Prepare for your nursing exams By Buckeyegirl This question bank is a perfect companion for the Bates Physical Examination Book as well as great for giving you situational advice. I thought the chapter on Behavior and Mental Status was especially helpful for knowing how to accurately work with the patients that are harder to deal with. The fact that the book provided situational questions makes me more confident in not just acing the test but to be able to be more prepared to work in real life situations. This is a very useful guide to help you study for your nursing exams and feel prepared for other tests.

I like the large testbank of questions included in this and once your done with the book you can start all over again. I use to awkwardly struggle with practice interviewing and health history and I feel I have a good handle on it now. I have practiced taking "health histories" on a few family and friends and it's getting easier after using this book and applying the information and test questions to practical uses.

Excerpt from Neuralgia and the Diseases That Resemble ItI believe it will not be disputed that there was considerable need for an English treatise dealing rather fully with the subject of Neuralgia, and therefore I hope that the profession will be willing to give me a hearing. The present work, moreover, does not profess to be a mere compilation of standard authorities corrected down to the present time, but puts forward a substantially new view of the subject - at least, a view that has been only briefly sketched by me in an article that appeared, three years ago, in Reynolds's "System of Medicine." My principal object, in writing this volume, was to vindicate for Neuralgia that distinct and independent position which I have long been convinced it really holds, and to prove that it is not a mere offshoot of the Gouty or Rheumatic diatheses, still less a mere chance symptom of a score of different and incongruous diseases. In order to set the diagnosis of true Neuralgia from its counterfeits in the clearest light, it seemed advisable to draw separate pictures of each of the latter (at least of as many as are of real importance) and present them separately, as a kind of gallery of spurious neuralgias, and this I have done in the second part of the volume. No one who had not tried to do it would imagine how difficult this latter kind of work is. It was necessary for the sketches to be very brief (unless my book was to become unmanageably large), and yet to be as truthfully characteristic as possible; and it was necessary also that only those diseases which so much resemble Neuralgia as practically to lead medical men astray in diagnosis, should be dealt with. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Herb and Harry. A dichotomy he leaves behind for the rest of us to puzzle over. As Herb he was a son, a brother, A Bar Mitzvah boy, a High School track star, a student, a Marine, an aspiring actor, and a loyal and generous friend. As Harry he was a porn icon, and international celebrity, a darling of the TV talk show circuit, a victim of judicial overreach, a convicted felon, a finally-absolved and victorious defendant, a drunk, a drug addict, a 12 step champion, a converted Christian, a successful real estate executive, a scratch golfer, a semi-pro skier, a loving husband, and, at long last, a happy man. Before the media circus that surrounded the exhibition, and subsequent prosecution of the movie known as Deep throat, Herb was a good friend of mine. This book is a personal remembrance of an old friend, and the only actor ever prosecuted by the United States Justice Department for simply doing his job. I'm quite happy with the way this story turned out, and I'm quite certain that Herb would feel the same. I have included almost a hundred color and black and white photographs of Harry Reems, and of Times Square in its pre-clean up days during the 1970's. This book is a love letter to an old and dear friend, and to the era and environment that spawned his legend.

A Touching Tribute by One Adult Industry Legend to Another By geert claeys My earliest memory of Golden Age hardcore he-man Harry Reems stems from somewhere back in the still budding Eighties. Our (Belgian) household was still a few years removed from acquiring its first VCR, mighty pricey back in the day, but the local video store would offer cumbersome play-only devices described as “movie boxes” (anyone else remember those contraptions ?) for an affordable weekend rental, throwing in a couple of complimentary tapes as part of the deal. As with any VHS renter, one of the flicks I picked was of an adult nature, in my case the 1974 carnal classic Sometime Sweet Susan. So it came to pass that my mom (!!!) and I - aged about 15 or 16 at the time - sat down on a Saturday night to sample our first flavor of in-house intimate entertainment. Mom, God rest her weary soul, was a desperate housewife well before TV made the term fashionable, possessed of a tiger’s temperament trapped in the starting to sag shell of a stay at home spouse and mother of eleven, eight sons versus three daughters. The bloom of youth prematurely trampled by daily drudgery, Lord knows she could stand a salacious vicarious thrill to help her make it through the night. Turned out titular Susan, the pic’s perky protagonist, was a particularly troubled young lady with a split personality (the proverbial good girl/bad girl) in dire need of psychiatric support. Enter Harry Reems as the Good Doctor (I didn’t see Deep Throat until several years after) rushing in aid of our ailing heroine. I swear you could have heard both mom and me gasp at his first appearance. Although an amiable actor, certainly by adult standards (a frame of reference I was still unfamiliar with at the time), it was his look that did it for us. Yes, we really were that shallow ! A fine torso with magnificent muscle definition, yet light years removed from the pumped physique of the next decade’s gym bunnies, covered with a thick layer of fur as our favorite tell-tale trademark of virility. Mom liked ‘em hirsute and, then still unbeknownst to her, so did the youngest of her boys…The Sixties’ sexual revolution had produced an unprecedented permissiveness on worldwide cinema screens by the time strapping young Herbert Streicher, a nice Jewish kid from Brooklyn, figured these newfangled fornication flicks were a great way to make ends meet while waiting for his big break in thespian territory. The ultimately short-lived “Porno Chic” phenomenon took sex films out of their storefront ghetto and moved them into fancy first run theaters. For a brief shining moment, it seemed as if carnal cinema had come of age and had permanently taken up residence in the major league to the approval of adventurous audiences everywhere. In such climate, illusory though it was to prove, it was not unthinkable for a struggling actor to seriously consider the option of taking it off and putting it in for pictorial posterity without a care as to how or whether this might affect his future chances. After all, he wasn’t doing anything that didn’t come naturally to most people. At worst, should fornication films prove but a fleeting fad, they would probably sink without a trace leaving no one the wiser, right ? Unfortunately for Herb, who had been trying on professional monikers with “Tim Long” the most persistent until “Harry Reems” finally stuck, an unassuming little XXX flick was to decide otherwise…Gerard Damiano’s groundbreaking Deep Throat and its legal hassles that were to kill off the legit careers of all involved, headed by Reems serving as primary scapegoat, have been extensively covered by Bailey and Barbato’s essential 2005 documentary Inside Deep Throat. Shaun Costello, a fellow performer from the industry’s infancy who would graduate to feature filmmaking while upholding an astonishing “Real World” front, was there at crucial junctures in Harry’s life. Now he lifts the veil on the man whose very image was to become synonymous with the prototypical Seventies porno stud : a lean mean fornicatin’ machine with the trademark handlebar mustache. A close buddy and ally since their days in the trenches, Costello chronologically charts the rise and fall of the reluctant adult industry icon in an instantly ingratiating, flab-free style giving you the how’s and why’s without resorting to amateur analysis or purple prose. Which is not to say that he merely records the bad boy shenanigans he shared with his subject, as evidenced by an astonishingly astute account of an acid trip that reads like something akin to Beat poetry.Carnal cognoscenti are well aware that Reems starred in Costello’s fledgling filmmaking effort, the sexually explicit Vietnam vet on a rampage flick Forced Entry, and the exhaustive chapter on that film’s genesis alone provides enough reason to pick up a copy of the book. Already associated with congenially comedic capers through Throat and other farces of its ilk taking their cues from burlesque theater, the actor gave one of his most atypical performances as the deeply disturbed gas station attendant whose twisted views on morality (punishing women for making themselves sexually available to all and sundry) blow up in his face when the tables are turned in deliciously ironic fashion. Although Reems was to subsequently feign shock at the movie’s heady mix of real sex and phoney violence in his 1975 autobiography Here Comes Harry Reems !, it remains one of his standout achievements, providing a strong glimpse of what might have been had mainstream movies embraced rather than rebuffed him. Costello chronicles Reems’s fall from grace in harrowing detail, deftly side-stepping sensationalism at every turn. The actor’s own words quoted from various credited sources paper over the periods when the longtime pals’ paths would diverge. Their fleeting reunion towards decade’s end, when Costello was on his way up with bigger budgets allowing for more ambitious endeavors (the “Warren Evans” era, for those in the know) and Reems was fighting an ever escalating alcohol addiction in order to cope with the mounting frustration over his erotic entrapment, yields one of the book’s most poignant passages guaranteed to break a reader’s heart. Had the author ended right there and then, he would have wound up with one hell of a cautionary tale.Thankfully, life rarely comes as cut ’n dried as your average Movie of the Week would have it and Harry Reems ultimately did have a “life after porn”, finding both God and true love as well as widespread acceptance by his small town community in the unexpectedly enlightened State of Utah. Of all the lavish illustrations, mostly candid movie stills and eye-popping poster art, one stands out in particular. It’s a teeny tiny snap shot of Harry and his wife Jeannie Sterrett at the Inside Deep Throat premiere. Even the usually unsentimental Costello goes on record to concede that this apparently unassuming lady did nothing less than save his life. Moving back to where I started from, my mom never wished ill on anybody, not anybody who didn’t deserve it anyway, certainly no past or present object of her cinematic affection, secret sex fantasies or whatever the case may have been. Knowing her as well as I did, I’ve got a pretty good hunch she would have been tickled pink to learn that this lovely hunk o’man who stirred her loins many decades ago finally found happiness and got to lead a good life before his untimely passing at the age of 65. The book about actors are often written by journalist. This book is very original because it is written by someone who knew the business very well. Shaun Costello was one of the main directors of the of adult movies in the seventies. His first film, the weird and powerful FORCED ENTRY was made with the young Harry Reems. Shaun Costello has a real talent to tell stories about his past.... and about his friend. This book is very moving and funny, and everybody interested in cinema will learn something through it (even people who are not interested in blue movies...). For a long time I wanted to write a book about the mid-1960s and me, it was going to be called 1965, but in the end it proved impossible. The fault was mine. My life, unlike the mid-sixties and that wonderful year, just wasn’t interesting enough to carry the load. Another stumbling block was veracity, not that people would necessarily think I was lying, but I knew they were going to have a hard time believing there’d ever been such a time. The 1950s and 1960s, I mean. There’s always been something mythic about them, and now, as we lose the memories of those who lived them, they threaten to become like lost worlds. Well, history is an art. It’s whatever we say it is. It’s defenseless. So to cheer myself up I wrote this instead.

Ageing a la Alex By Whistlers Mom Most of us have had the sad experience of discovering a wonderful new author and devouring his/her first book and eagerly awaiting the second, only to find that it was the same stuff warmed over. This is the fourth book I've read by this author and I laughed just as hard as I did when I read the first one. Where does she get all of this great material?Being born into one family of nutters and then marrying into a second family of lunatics helps, of course, but strange things (and even stranger people) are everyday events for her. And yet, she's surprisingly normal, really. She's a bit hyper and doesn't care much for food and prowls the house at night like a rat on amphetamines and can't seem to stop decorating and re-decorating but other than that....Some of her stories (or "essays with illustrations" as I call them) concern the day-to-day irritations that plague us all: disgruntled clerks, stubborn elderly parents, even stubborner grown children, snoring husbands, and troublesome pets. She's just so damned funny when she talks about them. On the other hand, the tale of her daughter and son-in-law and the dead deer that they couldn't get rid of is odd. Really, really odd. And having the food plucked off of her plate by a mentally-challenged passer-by in a restaurant is strange. Really, really strange. And I don't even want to THINK about the sand castle in her car and how the moat got there.Warning: This author is British (from Yorkshire, actually, and somebody ought to check the water there) so there's some head-scratching for those of us on this side of the Big Pond. Maybe her references would be even funnier if I recognized the people (celebs? politicians?) she mentions, but I don't let it get me down. A "stone" is 14 pounds and the Brits (who caved in to Metric Mania) still use it to describe weight. I had no trouble figuring out "Tena Lady's Pants." That's their version of our "Depends" and I could have used some while I was reading. If you like to laugh, you shouldn't miss any of this author's hilarious books.

Do not read this book in bed if you have a spouse beside you sleeping as some parts make you laugh out loud uncontrollably.

Immortalised in Christopher Isherwood’s classic novel Mr Norris Changes Trains, Gerald Hamilton was the real-life model for the seedy but beguiling Mr Norris. Isherwood put him on the literary map but he was on other maps already, including those of police forces across Europe, and he was interned in Brixton prison during both world wars as a threat to national security. A Communist agent in the Thirties, Hamilton later drifted to the right and put his faith in the “sacred cause” of absolute monarchy. Despite his somewhat grotesque appearance he had a fruity charm, and he knew everyone from the last Tsar and Guy Burgess to Sir Oswald Mosley and Aleister Crowley, who kept tabs on him for the Special Branch when they shared a flat in Weimar Berlin. Hamilton never lost his impeccable Edwardian manners or his love of wine and food, whatever life threw at him in the way of personal and global crises. “We live in stirring times,” he liked to say, “tea-stirring times.” Written in the 1970s, the late Tom Cullen’s biography of this louche and dubious character was long thought lost, but the manuscript has been traced by Phil Baker, biographer of Dennis Wheatley and Austin Osman Spare, who contributes an introduction, ‘The Importance of Being Gerald’.

About the Author Tom Cullen was born in Oklahoma in 1913 and was a military reporter in WW11. In the 1950s he came back to Europe and settled in Britain. Owing to his Communist sympathies he had his US passport revoked and so was stateless. He was the author of several high profile biographies but because of the threat of libel his biography of Gerald Hamilton could not be published while people mentioned in his biography were still alive. He died in 2001 aged 88.hil Baker has written two books for Dedalus: The Dedalus Book of Absinthe and The Devil is a Gentleman: The Life and Times of Dennis Wheatley. He has also edited and wrote the introduction for Dedalus of The Man Who Was Norris: The Life of Gerald Hamilton. He reviews for a number of papers including The Sunday Times and The Times Literary Supplement. He is the author of a book on Samuel Beckett and biographies of the London artist Austin Osman Spare and the American writer William S. Burroughs. Phil Baker lives in central London.

'The Wickedest Man in the World' By Eleanor In his introduction to this posthumously published biography, editor Phil Baker describes its subject thus: "Despite his physical and perhaps moral ugliness, he had a strange charisma." This immediately piqued my interest and what follows is a jaw-dropping account of what sounds like a thoroughly unpleasant man (albeit one who might make a rather fun dinner guest). Gerald Hamilton, who was the real-life inspiration for Christopher Isherwood's Mr Norris, went through life managing to amass a large number of distinguished (and not-so-distinguished) friends, despite being a liar, a thief, and completely two-faced. This is a man who was guaranteed in any political situation to choose the most repellent side, who fabricated almost every detail of his life, and would sell you down the river for the smallest amount of money. Somehow, despite being permanently bankrupt, he managed to live a life filled with five-star hotels, the finest wines, and the most luxurious of foods, whether in Weimar-era Berlin or London in the swinging sixties. As Cullen remarks in his final chapter "Gerald's ability to hold friends, once he had made them, is little short of astounding.""The Man who was Norris" is a fun read (one interspersed with shudders at his sheer awfulness and something like a grudging admiration for his chutzpah), and cameos from such figures as Aleister Crowley, Colin Wilson, and Oswald and Diana Mosley add to the strange and rackety atmosphere which envelops its subject. Cullen wrote his biography in the seventies, but for legal reasons it was never published and it was only recently that the manuscript was rediscovered and edited by Phil Baker. Cullen obviously relishes describing Hamilton's exploits and he views him from an archly sarcastic perspective. Any statement of Hamilton's needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, and Cullen does not allow himself to be taken in too much by his subject; nevertheless Baker's notes add a further layer of scepticism and you sense that Cullen felt that some stories were too delicious not to repeat.
