into a hysterical journey.

Now I can't wait as I know there's a 3rd and 4th on the way! Tony writes like Bill Bryson only funnier and more honest, he is definitely not afraid of people having a laugh at his expense ~ we are privy to his thoughts, his craziness and his love of adventure. I recommend Tony's books to everyone I come in contact with, we can all do with a little escapism (and humour!) and this book provides it in copious quantities.You wont be able to put it down and you will be wanting more!

Given that I'm old enough to be Tony' s mom and American, it's written for folks of all types. It brought back memories of my English friends and our antics.It is also a fabulous travel log. If your planning a trip to Thailand or your semi-adult child is, this is a MUST READ. He provides detailed, life saving information, especially for divers.He's a fun, entertaining, informative read. Like spending time with a really good friend, without having to actually pack.I will read his first book, The Bear Ate My Pants (pretty sure that's the correct title). I am also really looking forward to his account of his trip with Gillian (sister) and Roo (friend) in Australia!Don't leave us hanging, Tony! I've always wanted to visit Australia, but my traveling days are done, so I am going to live vicariously through you. It seems safer.

One of those moments – if you're old enough – that you remember what you were doing at the time you heard about the event . As with the news about Kennedy's assassination.Patrick Bishop's masterful, short book, Churchill's Funeral: The End of Empire, describes the images of that day so vividly that I'm uncertain whether the black and white flickering TV images I seem to see are real memories of my own or pictures conjured up by author Patrick Bishop, who excels at his twin crafts of journalism and history writing.Bishop's many excellent books about World War Two mean he had, prior to writing this book, already immersed himself in a period where Churchill was at his peak and that is apparent in this work.He sets the scene for the funeral in an age that seemed intent on making a conscious break with the world that Churchill had been born into and whose characteristics – belief in British superiority and an incontestable right to rule over the quarter of the planet constituting the British Empire he embodied. It was a time when some of that Churchillian world view was being rudely challenged by a cultural revolution led by the likes of The Rolling Stones and the Monty Python crew who questioned and mocked the very way Britons perceived their own history and the upheavals, including World Wars One and Two their parents and grandparents (and Churchill) had lived through.Bishop's book doesn't claim to be anywhere approaching a complete history of Churchill's life . But it provides a compact summary of some of the most important events of the man's life and shows how perilously close Churchill came to NOT becoming prime minister and Britain's wartime leader. The alternatives to Churchill would almost certainly, following the surrender of their allies in Europe and faced by an alliance between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, tried to make a deal with Hitler.But by using a combination of his savvy political poker skills, genius at using the spoken and written English word, a supreme conviction that his reading of history was correct, and a large measure of luck, Churchill did become prime minister.Bishop shows how Churchill probably was what Churchill himself believed he was – the man whose already long , intense, adventurous, turbulent life had been a preparation to lead Britain in that particular and most dangerous slice of its history whose outcome would determine the fate of the entire world.Even if that world was changing in ways that probably disappointed Churchill – especially the near eradication of the Empire he so cherished - Bishop describes the momentous effect around the British and wider world of the news that Churchill was gone.Even in a Britain that was embarking on a period of, often cynical and self-doubting, reappraisal of its own worth and values, Bishop's book shows the entire country was gripped by the death of Churchill and reflected on what his life meant to them.The massive attention and reverence Churchill's funeral provoked demonstrated that despite his flaws, Churchill embodied those virtues of courage, patriotism, action, defense of decency ,and love of liberty, that enabled him to rally Britons fighting vastly outnumbered against tyranny during the war. Churchill's spirit remains inspiring today in a world where his values - western notions of democracy and decency - are under assault by vicious, revamped versions of the evil systems he fought against.

On the one hand, it provided a nice factual reminder of Churchill's life and death in this 50th anniversary year of his passing. On the other hand, it also offered an interesting analysis of what Churchill believed he and the British Empire were fighting for, and how much of what he hoped to preserve was made impossible by the very act of war, which seldom preserves anything and typically offers strange and different results when the treaties are signed and the mess cleaned up -- a point the author clearly makes. Overall, Mr. Bishop has written a clear, concise appraisal of one of the 20th century's more interesting characters, and I wouldn't have minded a few more pages if he'd cared to write them.
