Quick guidebook for Oakland, CA By mavaldellon Even though I've lived in the bay area most of my life, it's still interesting to find different spots to go to and check out as well as see which spots I do know make a "top list". What I love about this book is that it gives you the basics you need - place name, short description, and address (websites listed aren't always correct as a lot of the places have repeated websites for other companies). It's quick to go through, easy to read, and covers a lot of ground in such a short guide. Aside from the already mentioned repeat website addresses though, there were a few repeat sites mentioned (O.co, Children's Fairyland, and Lake Merritt) and a few misspellings, so one star off for an otherwise great guide.

A+++ By Stacey I've purchased a few different guides by this author and again was very pleased with the layout and how easy and quick it is to read. I've been to Oakland once before but by no means feel like I know this unique place. There are lots of visuals in the guide and has some really great recommendations for top attractions and places to eat. It's also much easier to read than trying to search for info on the net and having to read through all the reviews on trip advisor. One thing it does lack is hotel suggestions but I guess most people turn to the same agencies or online websites to book accommodation anyway. Great to have handy if you're considering doing a trip to this part of California. Highly recommend!

This quick-to-flip through guide truly does reveal to you the top spots, though, I didn’t visit them all. Nogueira has gone out of his way to make sure this guy is professionally organized so that you can go through it quickly without feeling as though you’re getting exhausted. As in all his guides the pictures are visually pleasing.I believe, something that would be beneficial to the readers is having some sort of transportation guide included in these books. It’s great to see where all the top spots are, its another thing getting to them.

For example according to the author she arrives in US in September of 1987. She claims that all attention goes to the younger sister by the family, as the author claims the younger sister is still in college. Where Mahtab (true name Mahasti) graduated from university in June of1987.

By J.A.Warden In an age where the very word “hero” has become hopelessly devalued, it is a great pleasure to read Perry Smith’s book about a man who was a genuine hero in both peace and war and whose life itself was emblematic of the best of American values.Jimmie Dyess is the only man ever awarded both the Carnegie Medal and the Medal of Honor—the former a civilian award for saving a life at great personal risk and the latter for conspicuous bravery above and beyond the call of duty. The first occurred when, at the age of 19, he saved a young woman from drowning in heavy surf off the coast of South Carolina. The second, the Medal of Honor, he received posthumously as a Marine Corps lieutenant colonel battalion commander for his actions in wresting the tiny Pacific island of Roi Namur from the Japanese to open the grand offensive across the Central Pacific.In addition to the details of these two acts of great heroism, author Perry Smith provides such a great picture of Jimmie Dyess from his birth in 1909 to his death in 1944 that I felt as though I knew the man personally and would have liked to have had him as a friend and comrade.The book, however, is far more than a simple biography. For each stage of Jimmie Dyess’s life, Perry Smith describes the context of the time which ranges from life in early 20th Century Augusta, Georgia, through the trials and tribulations of the Great Depression, to the advent of World War II including the strategic thinking which paved the way for the remarkably short time from the attack on Pearl Harbor (personally witnessed by the author) to the surrender of Japan. Annis Perry Smith is a great leader, writer and presenter in the first place. Jimmie Dyess was truly unique and his story needed to be told. To have it told by the son-in-law that never met the man and to have it told so well makes this book a real joy. This story is not just about Jimmie. This story captures the history of the time in which Jimmie lived. Jimmie was the contemporary of my mother and father. Many of the character traits I see in Jimmie Dyess remind me of those that I loved so much about both my mother and father. Jimmie represents a generation of people who rose to the occasion to save the world. In terms of what we think about today, Jimmie and those men and women of that time were real true-to-life super-heroes. Read this book to learn a great story of a life well lived. Read this book to capture a feel for those times. This book is easy to read and is engaging for the reader. I have learned more from biographies than any kind of reading I do. This inspires me to write a book about my mother and father. That is now on my to-do list.

Heroism, Sacrifice, Leadership By William Reckmeyer Today’s world of headlines and celebrities has generally cheapened most folks’ understanding of heroism and sacrifice, so it is gratifying to learn about an American who clearly exemplified the best of both. Perry Smith’s most recent book is a well-deserved homage to the remarkable life of Jimmie Dyess, a young man from Georgia who was the only recipient of our country’s highest awards for valor – the Carnegie Medal and the Medal of Honor. The author is himself uniquely qualified to tell this story, which is clearly a labor of love and respect by someone who has both a deep personal interest in and a professional perspective on sharing his insights.Dyess was the father of Smith’s wife, so he has been familiar with bits and pieces of the story for more than half a century. In the hands of someone less capable, this book could have easily resulted in a sentimental account that would have been of little interest beyond the small circle of people who knew Dyess and his achievements. But MGen Smith’s extensive experience and expertise – as a senior military officer, popular leadership author, CNN commentator, advisor to the Kellogg National Leadership Program, and long-time official with the Congressional Medal of Honor Association – has resulted in a book that should attract attention from a much wider audience due to the broad lessons that it offers about heroism and sacrifice.In addition to Smith’s coverage of the attributes and accomplishments of LtCol Dyess, I really appreciated his ability to convey a general historical and cultural sense of the times as well as his broader discussion of the Carnegie Medal and the Medal of Honor. In today's religious climate, many of us are wondering "what the heck happened to the church?!" For all of us truth-seekers, there is a commonality in Eleanor Tomczyk's journey with American Evangelical Christianity and her exploration into why it is declining. Her experiences, and those of others she interviewed, shed a truthful and somewhat uncomfortable light on what much of the American church has become. With pithy humor, colorful stories (and language!) Tomczyk exposes some of the dirt that has been swept under the rug for decades - and challenges those of us who do want the "real thing" to keep seeking it, until we find it. Great read, loved it - couldn't put it down till I finished it!

This raw expose succeeds in its attempt to bring the spiritual journeys of the author and others to life, to life awakenings. This book brought my personal journey as a Christian who tested the deep waters of the charismatic movement back to the surface, and I thought I had buried it 25 years ago. The author shares this journey in a no holds barred revelation of what she really thought in the wake of learning that the human condition didn't sprinkle from church leadership but stormed from them. Tomczyk accomplishes this by directing her thought processes in the form of written questions and personal observations to the Lord Jesus. The brutal honesty of this book is what makes it valuable. Any Christian person that reads this book will be challenged in taking personal inventory of what is most important and what is life giving to them spiritually. While you may or may not agree with Tomczyk's conclusions she doesn't ask you to. She just calls it like she sees it. I love the book. I highly recommend giving it a read.

By Sally McDonell I just finished reading “Fleeing Oz” I sat down to read a few chapters and found myself not being able to stop until I turned the last page and read the last sentence.Your story was liberating and healing to me. It finished a healing process that was begun years ago. I was also naive and idealistic and was taken in by the “Jesus movement” of the 70’s. I thought I was apart of something pure and holy that we were all on the same path. I was wrong. I continued to look for a church for years, one after another with the same disappointing outcome.Your book is funny, irreverent and brutally truthful. If you have found yourself disillusioned hurt and disappointed in the church you need to read “Fleeing Oz” It will set you free.Thank you Eleanor for another amazing book!Sondra

Latino This is such an important topic at this time, as traditional healthcare delivery is being transformed from what we all knew it to be. With successful change comes discomfort and new challenges. Effective communication is critical to patient safety from all perspectives (i.e. - patient-to-nurse, family-to-nurse, family-to-doctor, nurse-to-nurse, nurse to doctor, and the many other service areas of a hospital that are hand-off points). While new technologies can aid effective communications, they call also produce new risks that have to be considered and mitigated. This text is written from the perspective of those who are on the front lines and deal with these challenges daily...and have worked to overcome them and share their experiences. Beth, your devotion to your craft is inspirational to us all but most importantly to the patient who puts the trust of their lives in the hands of their caregivers.

Sweet Untasted: A Record of Musical Witness is a memoir by Canadian author Fraser Sunderland. It tells the story of a group of high school pals who come together out of a common love for playing loud, aggressive music. Yet even as their bonds form and their abilities mature, timeless forces beyond their control throw the band into a life-altering crisis that would challenge even the strongest spirit. In the early 1990's, playing the drums was my noisy but private addiction. It soon became a group effort as I found myself in a band composed of some of the coolest kids from my high school's art-program. These were guys that I looked up to and I was a little stunned to find myself playing loud music with them in the basement on Friday nights. They introduced me to the wild, passionate and long-haired culture that is Heavy Metal. As we grew more confident and capable as a band, so too did I become more comfortable with my place among them. Each passing gig left us feeling more optimistic about our musical future and left me feeling empowered - capable of anything. That all changed. We performed better than ever at the Montreal show, with unity and indications of maturing skill. But the sudden transition thrust upon us the following evening wiped away our elation and empowerment in a single, silent moment.

About the Author Fraser Sunderland is a graduate of the Classical and Digital 3D Animation programs at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. He was able to apply his understanding of visual storytelling into the literary form of his writing debut; an intimate garage band memoir - "Sweet Untasted: A Record of Musical Witness". For over 15 years, he's been an active contributor to many animated projects in the television and games industries throughout Canada and the United States. Though animation pays the bills, he is most happy after work, when he has the chance to tinker in his own artistic projects. He lives in southern Ontario with his wife, fellow animator and wildlife artist Kerie Green.

Fraser Sunderland so generously took me as a reader through the hallways, bus rides and first stage appearances that he lived as a teen and budding musician; all leading to the very unfortunate turn of events that makes this story surprising, painful and unique. Female and 40, this was an express ride back to « teenland » and a rare peek into the minds and hearts on the boys side of the classroom. My friends were in a very promising band in highschool and lost their super talented rebel guitar player after he got hit by a car on his motorcycle. His girlfriend was my classmate and he was my brothers peer. I can relate. I think this book will bring back old feelings and memories for a lot of people.

However, it's the perspective given by the passing of time that you see all the layers, all the notes, all breaks and flourishes that make a life. It's the pressure and time that a diamond does blossom. Great story from an old man taking a look at his life.

Interesting and Fun read By Holly Richardson In the prologue to "On the Road with the Oak Ridge Boys, author Joe Bonsall's wife Mary calls the group a phenomenon. Their long career is certainly testimony to that, and the stories that Joe relates in this book give an inside look into how that phenomenon came to be and remains a relevant force in our culture to this day.I will admit to being a longtime friend of Joe Bonsall's, and having witnessed firsthand many of the things he describes in the book. However this is not just a tome for friends and fans. If you are at all interested in the history of one of the most successful music groups of our times, you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in a behind the scenes glimpse of what life is like on the road, you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy reading something that makes you smile and even laugh out loud, you will enjoy this book. It will pull at your heartstrings, stir your patriotism, and renew your faith that with hard work, determination, and treating people right, great success can come from humble beginnings. Plus, it's just great fun to read.

I couldn't wait to start reading it, and after I got started it was hard to put down...I never wanted it to end! Joe Bonsall is an amazing writer! I really hope he has another book in the future....whether it's another book about the Oak Ridge Boys...or about anything else!This book is really something special! I would have given it a 10 star rating, if that was an option!

Simply put, Joe Bonsall is a man who loves God, Family, and Country. He is a man who clearly walks next to Jesus. Many people put words on paper and that's all that they are, "words." Joe is the real deal. I know this first hand. He's an amazing man and friend. This book shows on so many different levels all he and the Oak Ridge Boys have done for the world....not just with music, but the way they have treated their fellow man. What they have done collectively will live in the hearts of people from now until the end of time. On the Road with The Oak Ridge Boys is full of energy, warmth, faith and friendship. You will love it. Joe is an incredible writer. Talent and the Good Lord definitely live inside his heart.

Well Balance short biography - an easy and enjoyable read By Don Schwab Got this book about 10 days ago, because I have never been disappointed in any of the books I have read from this publisher. I am running out of new ways to show my appreciation for these short, well written books. As with many of the others I have read, you could read this book and be well satisfied with what information is presented and come away pretty well informed. I find these books and this one in particular, since I have read little about Fr. Benedict/Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, a starting point for further reading. The bibliography in the back presences further sources of information.

I enjoy everything this publisher publishes By Harold Ivie I enjoy everything this publisher publishes; every time, whatever I've selected from the large library, is always just what I wanted. Same here with my dear Pope Benedict. I've read several of his encyclicals and developed a special warm spot in my heart for this saintly man; some called 'Gods Rottweiler'. Here through the succinct Wyatt North style I've come to a deeper, better understanding of this holy man. I love him...and Wyatt North Publishing too. Thank you so much for this insightful tome; a pure delight and I enjoyed it immensely.

About the Author Stephen Bloch is clinical psychologist and Jungian analyst in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a founding member of the Southern African Association of Jungian Analysts and has served on its Executive Committee, Assessment and Review, Ethics and Library Committees. He has given training seminars on transference and countertransference, dream interpretation, Klein, Winnicott, Bion and Eigen, the psychoanalytic frame, music and psychoanalysis, embodiment, psychotherapy with the meditating patient. He has published papers and reviews and co-edited (with Paul Ashton) Music and Psyche (2010).Loray Daws is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist currently in private practice in British Columbia, Canada. He is founding member of the South African and British Columbia Masterson Institutes as well as a faculty member of the International Masterson Institute in New York where he completed a post-graduate training program in the disorders of the self. He has published articles on dreaming, psychosomatic disorders (burning mouth syndrome and eating disorders) and the disorders of the self in journals such as the International Journal of Psychotherapy, Issues in Psychoanalytic Psychology, South African Rorschach Journal and Clinical Counselling and Contemporary Psychotherapy. He has supervised and taught in South Africa, Canada, the United States, Australia and Turkey and currently serves as assistant editor for the Global Journal of Health Sciences.James S. Grotstein was Professor of Psychiatry, U.C.L.A School of Medicine, and a training and supervising analyst at the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute and at The Psychoanalytic Center of California. He blithely and blindly goes where he knows he cannot and certainly should not. He takes countless risks that routinely land people in horrific jails. And still he manages to come back to tell the story. All his life he has had one small passion – to visit and understand every country in the world. It took him 50 years, and toward the end, his age pointed itself out to him. But he did it, and he tells an enthralling story. He is humorous, self-aware enough to be self deprecating, and reflective. He took the low road, sleeping in tents and hostels, making contacts with the locals in every nation. He learned their ways, earned their co-operation and often their respect, and could evaluate them and their context.All the countries of the world is an absurd, constantly changing, arbitrary number. Even as he checked them off, he had to go back and visit again when they changed. For instance, Czechoslovakia split into two countries, Yugoslavia into a battalion. The inequality is also absurd. Canada, the second largest country on earth, counts as one, just like Monaco, which he walked across. Still, it makes for a very eventful, rewarding and fulfilling life.This was no cakewalk. Podell got into trouble with authorities, airlines, police, animals, rivers and natives wherever he ventured. Quickwitted, he persevered and innovated, and made it back every time. The last time, he even proposed at the airport, and after a lifetime of girlfriends who never seemed to last more than one trip, he married and presumably settled down (somewhat).His observations are clear, balanced and fair. Unintentionally, he has pointed out the absurdity of the visa system, where some are permitted to enter or leave, and some not. Sometimes for multiple entry and sometimes for limited days. And depending on what country you’re arriving from, you may or may not enter. Or even be allowed to change planes. And all to no purpose. None.It’s a romp and an education, and has changed my own bucket list.We couldn’t do it, but I’m glad he did.David Wineberg

Too Much of Nothing By Erik_In_Vegas This book started out pretty good & is well written, by a former adventure magazine editor & writer.It soon became an un-enjoyable chore to read, because it leads nowhere except to the fact that he visits all the separate countries of the world.There's no human growth or development. No grand conclusion or learned philosophy.Basically, all he seems to learn is that he's become too old to pick-up or flirt with young girls at the Youth Hostels. A fact he rectifies, at the end of the book, by marrying a Russian woman 49 years younger than him. (photo provided, of course).It's just the story of a guy, with money to spend, going to a bunch of lousy places to try getting bragging rights as 'The World's Most Interesting Man'.I didn't learn much from his adventures, nor enjoy his non-evolution. It's basically 50 years of self-centered travel & mishaps, with no underlying story.I seriously learned more & got more 'travel enjoyment' reading the ('Dog Days') book about the guy who drove the Weiner Mobile. No lie or exaggeration.

Around the world in 50 years By Clare O'Beara Editing travel magazine Argosy, the author teamed up with a reporter and photographer and decided to take the longest land journey that could be managed around the world, in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. This was in 1964 and all kinds of troubles and wars were under way; one photographer was killed by the Viet Cong in Cambodia. Pakistan declared war while the team travelled through the country and all foreign journalists became suspect as possible spies, so that the author was almost lynched.The bugs, leeches and minefields posed their own problems, reminding me of Len Beadell's books about carving Australia's great long roads out of the outback. The people were by turns devious, thieving, hardworking and keen to buy women travelling with the team.This book details only the more remote and hard to enter countries that the author has visited during his life, scattered over many years, as he claims to have visited every country in the world, seven of which no longer exist. The stories come so thick and fast that it is hard to take them all in at one sitting, so I recommend reading the book over a few stages in order to appreciate not only each journey, but the kind of life that would result from this constant travelling. I recommend this read to any armchair traveller or anyone with a thirst for adventure.

By loli Me compre el libro en papel porque me lo habia recomendado una buena amiga y la verdad es que no me ha defaudado. Al principio te crees que es mas de la misma historia de amor del tipico millonario, pero tras el primer capitulo, te das cuenta que no es asi.Una historia fuera de lo comun,donde se mezcla la ciencia ficción y una historia de amor. Por eso no entiendo como algunas dicen que no se creen la historia... a ver que es ciencia ficción, su nombre propio lo indica. Para mi una historia que no podia dejar de leer, con sentimientos y pensamientos muy profundos.
