Rebecca West was a leading figure in the twentieth century literary scene. A passionate suffragist, socialist, fiercely intelligent, Rebecca West began her career as a writer with articles in The Freewoman and The Clarion. Her first book, a biography of Henry James, was published when she was only twenty-four, and her first novel followed just two years later. She had a notorious affair with H.G. Wells, and their illegitimate son, Anthony, was born at the beginning of the First World War.The author of several novels, she is perhaps best remembered for her classic account of pre-war Yugoslavia, Black Lamb, Grey Falcon (published by Macmillan in 1941 and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago) and for her coverage of the Nuremberg Trials. When she died in 1983 at the age of 90, William Shawn, then editor-in-chief of The New Yorker, said: “Rebecca West was one of the giants and will have a lasting place in English literature. No one in this century wrote more dazzling prose, or had more wit, or looked at the intricacies of human character and the ways of the world more intelligently.” Formidably talented, West was a towering figure in the British literary landscape. Lorna Gibb's vivid and insightful biography affords a dazzling insight into her life and work.

The Extraordinary Life of Rebecca West: A Biography, by Lorna Gibb

Review "It's especially impressive that Gibb manages to chronicle West's often complicated life in an even-handed, coherent way. Fast-paced and well-researched, The Extraordinary Life of Rebecca West is a fine biography of a writer whose life and career was full of fascinating contradictions and intersections." —NPR Books"This biography is fast-paced and written with sympathy for Cicely" —The Missourian"A new biography of Rebecca West details the private battles of one of the most renowned journalists of the 20th century." —Star Tribune"West was a woman of 'surprising contradictions,' and this biography captures them all without losing sight of the very real person in whom they resided." —Washington Post"Gibb’s meticulous biography, [...] concentrates [...] on her magnetic subject’s complex personality and all the drama and controversy that make West’s life truly “extraordinary.”—Booklist"...as Gibb reminds us, West's work deserves to be remembered and appreciated in its own right." — National GeographicPraise for the UK Edition of West's World:"…it presents with discerning succinctness, a sharply etched portrait of a true original…Cissie Fairfield remained alive and well inside her alter ego, to judge from Lorna Gibb's brisk and affectionate biography."—The Sunday Times"This riveting book is not a typical literary biography…Lorna Gibb may have read all of Rebecca West's vast output, but she does not flaunt it…Miss Gibb wisely leaves it to others to appraise her subject as a writer. What she does is to tell a gripping story of a woman's life…"—Country Life"…in this calm, well researched biography she does an excellent job of reminding us why West was so ahead of her time."—The Mail"…Lorna Gibb makes the most of the reams of papers that West and her many friends and acquaintances produced."—Literary Review

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. DISAPPOINTING! By jackspin This book got such a positive review on NPR, I was really looking forward to a great read. Instead, I found something that was superficial and jumpy - laundry lists of lovers, illnesses, and resentments, with no discussion, development, or depth. It lacks flow; there are grammatical errors and just plain unimpressive writing. The book left me with no feeling that I'd like to meet Rebecca West or even read anything she wrote - in fact, there was very little discussion of her as a writer, or of her writing. I think West has been sadly disserved by Lorna Gibb - and feel that I have been, too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Yet Lorna Gibb's excellent biography taught me so much that I did not ... By Tony N. Redd I studied the work of Rebecca West for over three years before writing my doctoral dissertation about her and Dame Rebecca was a dear personal friend during the last decade of her life. She and I spent many hours in the luxurious setting of her life discussing just about everything under the sun. Yet Lorna Gibb's excellent biography taught me so much that I did not know about Rebecca West's life or her art. Gibb writes with economy and brilliance and manages to get to the heart of almost every matter that concerned the dazzling and extremely complicated Rebecca West. I highly recommend this book to all students of twentieth century literature!

Growing Up?is written by a well established author, previously writing in a quite different genre, that of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and counselling. But this book is written for an entirely different readership. Casement has put together a fascinating account of his strange journey from a privileged background, through schools and national service and through university, avoiding throughout the pull of his family for him to join the Royal Navy. Instead, he leaves university with a degree but heads straight into becoming a bricklayer's mate. From there, eventually, he gets through the vicissitudes of Probation and Social Work, and the hilarious experiences of trying to furnish his first flat. He thus moves into what he describes as the "real" world--getting what his family would regard as a "real job" (or two). But despite that, he continues on his unpredictable journey--into becoming a psychotherapist and then a psychoanalyst: what his mother thought was "training to become a psychotic." This book is filled with laughter, the author laughing at himself and inviting the reader to join with him in this.

Growing Up?: A Journey With Laughter (Karnac Library Series), by Patrick Casement

Review 'The formative years of an analyst are not merely an unusual subject but a delicate undertaking. Patrick Casement handles his remarkably detailed retrospective with lightness, charm and affection through vivid snapshots of family, school, teenage and adult life - vignettes written with humour, sensitivity and an acute sense of irony bordering at times on hilarity. The reader is immersed in what at times can feel like a long lost era in which the themes of war, class, family relationships, friendships, tenderness, loss and love are conveyed with a deceptive simplicity that readers of Casement's works will recognise.'- Paul Williams, Training Analyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society and formerly Joint Editorin-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis from 2001-2007 'This book contains many entertaining anecdotes, but it is also a painfully honest account of Patrick Casement's childhood and the various forces leading him to become an influential psychoanalyst. The book will be of great interest to all those thinking about how our own and others' childhood experiences shape us as adults. Patrick's writings have always urged us to "learn from our mistakes". They have also always helped us to tolerate irreconcilable conflicts of feelings, and this very moving book does that once again.'- Dilys Daws, Honorary Consultant Child Psychotherapist, Tavistock Clinic'We might expect a notable psychoanalyst to have a good recall of his early years - but with such humour? I chuckled and laughed out loud. We see the beginnings of Patrick's independence of thought and his sympathy with those like himself who do not "fit the frame". He finds his calling not to the ordained priesthood that he once considered, but to the priestly task of reconciling people to themselves and the reality beyond.'- Peter Wheatley, Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Dioceses of London, Southwark, and Chichester'Patrick Casement's seminal contributions to psychoanalysis are known worldwide and deeply appreciated by therapists everywhere. In this fascinating and tremendously entertaining book, Casement recounts the life journey of the man behind the eminent psychoanalyst. His story is a great adventure told with joy and humour. This is a book that will delight readers everywhere who are not only interested in the making of a psychoanalyst, but who love a great story, beautifully told.'- Theodore Jacobs, MD, Training and Supervising Analyst, the New York and IPE Psychoanalytic Institutes and author of The Possible Profession: The Analytic Process of Change

About the Author Patrick Casement is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and a Member of the International Association of Psychoanalysis. He was formerly a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society, having been in full-time private practice for many years, now retired. He is the author of numerous publications.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You'll read this as if you were a relative, reading the family biography, learning about your roots. By Paul D. Kreisinger, LCSW We often come to know our analytical heroes via their journal writings and books, and, if we are fortunate, we get to study with them or at least hear them give papers from time to time. Many of us, however, by dint of logistics or geography, do not (and will never) get a chance to meet with them for dinner, for lunch, for tea, or spend a Sunday afternoon in the park, reminiscing. I have come to know Patrick Casement through his clinical writing and owe him a large debt of gratitude for showing me the way to be a clinical social worker, to find my clinical footing and to be a sensitive and empathic therapist. Although I have corresponded with him over the years, I have never met him, nor have I travelled to England to meet up with him. I do feel that I know him, as I have vicariously sat with him in his treatment room in sessions reported in his clinical books. Here, however, in Growing Up? A Journey with Laughter, we are treated to a virtual weekend in the Casement home, where we share tea and sandwiches, share walks in the park, while Patrick tells us stories of his growing up, attending boarding school, university, national service and probation training. This is a very personal, poignant and intimate sharing of a pre-psychoanalytic life, a journey of becoming the man who you have come to know, professional to professional. Free of attitude and rich in humility, Casement shares all the granular experiences that make the man. We are lucky to be able to hear his stories, and walk with him as he remembers a life well lived.

Nobody anticipated a change from heterosexual man to heterosexual woman—least of all the author herself. This is a marvelously candid memoir of gender and acceptance; one that breaks down many complex issues, though it is her enchanting British humor that makes them such a joy to read. Inner and outer recognition is uncovered through dating debacles, painful family discussions, and trips to Victoria’s Secret. Challenges of pesky pronouns, passport humiliation and underwhelming cup sizes test her spirit yet her charismatic wit never wanes. There are laugh out loud moments, heart-wrenching ones too as she tussles with the balance between he and she, and how gender is perceived—for herself and for those around her. Back in the 80s and 90s Chase was a globe-trotting DJ who played exotic clubs in the Middle East and southern China, then an indie music radio host in Hong Kong. However, having played at rooftop parties for sheiks, been a maestro in the clubs, and a household name on the airwaves, it was only after relocating to New York that the real journey began. Why was he feeling like a she? The feeling wouldn’t go away. Then the first cross-dressing steps into Manhattan as a woman. Embarrassing wigs, stares on the subway, and heels an inch from respectability. Through painful, unexpected, and hilarious experiences, a tipping point of gender was reached. But how to tell those who knew her as a man before? Friends were both won and lost, but the biggest announcement was over a cup of Earl Grey: the excruciating moment of disclosure with her 80-year old mother. The devolution and rebuilding of that amazing relationship is one of the most heart-rending threads of this book. Humor drives her forward as she explores the New York dating life as a woman. She gets thrown out of a strip club as a perceived threat to business, initiates her first bikini moment, and has a love match at the US Open Tennis Championships. Puberty happens for a renewed time in a different gender, and with that, dodgy fashion choices and overzealous make-up. She was a 16 year old girl in her 40s. As she considers life changing surgery, one moment of epiphany ensues, yet clarity comes with a kick. What would be next? There are martinis on top of the world, the pyramids at dawn, and high-speed motorbike rides through Asian back streets, but Tea and Transition is far more than a globetrotting travelogue or another tale of a right-soul-in-the-wrong-body. This is a wonderfully personal journey through places beyond the physical. Of change and the human spirit, love and family values, and how one man became one woman.

Tea and Transition, by Nicola Jane Chase

About the Author

Nicola Jane Chase grew up in the suburbs of Liverpool, northwest England, as a passionate music lover and as a man. The first of many changes was quitting a stable career in retail management for the more adventurous, if insecure, life of a globetrotting club DJ playing dance tracks for the international jet set. She (albeit then still a he) then shifted direction and spent a decade on the airwaves of Hong Kong delivering cool indie tunes to a dedicated fan base. In 2008 she relocated to New York, the city she now calls home.

Music has since taken a back seat, yet her knowledge of 1980s tracks remains impressive, and her pleasure from listening to them rarely wanes. Now unreservedly she, her focus these days is on fostering greater transgender understanding and acceptance. To that end, she is a popular speaker at public and private events, and welcomes media inquiries.

An avid tennis player, she lives for the warmer days of summer when she can play on the outside courts in New York City. When not writing, speaking, flicking through rare 12 vinyl, or working on her backhand slice, she can often be found in her Queens back yard tending rhubarb and arguing with her gooseberry bushes.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. beautiful, moving, transformative, and FUNNY By Lori Stone This beautiful memoir frequently made me cry, and just as frequently it made me laugh. Most importantly, the story left me in a bit of awe at the possibilities of human experience, and at the author's skill in translating what could be melodramatic into lovely prose that quietly illuminated her own deeply personal experiences—into a story that can reach every reader. Never maudlin, never self-pitying, never tragic, hers is a story of becoming, and figuring out, and finding her way with herself and her mother, who is another heroine in this story.Transgendered people seem to be having a moment now, with TRANSPARENT here on Amazon, Bruce Jenner's quiet coming out, and LGBT rights too-slowly gaining increased acceptance and understanding. If you have ever wondered for a moment what it might be like to have this experience, Tea and Transition is a fantastic starting point because of Chase's thoughtful and elegant storytelling. No two transgendered people have the same experience, so this is hers and hers alone, but you will certainly find yourself moved and enlightened. I always love to read a memoir that leaves me with a new hero or heroine, a new person to admire, and this book is just such a memoir. Heartily recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written and honest account By Vera Amaral Nicola’s memoir is a beautifully written and honest account of one woman’s journey of self-awareness, acceptance and love. Nicola is a talented writer and was able to vividly convey the emotions she was feeling along her journey. I laughed, I cried and I cheered her on. In the end, I felt honored to have been able to read such a personal and moving story.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read if you love Hollywood! By Julia D. Herriott With full disclosure here, I tell you that I have known Tommy Lightfoot Garrett for several years now. After he appeared on the cover of a magazine that I once published, we became instant friends. Despite the fact that Tommy plays in the Hollywood game, he is one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever known. His latest celebrity book, "The Prints of Hollywood," was recently published. It follows publication of his other non-fiction books, "Letters from a Known Woman: Joan Fontaine," "So, You Want to Be in Pictures: The Making of Hollywood Idols," "The Making of Hollywood Stars" as well as a science-fiction novel, "Cosmic's Adventure," and its sequel, "Cosmic's Battle in Salt Lake.""The Prints of Hollywood" features behind-the-scenes stories about such legendary stars as Bob Hope, Doris Day, Charlton Heston and Loretta Young. It's amazing how Tommy is able to separate his personal relationships and beliefs in these great stars and make an honest appraisal of their work and place in our lives--and in history itself. This 300-page tome is filled with hundreds of one-of-a-kind, personally autographed photos from many of the stars highlighted in the book. Each chapter places our beloved icons in various categories, which include Child Stars, Funny Stars, TV Stars, Actresses who Exude Class on the Screen, Cult Classic Films and Legendary Leading Men Who Cannot Be Replaced. This wonderful book is very much an encyclopedia of Who's Who in Hollywood, which is what Tommy Garrett knows best. One of my favorite chapters in the book is about Cowboys in Hollywood. While he is able to give us the goods on current big stars like Clint Eastwood, Tommy also dishes on some of the stars of yesteryear who made Westerns in the 1950s that we all grew up loving and admiring. From Lena Horne to Elizabeth Taylor to Anthony Quinn, Tommy Garrett has pretty much known them all. And even the few stars he didn't meet personally, Tommy is generous enough to include them in this book. He shares some of the background that continues to make these stars the iconic figures they are on the big screen. Film is forever.Though I thought Tommy hit the ball out of the park with "So, You Want to Be in Pictures," I believe his new book will become one of my top favorites. I enjoyed reading it over a long, quiet weekend and found his stories about such obscure stars as John Agar as fascinating as his descriptions of Farley Granger and Angela Lansbury, for instance. What is great about Tommy's writing (and all of his previous work) is that he never belittles, demeans or hurts the people featured in the book. He always tries to give people credit for what they did, and if he ever has to criticize someone, it's not personal. He doesn't write tabloid-type attacks on celebrities, realizing that someone's career and hard work is to be respected. That being said, Tommy is also quite honest in his reportage. I enjoyed his revealing anecdotes about such stars as Tony Curtis and Mickey Rooney, for example. I learned a lot about his Hollywood friends in that chapter as well.No matter who your favorite star may be, chances are that he or she is featured in this great book. Phyllis Diller, Eileen Fulton and Constance Towers are just a few of Tommy's friends he discusses within its pages, sharing amazing things with the reader about what makes each of these stars so special, so fascinating to watch on the screen.Tommy Garrett has had a taste of much of what he writes about in this book, having produced and starred in his own TV series. Every week Tommy writes about the stars in print, commenting on celebrities on the radio, both stateside and internationally, as well. He will be making his motion-picture debut in Henry Jaglom's "Queen of the Lot" later this year. For readers looking for great entertainment, honest reporting and all those juicy tidbits that only Hollywood insiders can share, "The Prints of Hollywood" is the book for you. Julia

Mr. Garrett has amassed an incredible amount of photographs of some of the best stars of Hollywood's Golden Era, when glamour was a way a life. But even better than the pictures are the insights the author provides about his subjects, most of which he knew and some of which were friends. Mr. Garrett is every bit as classy as the people he writes about, never salacious and always elegantly astute in his descriptions of some of film and tv's greats.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't recommend it enough if you are a fan of classic Hollywood.

Review "From raw and compelling prose, a moving portrait emerges of Brian. From cowed child to fierce rebel and finally to an adult battling his own inner demons. This is a finely crafted memoir." Australian Woman's Day."O'Raleigh is a convincing writer and this book is good enough to deserve ranking with Angela's Ashes. He mixes dialog, narrative and reflection in a memoir that is always engrossing, often scary and sometimes funny. He deserves great credit." The Australian Irish Echo."Brian is no angel. He's an infuriating drunk and an irresponsible brute - which is why this story of ultimate redemption is so powerful. It has its lighter moments too, where innocent humour offers respite from the cynical and wistful mood." Australian New Idea."In this searingly honest memoir O'Raleigh chronicles the abuse that would leave him scarred for life. The fact that he can now write about his tumultuous origins, given over to crime, drugs and alcohol, must mean that he has at last conquered his own inner demons. This is an engrossing read." Ballarat Courier, Australia.

From the Author    Dear reader, I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I have enjoyed writing them. I began writing at the age of 60 or so, up until then I had not written a word on paper or elsewhere(save for the occasional shopping list) for many, many years. I mean that literally, I did not even write to my mother, my wife wrote all letters about family news, events etc. Looking back it was if I had an aversion to writing, probably something that developed from my school days at St Joseph's College, Blackpool. A Christian Brother's nightmare of a school that has long since been pulled down and mostly forgotten. I have no ill feeling towards the Brother's I myself was madder than most of them and I gave back as much as they handed out to me.I began writing after an incident in my own life, described in 'Dancing with Daemons' where I felt I had been badly treated and wished to address that. I was very angry about something that had happened and that anger drove me to words. The subsequent book that was published was then immediately banned. Not because of any other reason other than I told the truth. That was the beginning of my writing career. Nobody was more amazed than myself.I now also run courses on how one finds ones 'gift' in life, one's 'calling'. Not from any airy fairy perspective but from practical experience and a belief in the words and ideas of such luminaries as Socrates and Plato.  Enough! I love writing, I am now on my 6th book. My favourite is 'The Storyteller of Inis Mor' I hope we can make a movie of it. Good Luck. Brian O'Raleigh     For details of books contact: Amazon.com   brianoraleigh@hotmail.com

How many times can you read about someone's drunken binges. However the last third of the book got very interesting again.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Depressing, repetitive, boring By J. S. Ramsey Most depressing book I read in a long time. I was ordering The Boys in the Boat which was inspiring. This book was a huge disappointment and wish Amazon would refund my money and reimburse me for the time I read this book

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant, evocative - loved it By Lorcan Dalton I loved this book and read it within a week of downloading it. There have been a lot of 'Irish misery' memoirs published so I didn't know what to expect, but this one's different. Brian writes really evocatively about his difficult childhood, and even more powerfully about his battle with 'the demon drink' in adulthood. He's a very vivid writer - you can really picture what's happening and the path that his life ends up taking is inspirational. Highly recommended.

In The Second Coming of Christ, Paramahansa Yogananda writes that God keeps the door to a soul's past lives tightly closed, lest we give undue attention to former glories or disastrous errors, rather than on the present life. However, Yogananda then goes on to say, that God nevertheless permits us glimpses when the purpose is beneficial. This book offers such glimpses into several of the past lives of this beloved, God-realized Master. A number of Yogananda’s direct disciples already shared with us the identity of some of his former lives – like Arjuna and William the Conqueror. A little known fact is, that in his talks and writings, Yogananda himself left many clues about some of the other roles he played in in the past. Through the blessings of God and Gurus, the author was able to discover and decode some of these clues, and presents them here for the inspiration of the reader.

America’s Most Honest Memoir Betty Dodson's memoir is the story of one woman's struggle to liberate female sexuality while enjoying her own. In the 70s, as the feminist movement evolved, focusing on various platform issues including equal pay and voter registration, Betty latched on to sexual liberation as a symbol for self-empowerment. Realizing that so many women weren't enjoying sex, she asked, "How could women ever be truly equal if they were reliant on men for their sexual satisfaction?" She quickly became the leader of the sex-positive feminist movement. And the rest is history.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Memoir Documents Sexual Empowerment By Becky Sharp Hold onto your pants: this one sizzles! Betty Dodson, rightly revered as the “godmother of masturbation”, details her metamorphosis from wife to sex rebel to feminist activist. Her story begins in New York in the pre-Mad Men 1950s when men went to work and stupped their secretaries while wives vacuumed and shook the after-5 martinis, a paradigm she later dubbed “pair bondage”. As her near sexless marriage iced over, Dodson did fashion illustration and drew classical nudes at the Art Students League until divorce and a prescient mentor changed her life. And how! She details the iterations: serial partner sex, orgiastic group sex, a San Francisco commune, bisexuality, pleasure revolutionary, feminist outlaw, and politically incorrect sex, and oh yes, more. But throughout masturbation was her lodestar. Yet early on in her sexual odyssey, she worried, “How were people going to respond to a woman who was so openly into sex?” This is a question routinely asked by women today who are still branded as sluts for having too much, too weird, or too kinky sex. Dodson’s story relates how she dealt with it until she came up for air and in answer to a clueless reporter declared, “My idea of power was to have control over my own life, not to put out sexually in order to survive.” Her memoir details how she figured this out: "Masturbation is our primary sexual life. It is our sexual base. Everything we do beyond that is simply how we choose to socialize our sex life."

From beginning to end Betty had me laughing, turned on or crying! Her honesty, willingness to challenge society's norms and perseverance in the face of constant criticism are commendable. As a woman I feel deep gratitude for her work and the way that she accepts people as they are. No more and no less. Highly recommended!!

Honest Hardhitting Breakthrough Lifestory By Stevanne Auerbach Betty Dodson’s My Sexual Memoir is a breathtakingly honest, hard hitting account of a life well-lived breaking barriers and boundaries. More explicit then Anais Nin or Henry Miller combined this author, teacher, researcher reveals an amazing pioneer’s pathway to opening new doors to inner and social limits of sexual explorations. Brava Betty for telling it all in captivating prose! The amazing photos from the tight chignon depicted on the book cover to the trademark short hair and a lot more reveals observable changes and expanding courage. Would also love to see a book of Dodson’s outstanding art work that has been shown to audiences coast to coast. This book takes us on a personal journey, a travel guide through female sexuality. This is a must book for anyone ready to venture forth.

It tells how she used her mind to learn, to work, to become a wife and mother--while being in her words "differently able" rather than handicapped. This book tells of her journey through life facing every challenge with the attitude that where there is a will, God will provide the way. Mother said "there is nothing beyond determination"--and she lived it. She survived and thrived a life hero's and giants would fail. This book encourages and inspires others who are also "differently able" and those considered 'normally abled' to pursue their dreams--to uncover and utilize their talents. And it calls for care givers, educational institutions and facilities to be even more compassionate and determined to value and acknowledge the true worth of every individual--no matter what their age or physical condition is. In my words mother raised the bar. I believe the gravest disease of society is lack of expectation. I hope this book will challenge us all to expect more and do more.

90-POUND HEAVYWEIGHT: the Life and Triumph of Janet Barnes: Celebrate the legacy of her unsinkable and unstoppable fighting spirit!, by Angela Barnes

About the Author With sincerity and vulnerability Angela Barnes writes from her heart. Her poetry and songs are a mixture of hurts and fears - sometimes caustic – to a transcendence of hopefulness through uplifting and awe-inspiring language. She shares her life journey of growing up in a household where both parents were “differently abled” (quadriplegic and paraplegic). She shares how poetry served as an avenue through which she could visit her pain, frustrations, shame, anger and guilt feelings. She found that poetry gave her an internal voice which later led to an emerging willingness to reveal a voice of authenticity. In writing about her mother’s extraordinary life with a fierce determination and will to live fully, regardless of appearances, (90-pound heavyweight) Angela found in herself a deep compassion not only for her mother, but for all others who were in pain because of their circumstances. She began experiencing life both as an observer and participant. After years of expressing her feelings through poetry (over five decades), and later documenting her mother’s exceptional life, she realized the awesome power of her own voice. She began understanding the healing power of speaking the truth boldly even when it was soul-paining. She farther realized that each event she encountered shaped her life–resulting in the emergence of a new and dynamic voice–one that is empowered and empowering. Angela’s desire now is that her words may serve as a catalyst for others to find their own innate power to live life more fully in peace and joy.

It is the story of a woman who was born with a broken neck, probably caused by the doctor who delivered her at home. Yet she holds no resentment or anger. As one of her amazing grandchildren told her later, she would not be who she was without her disability and she would not want her any other way!Her young parents are not equipped mentally for such a challenge and often leave her alone for hours at night alone when they go out drinking. Yet despite this, she credits them with helping to make her strong and patient and resilient! She is the epitome of unconditional love! Then this quadriplegic marries a paraplegic and gives birth to, and raises four children! They almost totally rebuild the homes they live in themselves, despite their physical limitations! Nothing in impossible to them and Janet finds a way to not just survive, but to Thrive! She inspires almost everyone she meets. Her oldest daughter created this book as a gift to her mother for her birthday. The story is told through Janet’s own words, those of family, friends, doctors and many more. It ended up so inspiring, Elaine edited it a little to share with others, knowing it just might help transform a few other lives! Not just for able bodied people, also for those with any kind of challenges, and the medical institutions who care for them! If you enjoy being Inspired in small or large ways, I HIGHLY recommend this book! It certainly changed how I am living my life, the very day I began reading it! Thank you Elaine!

What a strong, "beauty-FULL" lady this woman was! Writing this book had to be so many things - difficult - joyous - brave - frustrating - all consuming -- and oh so many more words which do not come to mind at the moment. Every person who thinks they have physical problems should read this book. It is a humbling experience and makes you want to applaud for Janet Barnes -- a true heroine!

Amazing story of an incredible woman By Vaneese Shaw Amazing story of an incredible woman, challenged her entire life by physical disabilities, ALL of which she overcame with the most positive attitude and her quest to live a normal life like anyone else. She achieved it all and I highly recommend this book. It will inspire you to live your life in the most positive way you can. Janet's story has proved to me that nothing is beyond your reach if you just go for it! This is definitely a five star read!

I didn't believe my doctor when she told me Tramadol worked as an opiate and could become habit forming, but after reading your story I realize it is true. Although I rarely use it, and only when having back pain that Motrin or Tylenol doesn't relieve I NOW realize it isn't worth the risk of becoming addicted. I will seek natural means for relief, even if it means spending more . I know massage therapy helps, but my I.insurance won't cover that. I can cut down on other things though and hopefully afford the healthy alternative's. Thank you again for being truthful and open about how addictive tramadol can be! May God bless you and keep you strong in your resolve to live healthful for your precious babies and for yourself! NDM

Ultram: The Ultimate Lid By Nicole Monacelli When I was addicted to Vicodin & other opiates, one of the many docs I used to prescribe for me decided to give me trauma doll instead, saying he'd no longer give me any opiates. I panicked because I knew that when I got home, if I didn't take any opiates, I'd being withdrawal. That's why addicts use, right?, to avoid at all costs, the hell of withdrawal. If you're not an addict, you can't really understand. But when I went home, & after taking some tramadol, I had absolutely NO withdrawal symptoms! I couldn't believe it! Here I was, with no opiates in my body, with no withdrawal. I thought it was a miracle. I thought that maybe I could use the tramadol to wean myself permanently off of opiates. And I did succeed. But to this day, I can't ever again take ultram because the grace it gave my to get off opiates may work in reverse & hook me back up, cravings & all. Thanks for writing your story. Maybe it will prevent some folks from getting hooked & becoming addicts. God knows, the rooms of NA are crowded enough!

On the streets of South Philly, Nathan “Sadat” White made a name for himself. There were accolades associated with the mention of his name. When people heard Sadat was around, they immediately knew he was to be feared, but not the kind of fear most drug dealers had. He commanded respect. Sadat was fair and deliberately deadly at the same time. How else was he to survive in the streets? In the business world, Nathan later came into his own. With the help and understanding of his brother, other close family members, a select few friends, and, of course, God’s unending mercy, he is now a succeeding as a business-owner. Becoming an African-American business-owner did not come with ease. Nathan had to first overcome the stigma that followed him from his sordid criminal past – but he arrived before it was too late to turn back from death’s grip. The lesson taught in this gripping life story is: CRIME DOESN’T PAY!

The rivalries amongst different areas in the same neighborhood. You represented Philly well, of what it used to be. You proved to people that the fast lifestyle gets you no where. Grinding hard, dedication, and motivation from the right individuals will take you further in life. This was a great read. Thanks!
