How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Portrait of a Lady is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880–81 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James's most popular long novels, and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who in "affronting her destiny", finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Like many of James's novels, it is set in Europe, mostly England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James's early period, this novel reflects James's continuing interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. It also treats in a profound way the themes of personal freedom, responsibility, and betrayal. Isabel Archer, originally from Albany, New York, is invited by her maternal aunt, Lydia Touchett, to visit Lydia's rich husband Daniel at his estate near London, following the death of Isabel's father. There, she meets her cousin Ralph Touchett, her friendly invalid uncle, and the Touchetts' robust neighbor, Lord Warburton. Isabel later declines Warburton's sudden proposal of marriage. She also rejects the hand of Caspar Goodwood, the charismatic son and heir of a wealthy Boston mill owner. Although Isabel is drawn to Caspar, her commitment to her independence precludes such a marriage, which she feels would demand the sacrifice of her freedom. The elder Touchett grows ill and, at the request of his son, leaves much of his estate to Isabel upon his death. With her large legacy, Isabel travels the Continent and meets an American expatriate, Gilbert Osmond, in Florence. Although Isabel had previously rejected both Warburton and Goodwood, she accepts Osmond's proposal of marriage. She is unaware that this marriage has been actively promoted by the accomplished but untrustworthy Madame Merle, another American expatriate, whom Isabel had met at the Touchetts' estate. Isabel and Osmond settle in Rome, but their marriage rapidly sours due to Osmond's overwhelming egotism and his lack of genuine affection for his wife. Isabel grows fond of Pansy, Osmond's presumed daughter by his first marriage, and wants to grant her wish to marry Edward Rosier, a young art collector. The snobbish Osmond would rather that Pansy accept the proposal of Warburton, who had previously proposed to Isabel. Isabel suspects, however, that Warburton may just be feigning interest in Pansy to get close to Isabel again. The conflict creates even more strain within the unhappy marriage. Isabel then learns that Ralph is dying at his estate in England and prepares to go to him for his final hours, but Osmond selfishly opposes this plan. Meanwhile, Isabel learns from her sister-in-law that Pansy is actually the daughter of Madame Merle, who had an adulterous relationship with Osmond for several years. Isabel pays a final visit to Pansy, who desperately begs her to return some day, something Isabel reluctantly promises. She then leaves, without telling her spiteful husband, to comfort the dying Ralph in England, where she remains until his death. Goodwood encounters her at Ralph's estate and begs her to leave Osmond and come away with him. He passionately embraces and kisses her, but Isabel flees. Goodwood seeks her out the next day, but is told she has set off again for Rome. The ending is ambiguous, and the reader is left to imagine whether Isabel returned to Osmond to suffer out her marriage in noble tragedy (perhaps for Pansy's sake) or whether she is going to rescue Pansy and leave Osmond.

By Mary Whipple When Isabel Archer, a bright and independent young American, makes her first trip to Europe in the company of her aunt, Mrs. Touchett, who lives outside of London in a 400-year-old estate, she discovers a totally different world, one which does not encourage her independent thinking or behavior and which is governed by rigid social codes. This contrast between American and European values, vividly dramatized here, is a consistent theme in James's novels, one based on his own experiences living in the US and England. In prose that is filled with rich observations about places, customs, and attitudes, James portrays Isabel's European coming-of-age, as she discovers that she must curb her intellect and independence if she is to fit into the social scheme in which she now finds herself.Isabel Archer, one of James's most fully drawn characters, has postponed a marriage in America for a year of travel abroad, only to discover upon her precipitate and ill-considered marriage to an American living in Florence, that it is her need to be independent that makes her marriage a disaster. Gilbert Osmond, an American art collector living in Florence, marries Isabel for the fortune she has inherited from her uncle, treating her like an object d'art which he expects to remain "on the shelf." Madame Serena Merle, his long-time lover, is, like Osmond, an American whose venality and lack of scruples have been encouraged, if not developed, by the European milieu in which they live.James packs more information into one paragraph than many writers do in an entire chapter. Distanced and formal, he presents psychologically realistic characters whose behavior is a direct outgrowth of their upbringing, with their conflicts resulting from the differences between their expectations and the reality of their changed settings. The subordinate characters, Ralph Touchett, Pansy Osmond, her suitor Edward Rosier, American journalist Henrietta Stackpole, Isabel's former suitor Caspar Stackpole, and Lord Warburton, whose love of Isabel leads him to court Pansy, are as fascinating psychologically and as much a product of their own upbringing as is Isabel. As the setting moves from America to England, Paris, Florence, and Rome, James develops his themes, and as Isabel's life becomes more complex, her increasingly difficult and emotionally affecting choices about her life make her increasingly fascinating to the reader. James's trenchant observations about the relationship between individuals and society and about the effects of one's setting on one's behavior are enhanced by the elegance and density of his prose, making this a novel one must read slowly--and savor. Mary Whipple

While it is no longer my favorite James' novel, I still think it among the best novels written in the English language. The character of Isabel Archer is an indelible part of literature. The story begins with an American woman, left parentless and penniless, being discovered by an expatriate Aunt. The Aunt convinces her to go England with her so that she might meet her cousin, Ralph. Isabel eagerly agrees. She is idealistic and has always wanted to see Europe. Her aunt agrees to pay for the expenditures. Once there, Isabel falls in love with their house, Gardencourt, and grows to enjoy her frail, sweet, ironic, and funny cousin. Before Isabel knows it, she has become ensnared in a one-sided love affair with a handsome English nobleman, Lord Warburton, little knowing what to do. Despite the urgings of her aunt, Isabel rejects his proposal in the desire to wait for something better. Soon, her elderly uncle dies, but not before she charms him with her intelligence and subtle beauty. Ralph insists that his father leave Isabel a substantial fortune, so that she might be able to live as she wishes. When the uncle dies, Isabel is left with 70,000 pounds, or about 200,000 dollars. From here is where the true story begins. I will not reveal more of the plot, which unwinds slowly and with assurance. James, being a master of prose, knows how to manipulate a sentence in a multitude of ways. His lilting, ironic, verbose writing style lends class and charm to Isabel's ultimately tragic tale. Some modern readers aren't able to handle James' subtle style. Unfortunately, many of us have had to fight the effects of shortened attention spans. Reading a slow-paced and brilliantly conceived tale like this will surely help cure short attention spans. Once you begin the story, it grows on you and affects you greatly. James is difficult getting used to, but he grabs you with his excellent descriptions of passionate people. Finally, the brilliance of this book lies in its tragedy. Even though many readers can predict early on where Isabel's confidence and naivete will lead her, James makes the journey bumpy and fascinating. He also slowly injects the story with dread, as we begin to sense the true malevolence of Madame Merle's and Osmond's vicious plans. Their acts are pure Machiavellian glee. Only in the final third of the book does it become clear of the true nature of the scheming M. Merle's plans. James also leaves several important plot points until near the end of the novel. All of this leads to a long, engrossing, and sad story of a young woman "affronting her destiny", as James puts it. Rarely has so romantic or so devastating a book been written. The ending is the final kicker. Unlike the happy ending we suspect, James leaves readers with open interpretations and many possible questions regarding Isabel's TRUE feelings about men. It also most vividly presents her sexual repression and fear that dominate the entire book. James knew the reserves of the time dictated that such topics not be discussed, and he cleverly uses this theme discreetly. However, he also uses it as a sort of indictment on the times, with their lack of passion and sensuality. Many readers expect a conclusion to the story, but, as with real life, stories simply go on. The ending is perhaps the most modern thing about the book. It also makes certain readers know that Isabel's life will never be one of happiness. This is an exquisitely haunting masterpiece.

The other things a woman can do otherwise marrying By Alysson Oliveira Isabel Archer --the unforgettable protagonist of Henry James' "The Portrait of a Lady" -- says at some point that she doesn't want to begin life by marrying, and she attests there other things a woman can do. This declaration is the heart of the matter of this amazingly well executed and brilliant book. Naïve as she is, Isabel believes that in the 19th Century she would be able to enjoy her life and meet the world before getting married -- and not marrying is still a possibility. With Isabel's dilemma American writer Henry James deals with the conflict between society and individual longings. Many writers have dealt this issue -- but only a few succeeded with such grace and competence as this author. The point is that Isabel is not the only one dealing with this problem. As a matter of fact, all characters of this novel, at some point in their life have to face the society against their personal wishes.James was a master of psychological development. Not a single character in this novel is unrealistic. The cast of supporting characters is as deep as Isabel. With his talent, the writer explores the psychological conflict is a result of the society pressures against the characters beliefs -- and not a gratuitous philosophy like many writers usually do. The depth brings another pleasure in the reading of the novel.Language is usually the main barrier for contemporary readers, when it comes to classic novels. With James it is a problem that can be easily overcome. His use of language however sophisticated is not difficult. His choice of words and structures are conscious and beautiful. The first chapters tend to be read slowly, but once the readers get the hang of James' prose, reading becomes an undeniable pleasure. At the same time the writer explore the psychological side of his characters; he never neglects their social conflict. In the last part of the novel, for instance, James explores the results of Isabel choices relating them to her identity -- and how one affected another. At the same time, James makes a curious choice: we never see the main events in Isabel's life, they are told to the reader after they happen. This use of ellipses happen usually when the heroine chooses to value social costume over her independence. As in most Henry James novels, he doesn't neglect the major conflict of this period of his work: Americans and Europeans. This time round the novel explore many American people living in Europe -- most characters are US born. If on the one hand, they represent the innocence, individualism and capability; the Europeans, on the other, are the sophistication, social convention and the decadence. But with so many Americans living in Europe how can one set the limits?Isabel moves from America to England and, then, to continental Europe. At each stage she loses her independency, and she realizes she cannot control her life the way she thought she could. And she realizes that there aren't many things a woman of her time could do before marrying.

In the summer of 1935, a nasty career criminal by the name of George Barrett shot to death a young FBI agent beside a flower garden in the little town of College Corner, which sat astraddle the state line between Ohio and Indiana. Indeed, when the shooting occurred, Barrett fired from Indiana and the agent fell dead in Ohio. It was only one peculiarity of the case of Barrett vs. J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling agency as it struggled for supremacy over the rampaging criminal elements of the chaotic 1930s.The case made national headlines for a number of reasons: the Cincinnati agent, Nelson Klein, was the first FBI agent to be killed in the line of duty; his killer, Barrett, a one-time Kentucky moonshiner who had killed his own mother, was only the second man tried under a new federal statute that made the murder of a government agent a federal offense-and the first to be executed. Even the execution itself was novel, for the verdict was death by hanging, and Indiana used electrocution, which necessitated bringing in the famous "human hangman," Phil Hanna-a story in himself-who dismantled an Illinois gallows and reassembled it in Indianapolis, expressly for George Barrett. The G-Man and the Diamond King: A True FBI Crime Story of the 1930s is not only the story of two men whose paths crossed in a backyard shootout with tragic results, but it is, too, the story of one of America's most dangerously exciting decades and the birth of modern crime-fighting.Even the story behind the story itself was captivating, for it began when the author, former Special Agent William Plunkett, stood in a Southgate, Kentucky, cemetery for Nelson Klein's memorial, held nearly seventy-five years after Klein's death. Overcome with melancholia, Plunkett took on Klein as his personal case: who was Klein, his life ended almost before it began; who was this man Barrett; and how did they end up tragically in a College Corner backyard?Plunkett's tenacious unraveling of this long-forgotten case brings to life a colorful and compelling American period in which the headlines belonged, at least briefly, to the criminals and not their captors, and his all-too-human story reminds us of history's sorrowful resonances.

Woods An excellent read as Mr. Plunkett walks us through the crime and social make-up of the gangland era of the 1930s. He effectively weaves anecdotal and very interesting pieces of history into the killing of FBI agent Nelson B. Klein by car thief and career criminal George Barrett. Throughout the story are peeks behind the scenes of how the fledgling Bureau of Investigation transformed itself into the FBI along with some of the Bureau's internal workings. It may be more than ironic, that perhaps for the first time in law-enforcement history, an officer was killed in one state yet the fatal shot, fired from a mere twenty-two feet away, placed the killer in another state. Agent Klein was shot in Ohio, but Barrett was prosecuted, convicted and executed in Indiana. The only reason "The G-Man" didn't get five-stars was because it was such a compelling, well-told story, that it left the reader wanting to learn more.

Tracy Well researched book documenting the relationship between a career criminal and law enforcement that had tragic results. The backdrop for the story is the turbulent period populated by the somewhat celebrated American gangsters of the 1930's era and those fighting these criminals, including an organization in it's infancy, the FBI.

Fast-paced, easy read; endnotes and underlying stories particularly interesting. Should be added to reading list of any college professor teaching criminal justice/criminology.

Prodigy. Iconoclast. Genius. Exile. Orson Welles remains one of the most discussed figures in cinematic history. In the centenary year of Welles's birth, James Naremore presents a revised third edition of this incomparable study, including a new section on the unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind . Naremore analyzes the political and psychological implications of the films, Welles's idiosyncratic style, and the biographical details--both playful and vexing--that impacted each work. Itself a historic film study, The Magic World of Orson Welles unlocks the soaring art and quixotic methods of a master.

The Magic World of Orson Welles, by James Naremore

Review "The most perceptive study of Welles's art.--Andrew Sarris "Naremore's book, with its wealth of background and close commentary, is certainly the best study of Welles."--Tag Gallagher, Film Comment Naremore is not simply pandering to the movie buff's passion for unconsidered and inconsiderable trifles, but revealing that it's possible to go on where most Wellesian researchers have stopped.-- Sight and Sound "It may, along with a small handful of other books, help to change the standards of scholarship and critical sophistication we apply to writing on film. It is patient, intelligent, scrupulously researched, and yet it is never solemn. Absolutely compelling on the more technical aspects of Welles's films."--Michael Wood, Washington Post

About the Author James Naremore is Chancellors' Professor Emeritus at Indiana University. His books include On Kubrick, The Films of Vincente Minnelli, More than Night: Film Noir in Its Contexts, Acting in the Cinema, Sweet Smell of Success , and An Invention without a Future: Essays on Cinema

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. One of the very best books yet on the cinema of Orson Welles By Muzzlehatch Certainly a must for any studious Orson Welles fan, Naremore's sympathies in this book lie pretty close to my own - he sees Welles as an independent "auteur", unconventional but not an avant-garde, and someone whose work, far from declining after his first young success with "Citizen Kane" continued to grow, change, and in some respects improve. If your feelings are at all similar - or you want to be convinced - of course I can highly recommend it. He focuses almost entirely on Welles' work, not his life, and within that still-wide area concentrates specifically on five films ("Citizen Kane", "The Magnificent Ambersons", "Touch of Evil", "The Trial", and "Chimes at Midnight") which are arguably the master's most important contributions to cinema. I disagree to a large extent with his views on "The Trial" but he's probably seen the film many more times than I have, and under better conditions -- certainly he makes me eager to get back and watch those Welles films that I've not seen so many times again and again. My favorite sections are probably those on 'Ambersons', a film I probably overrate but that Naremore offers some convincing arguments both for and against, and 'Chimes at Midnight'.There are briefer discussions on Welles' other films as director, though curiously nothing at all on "Filming Othello" which may have at the time of this 2nd edition of the book (1985) not been listed as having been directed by Welles. Very little here on Welles' work as an actor (except in the film he also directed); some discussion on his radio work and incomplete films. In any case, one of the very top books on Welles' work to date, most strongly recommended.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The best critical study of Welles By Joseph McBride It's good to see a new updated edition of James Naremore's classic study of Orson Welles -- the best critical study of Welles ever written. There are some revisions and a thoughtful new introduction, "Orson Welles at 100." Naremore has a way of getting to essential aspects of Welles's staggeringly complex career and analyzing them in depth. He deals with aspects often slighted, such as Welles's keen interests in politics and education (some of the leads to these topics were revealed by Welles's FBI file, which Naremore managed to get released). I'd recommend this new edition to anyone interested in Welles, including those who have read the two earlier editions. I've been rereading older parts with pleasure. A good book has that way of inviting you to return and remember and discover.

Having collected a ton of radio broadcasts on CD and audio cassette and having watched most of his movies, I appreciate the genius of his work. I picked up a copy of this book recently and am amazed at the amount of research put into it. An aspect of Welles rarely discussed is his magic career. At the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention this September in Aberdeen, Maryland, I plan to attend the presentation about Orson Welles and his magic career so I can watch rare footage and films with Welles, and get an even deeper insight to his trickery. Book comes recommended.

A letter penned in 1944 uncovers the powerful and heartfelt story of Helen Gregg, the daughter of Irish immigrant parents who grew up in the miseries of Hell's Kitchen during the Great Depression, and Clarence Raymond Stephenson, a young aspiring B-17 pilot raised in the small, struggling city of Ironton, Ohio. Fate brings them together in New York's Central Park in 1942. From the moment their eyes first met, they knew their lives would never be the same. This captivating and poignant story of their struggles and romance, his exploits as a highly decorated B-17 pilot during World War II, and the tragedy that tears them apart, will inspire you while tugging at your heart. With sensitivity and grace, Ray O'Conor reveals a secret about the dashing and brave young aviator who stole Helen's heart, and he divulges a promise that Helen made to Raymond in the summer of 1942 that she had to keep, no matter how long or how hard it might be to fulfill. Theirs is a compelling story of two ordinary people who led extraordinary lives during the most tumultuous period in history.

Meg was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia when she was 22 years old. She struggled to read dense medical journals and scholarly articles to learn more about her ITP. What was missing from the ITP conversation was information from other patients, about what immune thrombocytopenia was really like. In 2012, Meg set up ITPANDME. Six years later, it’s one of the largest ITP blogs in the world. Meg has been writing about ITP for more than 6 years, has heard hundreds of patient stories and answered many questions about ITP life from patients and parents. HOW TO HEAL A BRUISE is an honest account of her journey with ITP, as well as practical advice for living with ITP and information from some of her most popular articles. This book takes you through the stages of ITP from coming to terms with your diagnosed to finally accepting and thriving with ITP, what to expect while living with ITP and how to make sure it doesn’t take over your life. A destination for thousands of opera lovers every year and the anchor of Santa Fe's thriving arts scene, the Santa Fe Opera owes its existence to the vision and hard work of one man: John O'Hea Crosby (1926-2002), who created the company when he was only thirty years old and guided its fortunes for the next forty-five years. This book, the first in-depth exploration of Crosby's career, shows how the Opera reflected his passions for music and the arts.

A Vision of Voices depicts the many sides of Crosby--a dreamer and tough-minded businessman, an artistic explorer and conservative programmer, and a competent conductor and sharp critic. His devotion to quality and his obsessive oversight bore an enduring harvest that forever changed Santa Fe, the state of New Mexico, and the operatic world.

A Vision of Voices: John Crosby and the Santa Fe Opera, by Craig A. Smith

Review

"Craig Smith's welcome new book A Vision of Voices is a revealing biography of John O'Hea Crosby."--Albuquerque Journal

"Santa Fe Opera's distinguished history of Strauss productions is examined, along with a great deal else, in Craig A. Smith's detailed and readable study."--Chicago Tribune

"Smith, an arts writer for the Santa Fe New Mexican for twenty years, has exhaustively documented his work, and he certainly brings to life a fascinating and perplexing character. This is an important book about an important figure in American cultural history."--Dallas Morning News

"Splendid. . . . In this meticulously researched, handsomely produced biography, Smith's style is admirably direct and unfettered."--Opera

"Smith can't get inside Crosby's head, but he does the next best thing, and without whitewashing any of Crosby's unpleasant characteristics, he manages to convey how, in spite of them, this difficult man was able to enlist fellow believers in pursuit of a singular vision."--OPERA NEWS

"Written with access to [The Santa Fe Opera's] extensive files (including correspondence), Smith's book provides a well-paced, intimate, insight-rich look at Crosby's formative years, his 40-plus years as [The Santa Fe Opera's] general director, and his legacy."--New Mexico Magazine

"Whether the reader is deeply ensconced in art music of a neophyte interested in how the other half lives, Smith's book is a perfect summertime ticket to a program both profound and pleasant."--Weekly Alibi

"An authoritative and exhaustive examination of John Crosby--the musician, the visionary, the impresario, the man--and his magnum opus, the Santa Fe Opera. Written in a style as lyrical as its subject matter, A Vision of Voices: John Crosby and the Santa Fe Opera is indispensable reading for anyone who has experienced (or only dreamt of) the enchantment of the Santa Fe Opera."--Juliana Gondek, professor of voice and opera studies, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music

A wonderful, entertaining account chronicling one the arts world's master achievements, the Santa Fe Opera By Kevin Bothwell This is a beautifully written biography, impeccably organized yet never dry. Craig Smith has done a masterful job, interspersing within the text of the narrative excerpts from personal correspondence and memos of John Crosby that range from the sublime (nuances of musical performance) to the hilariously mundane (parking lot maintenance and grocery shopping.) Exhaustively researched and complete; a joy to read, from beginning to end, and an important resource for anyone involved in the production of live musical performance.

A Fanatic for Perfection By rwu Of interest primarily to lovers of opera and especially those familiar with the Santa Fe Opera, this is a detailed story of the life of an enigmatic man, very difficult to deal with and fanatic for perfection. He created the Santa Fe Opera, restored it when destroyed by fire and developed it into one of the leading sites for opera today. A very valuable reference work.

Autor poeme, Admir ef.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A Classic! By JoxBox I was given this book from my neighbor donating their kid books to my child. I hadnt noticed it until I was tired of reading "The Snoring Monster" for the 57th time and picked up this one. It was so easy to read and had a great moral to it! The ideas in it are simple yet imaginative. I am able to read and REread this book many times without getting tired of it. If you dont have it on your bookshelf you should! PS: It doesnt look like it's printed anymore so I'd try Ebay! :) Good luck! Worth the search for sure!

By Availar James Barbapapa (meaning Cotton Candy in French) is both the title character, and name of the "species" of said character, of a series of children's books written in the 1970s by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor, who resided in Paris, France. You can still purchase the books and DVD's in Europe (or through Amazon.fr - available in French or Amazon.co.jp with DVD's available in French/English/Japanese, make sure to get a multi-region DVD player). The story is always educational and there is always a message: to protect the earth, the animals, nature. One of the most positive books for children ever created! Barbapapa was and still is a huge hit in France, Belgium and Japan. Unfortunately, Barbapapa was never really distributed in the USA. If you want to bring up your children with a positive and peaceful message, you should give Barbapapa a try! One of the most undiscovered gems in children's literature. Barbapapa is the best!
