Essential Statistics for the Pharmaceutical Sciences is targeted at all those involved in research in pharmacology, pharmacy or other areas of pharmaceutical science; everybody from undergraduate project students to experienced researchers should find the material they need.

This book will guide all those who are not specialist statisticians in using sound statistical principles throughout the whole journey of a research project - designing the work, selecting appropriate statistical methodology and correctly interpreting the results.  It deliberately avoids detailed calculation methodology.  Its key features are friendliness and clarity.   All methods are illustrated with realistic examples from within pharmaceutical science.

This edition now includes expanded coverage of some of the topics included in the first edition and adds some new topics relevant to pharmaceutical research.

  • a clear, accessible introduction to the key statistical techniques used within the pharmaceutical sciences
  • all examples set in relevant pharmaceutical contexts.
  • key points emphasised in summary boxes and warnings of potential abuses in ‘pirate boxes’.
  • supplementary material - full data sets and detailed instructions for carrying out analyses using packages such as SPSS or Minitab – provided at www.ljmu.ac.uk/pbs/rowestats/

An invaluable introduction to statistics for any science student and an essential text for all those involved in pharmaceutical research at whatever level.

By mirasreviews “Essential Statistics for the Pharmaceutical Sciences” by Philip Rowe is aimed at statistics users from the undergraduate level to experienced researchers, not at statisticians. In most cases, it does not explain how to do the math yourself. It explains what statistical procedures should be used for different types of data, why, how to enter the data into the statistical software package of your choice, how to interpret the results, pitfalls, limitations, and alternative procedures. The math itself is only explained when the author feels it would be beneficial to understanding the applications of the procedure. Rowe does not recommend any particular statistical package, but basic instructions are provided for using Minitab and SPSS, with more detailed instructions on the book’s companion web site.Examples are taken from the pharmaceutical sciences, but the topics are applicable to similar disciplines in the biological, biomedical, and chemical sciences. The first six chapters are basic statistical concepts. Chapters 7-13 discuss various types of t-tests, which have broad applications. The remaining chapters address other topics in, generally, increasing order of complexity. These tend to be more specific to the pharmaceutical sciences or biomedical sciences. Explanations are clear, even for those with little background in statistics, though the later chapters take some concentration and re-reading if you’ve never heard of these procedures before. The second edition differs from the first (2007) edition in that the author has added analysis of covariance, logistic regression, measures of agreement, and survival analysis. The book’s first part, chapters 1-2, introduces different types of data (continuous measurement, categorical, ordinal) and different ways of presenting data visually. The second part, chapters 3-16, discusses methods of analyzing interval-scale data (continuous measurement data), including six chapters about t-tests. This includes basic calculations of mean, median, mode, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, confidence intervals, how to identify non-normal distributions, to concepts of skewness, kurtosis, population, sample, and how to cope with a strong skew. Chapters on t-tests cover the two-sample test, how to determine if results are significant, statistical compared to practical significance, calculating sample size and P value, and identifying Type I and Type II errors. Beyond the chapters on t-tests, Rowe discusses correlation testing, regression analysis, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).At this point, the book gets esoteric for readers with no statistical background. The third part, chapters 17-20, addresses nominal-scale data, or data that consists of categorizations rather than measurements, emphasizing that you need a lot of this type of data to be useful. Topics include the goodness of fit chi-square test as an alternative to confidence intervals, the contingency chi-square test, calculation of relative risk, odds ratio, and logistic regression to determine the influences of nominal or interval factors on the outcome. Part 4 addresses ordinal-scale data and is the only part of the book that addresses non-normal distributions of data. All other methods apply to normally distributed data only. A log transform to give the data a normal distribution was discussed in an earlier chapter. Various non-parametric tests are discussed, which transform the data into ranks, that can substitute for parametric tests in cases on non-normal distribution. The book’s fifth part, chapters 23-25, addresses measures of agreement, survival analysis, multiple testing and its inherent problems, and difficulties with data from questionnaires. A few chapters have appendices, but these are located at the end of the chapter, not at the end of the book. For all statistical procedures that are discussed, the author tells the reader what data you need to employ the test, how to do it, and explains when the test should be used and why we do it this way. Philip Rowe is a good writer with a sharp sense of humor, which he does not eschew in his prose. Rowe includes “pirate boxes” throughout the text that explain how to lie with statistics. He points out that these are possible because scientific journals do not require submissions to record the main aspects of their trials in advance. All chapters include a brief, clear summary at the end.

Well written, conceptually-oriented stats text By Zhimbo An important passage to help you understand this book: "The book is aimed at those who have to use statistics, but have no ambition to become statisticians per se. It avoids getting bogged down in calculation methods and focuses instead on crucial issues that surround data generation and analysis".The book is geared towards pharmaceutical sciences, primarily through the concrete examples it uses, and partly through the choice of more advanced topics to cover (e.g., Kaplan-Meier survival analysis is presented, a rarity in most basic stats books).I got this not as a new learner, but as someone who learned some of this quite a while ago and could use an occasional refresher. Mostly, I'm very happy - the text is generally easy to understand and conceptually oriented (rather than focusing on deriving formulas or on the mechanics of calculation), is especially good and pointing out common pitfalls and misconceptions,My biggest - and really only - gripe is the rather light coverage of multiple regression - only about 9 pages of material! (From the text: "This section is really only meant to give a taste of what it does. If you want to use it yourself, it would probably be a good idea to get some advice from a competent statistician.") Mmmm...Okay. Seems like a pretty important topic to skim over (although, as far as a 9 page introduction goes, it's pretty good and easy to follow).Still, it's mostly successful and useful and probably the book the author intended, but it would have to go just a little bit further for me to give it five stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Covers the expected basics plus a number of arguably more advanced topics very well By OnceMore This book is very well written and organized. It's a bit different from the usual introductory statistics books in that it not only covers the expected basic topics such as measurement scales (nominal, ordinal, interval data types), descriptive statistics (e.g., measures of central tendency and variability), and inferential statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, t-tests, analysis of variance, chi-square, correlation) very well, but also topics not typically expected of or usually included in an introductory statistics book but have special relevance to pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, such as analysis of covariance, and survival analysis. The companion website for the book contains relevant data sets and instructions on how to perform the various statistical methods using statistical software packages such as SPSS and Minitab, but not the increasingly popular open source and cost-free R programming language and statistical tool. The use of SPSS and / or Minitab may pose potential challenges to some readers (especially those considering the use of this book for self-guided study), such as access to and / or lack of familiarity with the tool(s), but they should still be able to follow the conceptual discussions without too much difficulty.

By Amazon Customer I've order this book looking for some material in Italian in order to improve my skills in that language (I’m a native speaker). The story is great, the romance between Francesca and Mateo is so intense… the way they fall in love and the way they are forced to split up… There you’ll find also suspense and sensuality in this first part. I really enjoyed, and really encourage to buy this book to the ones that are learning Italian and want to read something different than the boring text books on classroom. Grazie tante Katia!!

Deutsche Lyrik By Mei This book was first published in 1827 and is in the public domain, so you can find it for free as an e-book on several sites on the web. The printed edition has 119 pages. Heinrich Heine lived from 1797 till 1856. This 'Buch der Lieder' is among the first literary works he published. This book contains lyric poems of the romantic area. These poems are still very popular. I will copy one poem from this book below so you can see whether you'll like this book or not. Most of the poems are short, like the one I copied, but some are a few pages long and tell a whole story. I recommend these 'Lieder' to anyone who likes to read German poetry.LXXXVIIDer Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht,Das Leben ist der schwüle Tag.Es dunkelt schon, mich schläfert,Der Tag hat mich müd gemacht.Über mein Bett erhebt sich ein Baum,Drin singt die junge Nachtigall;Sie singt von lauter Liebe,Ich hör es sogar im Traum.

On a linguistic level, Heine is easy to read; add to that the fact that he is supremely important in the history of German lyric poetry, not only for contributing some pieces--like "Die Lorelei"--central to the canon but also because (as even such detractors as Karl Kraus admit) he marks the beginning of a new phase in German poetry which eschews Goethean formality for an easy, more colloquial, familiarity.

Best PDF Ebook Online Kalevala (Finnish Edition), by Elias Lönnrot

This ebook is in Finnish. The Kalevala or The Kalewala is a work of epic poetry written by Elias Lönnrot from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology in nineteenth century. Kalevala on Suomen kansalliseepos. Osan Lönnrot on runoillut itse muodostamaan yhtenäisiä juonikuvioita.

I was sitting near Jesus being taught by his Word. Suddenly, I awoke from the dream and called out to my parents, who were playing pinochle with my godparents in the next room. “Mommy! Daddy! Jesus wants me to be a priest!” “Not my son,” my father replied. The smoke from his cigarette curled up toward the ceiling and faded away, and the game went on. I was eight years old. * * * Born into the turmoil of World War II while his father served the United States Army in France, Joseph Scerbo spent much of his early life trying to establish a connection with his father. He spent his entire lifetime, however, yearning for his heavenly Father. Now a Catholic priest, Father Joe shares his life-long journey of the human call to relationship through stories of God’s interwoven graces pouring into his life. To know Fr. Joe is to know joy, which makes the pain he encounters all the more surprising. Forty years in the healing ministry have enabled him to share the realities of joy and pain, and the importance of healing through reconciliation. As Fr. Joe tells his story, your heart will open to share his prayer: “Lord open the doors you want to open, close the doors you don’t want to open, and place me in the center of your Perfect Will.”

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. but that he was also a man and a priest who's life in many ways was very much like most of ours By Amazon Customer I found the book to truly capture his essence. A mixture of spirituality and humanity that was Joe Scerbo. As you read, you see that he was an extraordinary man and priest, but that he was also a man and a priest who's life in many ways was very much like most of ours. What I found inspiring reading this book was how he lived his life, how he dealt with everything that life put on his path. He was truly a wonderful, loving, holy man.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. full of grace and meaning By katherine This book is about the essence of Father Joseph Scerbo’s life and spiritual calling to serve God as a Franciscan Friar. He shares with his readers the power of purpose, life’s challenges, what it means to both give and receive but especially, the blessing and healing the soul is graced with when one relies and believes in the guidance of a higher power. His life story which is not only inspiring but practical from birth to passing, overflows with love, compassion and what it means to be human no matter what path in life one chooses as a layperson or as one within a religious order. A beautiful and meaningful story as though you are sitting there with him listening to him tell his story – feeling his love and guidance - just what the world needs no matter what your faith is.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. healing wounds and relationships By Edward A. Estrada Always Forward is a beautiful account of the soul and journey of Fr. Joe Scerbo. He traces the thread of God's grace in his own life, and inspires the reader to do the same Fr.. Joe was all about the healing power of God's love and grace; healing the wounds of life and healing relationships. With his insights gained through years of counseling as well as years practicing the art of loving his fellow human beings, Fr.Joe reaches out to us, inspiring us to look at our own wounds and allow the love of God to wash over them, heal them, and lead us to new depths in our relationship with Him. In healing we are renewed, refreshed, and able to move forward on our own path joyfully.

When Nathan discovered a job lot of the first 106 adventures for sale on eBay, there was never any question that he would place a bid. When the books arrived, he lost himself in the old adventures. Yet, as he flicked through the pages, there was another story being written. In the margins of each book were the scribblings of the little boy who had once owned them, a little boy by the name of Terence John Prendergast. Terence wrote jokes and hints for adventurers following the same stories as him. More troubling, among the notes were intimations of a tormented childhood: of the boys and teachers who bullied him; of the things he hated about himself and had to improve; of his thoughts of suicide and his desperate need to find friends, be liked, and find somebody - anybody - to confide in. THE BOY IN THE BOOK is Nathan's poignant recreation of the discovery of the fragments of Terence Prendergast's diary, his quest to find the lost boy, and the friendship that resulted from their first meeting. In doing so, Nathan is forced to examine his own childhood - and, as his relationship with Terence deepens, he begins to believe that the two men are not so different, and to reflect on the darkness that can exist in childhood.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The undoubted charm of the obsessed and the shy By Lady Fancifull Nathan Penlington is a writer, comedian and performance artist. He also suffered prolonged ill-health as a child, and has an introspective nature prone to obsession. Perhaps, or perhaps not, caused as a reaction to months off school, away from normal peer socialisation"Depression could be understood as stemming from a feeling of lack of control and obsession as about regaining control over your environment. For me obsession was a preventative cure that has since become a personality trait"He is also a compulsive collector - whether of facts or objects. As a child, he amassed, as children often do, various collections. One of these was a series of interactive books by Edward Packard called Choose Your Own Adventure Books, where the reader has the choice of a multiplicity of outcomes, leading to further choices and more.As an adult in his late 20s, briefly living back at his parents home after a relationship break-up, Penlington buys a collection of 106 of these from eBay, revisiting his childhood. He discovers parts of a diary in the pages of one of the books, kept by the then owner, a boy called Terence Prendergast. Some years pass, and Penlington becomes obsessed with tracking down the original owner of those books and the diary. This book is about that search, and also about the performance piece he and others created about the search, and about the `Choose Your Own......' making it an interactive piece for the audience, depending on their choices. This show won a Fringe First award, was highly praised, and Penlington has toured it more widely. All the above is just the bare facts, but can't begin to describe the hilarious, heart-catching, intelligent, compulsive, absorbing, tender, painful, enchanting mix of this book.Questions and doubts occurred to me as I read, and may occur to other readers, but I can't even voice them, because they would/might interfere with your own journey through this delightful mix-up, often darting down side-trails, journey of a book. Anyway, Penlington will answer your questions in the fullness of time.Along the journey you will be exposed to never-sent love letters written by Nathan Penlington to a girl he had a hopeless crush on, when he was 11. Girls (and boys) migh cry with a mix of laughter and Awwwwwwwwwwww at the letter. You will meet a chatty graphologist, psychologists specialising in children, the author of those books, a band of middle aged men who still play Dungeons and Dragons in a shop in Birmingham, presided over by the owner, who perches, cross legged and magus like, on his counter. You will get a blow by blow account of films you never wanted to watch but might now feel curious about. Thrill to the emails of a German Heavy Metal band called Prendergast, contemplate booking a retreat in the Prendergast Caravan park, out of season, follow the trail to Kerrang! Radio DJ Johnny Doom, wonder about the curious disappearance of a photo of astrologer Russell Grant, and more.......Nathan Penlington bares his tender heart, his inquiring mind, his sense of playfulness, self-mockery and his interest in EVERYTHING. You, like the author himself, will absolutely get caught up in the fascination of the quest to find Terence. Does he? Will he? What happens? Why does it take so long for Nathan to decide on the journey at all? Why did he do it? Would you? The book makes the reader ask the questions you might be burning to utter, if you knew Nathan. As you will feel you do.You will also be determined to go and see the show, which, if the book is anything to go by, will bring tears to your eyes as you howl with self-mocking laughter, recognising aspects of your own, weird, quirky, individual humanity.I now need to see if I can track down what the remarkably thrashy and ear-blasting Prendergast band sounded like. Maybe not, I can tell from the lyrics to one song this is not going to be my kind of music.A lovely and life affirming, questy experience!I received this book as an ARC from the publishers

As a child he loved “Choose Your Own Adventure” books – where you could choose various options, which gave different outcomes to the storyline. I too remember reading similar books as a child, where you picked to go down a certain passage, or through a door, and emerged in a different part of the adventure, trying to solve a puzzle. Seeing a complete set of his favourite childhood reads for sale, he immediately ordered them; but was not prepared for the journey this innocuous transaction set him on. On unpacking his purchase, he finds they were all owned by a boy called Terence and, inside the books, he finds notes and even pages from his childhood diary which suggests that he was bullied, lonely and unhappy. The notes are all dated in the 1980’s, which, coincidentally, remind Nathan of his childhood – much of it spent isolated and at home because of illness. The author is quite open about having an obsessive nature – he is a collector, he needs to complete what he begins and he quickly finds that he becomes haunted by the diary. What happened to that boy, who was self conscious, shy and who felt left out and depressed? Despite his girlfriend suggesting he is taking things too far, Nathan begins to try to track down Terence and discover what he is doing now. His concern for the childhood Terence is very touching and you do completely sympathise with his need to discover what happened to this boy; a fellow reader and a lover of puzzles. It is also obvious that Nathan sees much of Terence in himself and identifies strongly with him and his problems.I have to admit that a lot of this book really did make me smile. I also have quite an obsessive nature and so I did understand why Nathan felt the need to discover Terence’s whereabouts; although he did seem quite compulsive. Eventually, Nathan has to question why he needs to know what happened quite so badly and he realises that he has to face up to his own issues. On the journey, there are musings and digressions on all sorts of things; from diary keeping, handwriting analysis, shyness, illness and general bookishness. Nathan even gets to meet the author of the Adventure books and question him about the series. I think this will appeal to many readers, especially those who enjoy finding the notes, dedications and inscriptions found in second hand books. Overall, this was an oddly moving book – both humorous and profound – and I am really glad that I read it.Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Boy in the Book By Damaskcat The author bought a collection of over one hundred 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books from the nineteen eighties on eBay. He had loved them as a child but had never had a full collection. When he receives them he finds that their previous owner Terence Prendergarst, had written his name and address in them as well as making comments in the margins and leaving pages from a diary in one of the books. An obsession with Terry and a need to know what happened to him dominates his life for several years. This book is the story of what happened when he tried to locate the previous owner of the books and in the process uncover some aspects of his own childhood and maybe come to terms with it. So this book is part quest and part memoir and also partly a book about books. I had never heard of the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books so I was intrigued by the whole concept. I found the author's quest to track Terry down fascinating though at times it was also mildly irritating and I wanted to know why he didn't just look up the guy's childhood address on the internet and see who lived there now! But that wouldn't have made the book half so interesting so I've since got over that irritation.I found the book a fascinating, funny and at times poignant read. It is about childhood, adventure, making choices and keeping diaries among many other subjects. If you like books which could lead you anywhere then try this one. If you like memoirs and mysteries then read this. Lastly if you still remember your childhood reading choices then read this.

They say that when telling a story, the first sentence and the last sentence are the most important. However, this book takes you on quite a heartwrenching journey that makes it practically impossible to put down. It's a story of loyalty, brotherhood, love, perseverence, of persistent hardships met by an even greater drive for overcoming obstacles and adversity. The language is simple and direct, but the messages are profound, thought provoking and strike you at the very core. I would highly recommend this book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. WAAAOOO ... AMAZING AND THRILLING ... A REAL EYE OPENER !! By Luis D Pimentel Waaaoooo ... Amazing and thrilling ... My heart fell to the ground with the horrible situation that these two honest law enforcement officers went through. This book exposes the dirt and corruption that plagues agencies like the FBI and the Police departments around the country. This book is a real eye opener My heart and sympathy are with these two officers whom were use as scapegoats to cover and protect the guilty.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. We shelter ourselves as human beings with people we trust and expect that we will not be betrayed by those that we love. This bo By Amazon Customer Ignored Truth was extremely entertaining however sadly true. This book made me feel extremely emotional for two reasons: We have all had that one person in our family that would ask for help and never take our kindness for ignorance. The one person in the family that you would trust your first born with. The one person in your family that would never stab you in the back. That one person you would bet your life on in being there as family does. Not in ignored truth. If I could reach through the pages and choke someone it would be Tony, and his wife. We shelter ourselves as human beings with people we trust and expect that we will not be betrayed by those that we love. This book takes you on a river ride of immeasurable heartache and destructive circumstances caused by a trusted "so called" family friend from a New York Dominican family. I have added the ethnicity and location of the family because if you know a Dominican you know they live by the FAMILY and die by the FAMILY especially as immigrants living in NYC.My second reason for feeling so emotional after reading Ignored Truth is Law enforcement and the corruption that runs ramped throughout all departments. It's amazing how the FBI wanted to use these two officers to do the dirty work (snitch) instead of internal affairs who failed to do their job. I can't imagine how these men survived adversity after losing the things they cherished the most. Their good FAMILY name and their badge. Together they prevailed as a true Dominican family does.. American strong! Read this true story you will not be disappointed but in turn be inspired by two admirable men taken advantage of and surviving!

PDF Ebook Online Jason Priestley: A Memoir, by Jason Priestley

Jason Priestley, star of the iconic hit television series Beverly Hills, 90210 and one of the biggest teen idols of the 1990s, chronicles the highs and lows of his life and career in this charming and honest memoir.

The hit Fox show Beverly Hills, 90210 became a cultural touchstone of the 1990s and propelled its young cast to mega-stardom, including Jason Priestley, who played honorable Midwestern transplant Brandon Walsh. Yet despite more than twenty years in and out of the limelight, Priestley has carefully maintained his privacy. In this compelling memoir, the actor, director, and race-car aficionado invites us into his private world for the first time.

With humor, sincerity, and charm, Priestley offers little-known details about his life and stories of his nine years in America’s most famous zip code. He talks candidly about celebrity, marriage, fatherhood, and his passion for car racing. He does not shy away from the devastating lows—his brief jail sentence for drunk driving and the crash at the Kentucky Speedway that nearly took his life. Priestley shares his innermost thoughts about life as a ’90s icon, and goes beyond the Brandon Walsh squeaky-clean image, revealing the tumultuous events that have shaped him, and where he finds his greatest happiness today.

Jason Priestley: A Memoir, by Jason Priestley

From the Back Cover

Where were you when you discovered life in America's favorite zip code?

For nine years, Jason Priestley was Brandon Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210, the popular hit that skyrocketed an unprepared Priestley to fame and made him the defining face of an era. But Priestley's private life was even more compelling than the character he played on TV. Now, he tells it all—his time on the set of 90210, his brief stint in prison, and, ultimately, his happy marriage and fatherhood.

In Jason Priestley: A Memoir, Priestley tells about his life as a young, unknown working actor sharing an apartment with Brad Pitt, learning the ropes from Johnny Depp, being scolded by Sam Elliott, and being challenged by Shannen Doherty. Always candid, yet never mean-spirited, Priestley talks with wit and humor about his roller-coaster years before, during, and after living in America's most famous zip code.

It was such a good read and I couldn't put it down.If your wanting to read this for the juicy gossip of 90210 then I don't recommend it because even though he does talk about 90210 and the other actors and actresses but says nothing negative or ugly and only speaks the truth about the relationships he had with them and any other actor he has worked with in his career. He also talks more though about his love life, his racing career, and what it's really like trying to make it as an actor. It was all though very well written and tasteful and I have to say after reading that I have a new found likeness for Jason Priestly..the way he talks about the people that have come in and out of his life, his wife and his children is just so genuine and kind. The outlook he now has on life after his racing accident is inspirational. I love reading but if it doesn't get my attention in the first two chapters I won't finish reading it but he did an awesome job to make u just want to keep on reading.I highly recommend this book!!! Two thumbs up :)

I was really looking forwards to some insight about the era. Didn't really get any. Is there a way to gossip while at the same time not talking s***? I wanted some more behind the scenes info.Anyways, here's what else I wished was included:1- like another reviewer mentioned, wasn't he married a woman named Ashley in the late 90s? Why no mention of being a stepfather, even if it was for only a year or so. Weird to cut a wife and kid out a memoir.2- Page 46 states he was playing a 15 year in 1990 when show started. NOT! I'm confused still 20-plus years later. Weren't they 11th grade 16 year olds driving around from day one and then for some reason, they ended up three years in high school, class of '93. Why the weird time frame? An explanation please.Liked reading the stories, especially about how Brad (esp. the bible part), Johnny, and Tiffani were as nice as it gets. Shows kindness keeps ones career alive.

Quick and Entertaining Memoir By Suzanne Church When I read, I usually take my time with a book, savoring the plot a chapter at a time. While browsing in the bookstore today, I found a chair and sat down intending to read a page or two, the first chapter at most of "Jason Priestly: A Memoir".Then I finished the book. It's compelling, easy to read, clear, heartfelt, and honest. If you've followed Priestly's acting, producing, directing, or racing career, you'll enjoy this memoir.

Best Ebook Red Blood, Yellow Skin, by Linda L.T. Baer

Red Blood, Yellow Skin is the story of a young girl's survival in war-torn Vietnam during the First Indochina War between France and Vietnam, the civil war between North and South Vietnam, and the later American involvement in the Vietnam War. Linda Baer was born Nguyen Thi Loan, in the village of Tao Xa, Thai Binh Province, in North Vietnam in 1947. When she was four years old, the Viet Minh attacked her village and killed her father, leaving Loan and her mother to fend for themselves. Seeking escape from impoverishment, her mother married a rich and dominating widower who was cruel to his free-spirited and mischievous stepdaughter. Loan found solace in the company of animals and insects and escaped into the branches of trees. In 1954, her family chose to relocate to South Vietnam, rather than live under the yoke of communist North Vietnam. When Loan was thirteen, she ran away to Saigon to flee the cruelty of her stepfather and worked at menial jobs to help her family. At seventeen, she was introduced to bars, nightclubs, and Saigon Tea. At eighteen, she dated and lived with a young American airman. Two months after their baby was born, the airman returned to America, and Loan never heard from him again. She raised their son by herself. However, time healed her heart, and she eventually found true love in a young air force officer, whom she married and accompanied to America in 1971. Red Blood, Yellow Skin is a story of romance, culture, traditions, and family. It describes the pain, struggle, despair, and violence as Loan lived it. The story is hers, but it is also an account of Vietnam of those who were uprooted, displaced, brutalized, and left homeless. It is about this struggle to survive and her extraordinary triumph over adversity that Baer writes. Linda Baer was born Nguyen Thi Loan, in a small village in North Vietnam. Her family relocated to South Vietnam in 1954. She spent most of her youth in Saigon, where she met her husband. She followed him to America in 1971 and became an American citizen in 1973. She currently resides in Charleston, South Carolina, where she is a successful businesswoman.

Red Blood, Yellow Skin, by Linda L.T. Baer

Review "Mrs. Baer's book is an emotional account of a horrific time in Vietnam, and her story provides great insight into the lives of those who the war affected the most. Although she experienced death and hardship early and often, Mrs. Baer marched on with a strong head and strong heart. Her story emphasizes the importance of love, perseverance, family, and hope. I highly recommend this book to those who want to read about an amazing woman and her quest for happiness in a country at war." -- Bibliosy Blog"A heart-warmingly honest book as told by Linda Loan Thi Baer herself. Born and growing up through the Vietnam conflict, Loan stays strong and true to her family and the responsibilities imposed by them. Truly memorable, Loan's struggle is mirrored daily around the world, in different cultures and countries. Highly recommended reading." -- Polly Halicki

It's so sad that we as humans often treat each other as if we are the only people who matter. If someone is different than we are we act as if that means they are somehow beneath us. Linda shows us the real, human side of the war and the pain war brings to everyone. It is a beautiful, insightful writing of the life as she experienced it during such a painful time in our world's history.

Baer is one of the most vulnerable and deeply emotional biographies I've read. Ever. Chapters 1-3 spelled out the most heartbreaking and terrifying words I've read about a child's life. Poor Loan Oi, so young and having seen more in her life than some fortunate adults. She probably only survived because of the blessing of innocence and ignorance at her young age, though it seemed she still grew up much faster than a child deserves to. This poignant, simple, but very telling line gave me goosebumps, "sweet guava turned bitter in my mouth."The story is told by Linda Baer, Nguyen Thi Loan as she was growing up in Vietnam, from her perspective as things occur through her life. I feel that the first-person narration that recounts the events of her life make a successful impact on how attached I am to her story. It kept reminding me that this is a biography. This happened, and not only to Mrs. Baer, but sadly to many. I read another book fairly recently (highly recommended also) called Hearts, Minds and Coffee by Kent Hinckley, and it was based on a true story of his past in being an American drafted to the Vietnam War (something he was vehemently against, and that fact nearly got him killed), but it was another look at the native Vietnamese and how some were impacted so horrifically during a time of war. The perspective in Red Blood, Yellow Tears from an innocent toddler and how it shaped her life, her beliefs, and her future makes this book so impactful and a quite a compelling read. For as sad as some of the accounts are, even when she is an adult and faces more strife and pain, there is hope, there is proof of perseverance and faith, and Mrs. Baer is inspirational. She's a very talented writer and paints the canvas of the book perfectly. Despite the overall darkness of the topic, there is this amazing book that will not be forgotten. I highly recommend this book for those who love biographies, books written during the 1950's and the Vietnam era, and anyone who loves to read about a Phoenix rising from the ashes. I look forward to reading more from this author as well. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Most of what I know and have read of the Vietnam War era is from either an American perspective, or from a soldier's perspective. I haven't read much about life as a civilian during that time, or what it was like to be a refugee fleeing from the north to the south.Linda's story was eye-opening, to say the least. The amount of pain and suffering she experienced during her childhood years is far more than most people will experience in their entire lifetime. And yet, she remained steadfast and strong, always fighting and working to protect her family and putting others before herself. It takes a certain kind of person to be willingly separated from their family, especially at such a vulnerable age. But even in her tumultuous teenage years, Linda demonstrated a maturity and wisdom beyond her years. And it is comforting to know that she was rewarded with the love and happiness she deserves - Linda and Don's love story is one for the ages!I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in memoirs, the history of Vietnam, and stories about overcoming great odds.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Excerpt from The Science of the EmotionsThus ancient philosophy took its rise in the relation of the Jīva, the separated or individualised self, to those two constant companions of its life, the two sole guides of all its action - Pleasure and Pain, Joy and Sorrow, Happiness and Misery, Gladness and Sadness. It set a distinct aim before itself, the aim of relieving pain - that pain, that master pain, of doubt, uncertainty, and hopelessness, which, while it lasts, poisons the very roots of life, and throws all other pains, even the pains of positive material loss and physical torture, into the shade. And it proceeded straight from pain to the cause of pain, and thence to the remedy. That philosophy remains and will remain true for ever, but it has to be modelled into ever new forms to meet the needs of the ever changing races of humanity.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The book provides only a tentative classification of emotions with respect to their nature and complexity. It's obvious that all that is highly subjective, so everyone will have a different viewpoint with regard to whence comes this or that emotion, and what it really intends to express. However, the interest of this book is to make the reader think about his very emotions, to analyze a little bit the important social and learned components in most emotions. If you are interested in analyzing your very emotions, then this book may be useful. If you rather want to learn the definitive truth about the psychology of emotions, then better stop right now searching for something that does not exist...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. How to understand you nature By A customer A great adjunct to understanding oneself. I would add, it is for the serious student, not, perhaps so great for the curious person.
