Comments From Other Readers

“I love anything dealing with England. In my studies on the country, the name Winston Churchill is legendary. While I was looking for some quick information on him to do a report, I came across this book. I loved that not only did I get information on his life; I also got information about some of his inspirational words. It wasn’t too heavy of a book, as some biographies will take a while to go through, but gave me a start in the direction I needed to head in with my report. Really an excellent book!” Amber – Massachusetts (US) “Winston Churchill has to be without compare, the major statesman in the 20th century. This book provides a wonderful review of his charismatic career and his historic speeches, particularly during the Second World War where his words may have perhaps changed a nation. He was truly an inspiration to all that have read his words. He makes me immensely proud to be British.” David – Manchester (UK) Tags: Churchill, England, World War II, WWII, oration, speeches, statesmen, Parliament, inspiration

He was a military man, Prime Minster, and morale booster for the people of England and the world when they needed it most. "The Inspirational Life of Winston Churchill" is strong at relating his biographical background with key traits that made him a successful leader and notable figure of the 20th century. With his strength in writing and public speaking, some readers may it realize that he was not a great study. He was controversial and had many disagreements with his colleagues, but he also proved that his insight was often spot on and the risks he took were worth it. His courage and enthusiasm are models of attitude from which we can learn. While we may not all become leaders during major wars, we can rally our colleagues and family, make allies with those we may not always agree with, and take risks when we need to.

One can learn a lot from their lives. To quote the author “this book pays tribute to Winston Churchill's greatness” and yes he was really one of the most influential politician in 20th century.I read this book in one sitting, and although it is short it contains all important information about life and work of Winston Churchill. This man had such an interesting life. This is book for all who are looking for short but up to point insight into life and career of this great 20th century figure.

A very well written book By Tania The name Winston Churchill carries a lot of weight, it stands for a nation, its people and is the face of one of the most terrifying battles that took place during modern times. A book on him therefore needs to be able to truly focus on his considerable achievements. And this book takes up the challenge and has been able to fulfill it.Though the book introduces itself as a short bio, yet when you read it you will realize that it is packed with information and with well researched facts. It’s not a book that just chronicles his life story but it effectively highlights important events in his life which shaped his outlook, his thoughts and views especially political ones. Each of the events is carefully chosen amongst others to show their relevance in his life, right from his childhood and family life to his rise as a statesman and his political career.

My first book was written during 31 years. During the 4 years from February 2011,until the summer of 2015, I went through a fast and deep development with many realizations; both spiritually, energetically, religiously and professionally. The main realizations were the following; • The hands are highly spiritual organs. They can, when the fingertips meet the blood, as in pulse diagnosis, be transformed to highways into the spiritual world, and serve as organs of initiation. • The pulse-diagnosis is not a technique, it is a state of consciousness. • The changes in the pulse are not happening in the physical world, but in the spiritual. • To be able to detect pulse changes we have to be in the spiritual world. • To enter the spiritual world we have to separate either our thinking/feeling/willing or the elements of the physical world as height/width/depth/time. • Working with pulse-diagnosis is a way of initiation into the spiritual world. • Most diseases (80%) in children and animals are projections from the “grown-ups”, the parents. • The projections are real pathological entities, real pathological information, real “demons”. • All symptoms (diseases) are “pathological” information, and such information is not lost easily (no information is ever lost). • When we treat the excess after ordinary methods (the theory of the 5-star elemental Chinese theory) we just translocate the disease, the “excessive pathological information”, which is mostly of Yang (astral) nature. • When we treat the deficiency after the control theory of the 5-star elemental Chinese theory (as lectured by me before) we often just translocate the disease, the “deficient pathological information”, which is mostly of Yin (etheric) nature. • If we treat the middle, the equilibrium, the mid-point between excess-Yang-astral and deficiency-Yin-etheric, we will not translocate the disease, but dissolve it. • The so-called pathological structure is a living entity, which in old times was called a demon. o The Yin structures were called Ahrimanic demons. o The Yang structures were called Luziferic demons. • The 5-element star system of Chinese medicine is just a construct relating to the treatment of excess and deficiency, and do not function well in finding and treating the midpoint, and therefore must be revised. • The 6-star system is better to treat and find the midpoint. • The mid-point is related to the Christ-consciousness, and may be found by ways of; o Pulse; the Christ energy, where it is felt. o Pulse, the controller of the deficiency relating to the 5-star (father of the father of the symptoms) o Pulse; the midpoint of the triangle, the trinity. o Anatomically; the bodily midpoint between excess (Luzifer) and deficiency (Ahriman). o Cranio-sacrally; the midpoint at the head between excess (Luzifer) and deficiency (Ahriman). Thus, in the summer of 2015 I understood that my book on alternative medicine needed an update, a revision. All the above mentioned understandings had dawned on my mind and spirit. I felt that I had so much new to tell the world. I realized how much work it would take to update my 750 pages book, and did not look forward to that immense work. The inspiration to write a new book came to me on awakening on the 3rd of September 2015, 5 o'clock in the morning in Germany, after travelling to the old mystery places in Ireland and meeting a spiritual person that freed me from old thoughts. I suddenly understood that it was better to write a new book on spiritual medicine, rather than update the old one. I am happy here to be able to present the result of that inspiration.

I don't talk about it to any great lengths around here By Jake Cook I don't talk about it to any great lengths around here, but I've struggled with anxiety and depression in different ways and at different levels of intensity since I was a teenager. It largely went unaddressed -- and though I struggled, I thought was mostly doing okay not addressing it -- until the summer I turned 26. That’s when I had a full-scale meltdown that rendered me, essentially, a non-functional human being for the better part of two years. Only a few of my closest friends and two therapists (one completing her practicum in the student services department of my grad school and, after graduation nixed the free counseling benefits, the woman who saved my life) really know how bad it got for me. But believe me when I say it was very, very bad.But reading this book turned out to be one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. I woke up early one Saturday morning and took a cup of coffee, my iPod, and my cat out onto the balcony, read the first half of the book in one shot, and cried at how real it was. This is a deeply personal book, so it primarily emphasizes one man's experience, but it’s also packed with research. It’s very-well written, honest, and thoughtful. Many of the negative reviews I’ve read address my initial concern that it would not reflect my experience with anxiety, but I found that I appreciated how Dixon used his own personal story without dismissing the experiences of others. I personally found it wonderfully validating and highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, time is sometimes unfair because we exert our best effort to achieve specific goals, but then sometimes we fail in succeeding. In real life, we don't get all we want and that is the time I get depressed; however, I am so happy that I can handle my emotions, and this book is also a big aid for me. I appreciate how the author shared his experiences in solving problems, which is actually motivational for everyone who is going through tough situations, I enjoyed reading this book it is very inspiring and I can feel the optimism from it.

Whenever we are locked in the world of fear, hatred and depression, we cannot get any productive, happy, nor realize our worth. The book has different tips and strategies that can help us overcome it. It also provides stories that tell how one did it successfully! I do believe that it should always be mind over matter. It will all pass.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

This fascinating life story—which starts when Richard Laster, age 14, fled his home in Vienna to escape Hitler’s invasion of Austria—is full of memorable twists and turns on his route to America and eventually becoming “the most memorable man” at General Foods. All this is reflected during a span bounded by the outbreak of World War II in Europe followed by Pearl Harbor, V-Day, the growth of suburbia, Silicon Valley and the numerous sociological changes in America. …And It Went So Fast is also loaded with well-tested nuggets of business advice, including the evergreen value of goal-setting. With the United States as his first goal, Richard and his family stopped in London to wait for their visas. During this time learning English was his priority, as well as preparing to take the examination for the University of London. Much to his surprise, and to the surprise of his parents, he passed the exam and that “success” gave him a sense of confidence that he needed as he faced the future. After entry into the United States, Richard proceeded with studying for a degree in chemical engineering which he received from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon graduating, he became employed as a Junior Chemical Engineer at General Foods. His career at GF—from his entry level position to President of Maxwell House, Executive Vice President and a Director of the Corporation—did not follow a straight line. General Foods is a consumer-marketing company and Richard’s background in science and engineering was not the normal background that qualified him for progression in the company. He credits his acceptance into the University of London with giving him confidence initially and, as opportunities presented themselves at General Foods, he opted to leave his comfort zone in science and pursue new challenges and goal-setting on his way to the “executive suite.” After retiring from General Foods, he led two start-up companies in the exciting field of biotechnology, one in the agricultural space and the other in the health field. Along with his wife and two children, Richard Laster always cared for the world around him, and he participated in numerous community activities such as President of the Chappaqua School Board, a member of the Town Board, Chairman of the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center, and on-going support of his religious institution. In his remarkable journey, Laster reached out and made many new personal and professional friends who helped him. …And It Went So Fast points out through engaging story-telling that setting a goal and developing a sense of confidence in achieving that goal are important ingredients in moving ahead in life.

By Jon Gould The book provides a breathtaking adventure about a young chemical engineer with a newly minted degree entering the halls of a blue chip food corporation and rapidly rising to the leadership. The success story results from his uncanny ability to facilitate connectivity between research, development, operations and marketing. And fostering mutual respect between management and employees. The book highlights that the author never forgot his family roots of escaping from Austria days prior to the Nazi German invasion. And unselfishly assumed major community service and government leadership responsibilities including including the important Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center.

A Memoir From The Greatest Generation By Bunny Richard Laster's memoir, ...And It Went So Fast is a must read for anyone who is curious about America in the post WWII years. It follows an ambitious young refugee's dream of creating a full and happy life and the roadblocks he faced in this new world. It was a time when education, ambition and loyalty were rewarded in the corporate world. Arriving in America after crossing the Atlantic Ocean, watching the ships surrounding his sinking from U-boat attacks, arriving in New York with limited English language skills, grateful to have escaped with his Jewish family from the Nazi invasion of Vienna. His memoir is truly a marvelous personal story and a history of how opportunities once existed in America for people to start a career with a great company and to one day retire from it with the knowledge of a job well done.

By healingtouch This is a much needed book with good, clear, concise information on gua sha treatment. Like the previous two reviewers, I am a licensed acupuncturist. In school the information provided about gua sha was minimal. This fills in the gaps and gives me another nice modality to use with clients. But it's not just for acupuncturists. The information is presented so the non-acupuncturist can understand and use it as a home treatment tool. Gua sha may be a "folk remedy" but it's also a powerful healing tool. Good graphics help with the understanding of the material.

As a Licensed Acupuncturist, I found this book to be well written with clear photos and explanations. It is written for the layperson, which is great. Even better, the author outlines the Chinese medicine explanation of Gua Sha as well as the meridians. Very well done and user friendly whether you have a background in Chinese medicine or not. The book is organized in a logical format making it easy to quickly look up are area that needs attention without digging through the entire book. Highly recommend this for anyone!

By Steph S As an acupuncturist myself, I think this is a great book, both for practitioners of acupuncture to learn more and also for the lay person who does not have a background in Chinese medicine. The book has lots of details about the history of gua sha, the channels on the body used in Chinese medical treatments, safety guidelines, techniques, and even special protocols for specific health concerns. I will definitely be using this book to sharpen my gua sha skills!

Conway As the founder and webmaster of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association museum website I've had numerous contacts with people who knew and served with Ace Cozzalio. I have spoken to his family members a number of times in order to catch a small glimpse of this bigger then life Army Aviator for presentation in our work and displays. This book is long over-due and a fitting tribute to a genuine American legend. There have been many books written by and about Helicopter veterans but few work so intently on establishing the essence of a complex man and patriot from childhood to his untimely passing. In contrast to today's "by the book" Army, in which individualism is not so welcome, Ace pioneered a path that carried with it the lives and loyalties of many who served under his command and along side him. He dynamically re-introduced the Cavalry uniform of olden times (saber, scarf and "Cav" Hat) to the challenging environment of the Vietnam conflict and not only got away with it but established what was then, at the very least, "Unauthorized" as a tradition that lives on today. There was nothing typical about this man but his is the spirit of many a well known American Warrior. Thanks to author, Rex Gooch, for adding an unforgettable volume to the archives of 20th century military history. A must read for anyone from Aviation Historians to those who research or just appreciate factual studies in leadership.

By RICH NIEDERHOF At a time when there are so few REAL heroes, REAL role models, the true story of Ace Cozzalio is heroically powerful and inspiring. Whereas our media tends to idolize our Hollywood actor “heroes” and over-paid egotistical professional athletes, this is a book of REAL acts of bravery, an exciting and accurate portrayal of a Vietnam War gunship helicopter pilot. This book does NOT get into the “justification”, the controversies, the politics of the Vietnam War but accurately tells the true story of an American Army pilot doing his job with unbelievable bravery, honor, dedication, pride, and grit...as only an American military person can perform.. This book helps bring out the true but often unrecognized fine character of the American soldier in Vietnam, an unpopular war that in reality was filled with true warriors like Ace Cozzalio. The author does a fantastic job of making a true story read like a well-written novel. Only Rex Gooch, a decorated Vietnam War Air Calvary gunship helicopter pilot himself, could write so that you feel like you are THERE flying the Loach or Huey helicopter with Ace! . The accurate details of piloting helicopters and flying so very low over the lands of South Vietnam are fantastic. It is a well-written true story of values and character-building instilled by his parents to amazing action of a low-flying Loach helicopter chasing Viet Cong as if it were A DRAGONFLY CHASING AN ANT (WOW !!!!), to an unbelievable battle saving a pinned down trapped platoon, to the flamboyant pride of old Calvary uniforms, scarfs, Stetson cowboy hats and sabre swords to a classy story of romance with a Donut Dolly!!! Better than fiction!!Frankly, a “great read”, especially for any man (emphasis intended)!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. that's how good it is By Ted Ellis From the moment I began reading ACE:THE STORY OF LT.COL.ACE COZZALIO, I could not put it down!. This book is so well written that it is truly a "page turner". I could see the action in the book just as if I was experiencing it myself, that's how good it is. Ace, the man, as the books reveals is more than just a good helicopter pilot. He is an honest, decent and charasmatic leader; a man who exemplifies all that is good about being an American Soldier committed to his duty as he saw it. From page to page I could see the character of a real man; nothing about him was phony. To use a cliche, what you see is what you get. The legend of Ace will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and, through this book, those who read about him.For anyone who is looking for a hero, I recommend looking at the life of Ace Cozzalio as written in this book. You, the reader, will appreciate the selfless sacrifice our soldiers make in the most horrible situations to keep our country safe. I expect the many veterans of the Vietnam War, and other conflicts, who read this book will treasure it as part of their life as I do. On a scale of one to five, I give this books a 10!Ted Ellis

Review 'I Malavoglia obsessed me from the moment I read it.And when the chance came I made a film of it. La Terra Trema.' Luchino Visconti

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Something Completely Different By John Burt Foster, Jr. This is a wonderful novel focused on village life in a mostly pre-literate Sicily of the 1870s. Newly united Italy wants a navy, and disrupts the life of a traditional fishing family by taking its sons. It has a family resemblance with Flaubert's great MADAME BOVARY, except there's a deeper sympathy for the dilemmas of the characters, easily sensed under the tight-lipped, objective, "realistic" narration. With great originality, a good deal of the narration is carried out through the conversations of the villagers, just as if you were there listening to the villagers chatting. One could say that this is the world Joe DiMaggio escaped by becoming a baseball star, except that there's only one character who "wants to get away," and he's not easy to identify with. Instead, the narrative gets you involved in the outlooks and feelings of the others, who can only conceive of living honorable lives and having their own house in this village in the shadow of Mount Etna.

The Mountains of California, by John Muir

Review "Mr. Muir is a nature-lover of a fine type, one of the best the country has produced."--John Burroughs

From the Inside Flap When John Muir traveled to California in 1868, he found the pristine mountain ranges that would inspire his life's work. The Mountains of California is the culmination of the ten years Muir spent in the Sierra Nevadas, studying every crag, crook, and valley with great care and contemplation. Bill McKibben writes in his Introduction that Muir "invents, by sheer force of his love, an entirely new vocabulary and grammar of the wild . . . a language of ecstasy and exuberance." The Mountains of California is as vibrant and vital today as when it was written over a century ago. This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes the photographs and line drawings from the original 1898 edition.

About the Author John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. Dickinson The question is not whether Muir is a terrific writer-but how he got that way, and secondarily, why it is important. The Mountains of California was his first book, published in 1894, and was an instant success. This book contains not just some of the best nature writing, but for its vividness, immediacy and vision some of the best writing in English in any genre. Modern Library's edition is quite special with its introduction to Muir by Bill McKibbon and about 50 illustrations, though I wished there were better maps for following the footsteps of Muir's many great narratives among the fabulous natural wonders of the Sierra.Muir succeeds in his writing in ways that Emerson and Thoreau fall short. Emerson's nature is an internal construct, almost a habit of mind. Thoreau conveys something of the immediacy of Muir in selected writing (and he, like Muir, actually immerses himself in nature itself), but his writings and especially his journals seem chaotic at times and lack a unifying vision.Muir, on the other hand, always draws the reader forward from one vision to another, each one more fantastic than the previous. My favorite passages are his descent into the Merced Glacier (in "the Glaciers"), and his description of being on the high slopes during a major windstorm when he climbs a swaying pine to get an even better look. His description of the Giant Sequoia is a work of great subtlety and richness--I seriously doubt you will find a more enchanting description of the two California Species of Sequoia anywhere. This work abounds with rich and sensuous passages that are descriptions of actual experiences in over a decade of exploring, mostly alone, in the high Sierras. The strength of Muir's writing is based on the depth of his emotional experience of nature-his very personal relationship to the whole and many specific animals, trees and features of the landscape. You would say that it's mystical except for the fact that it's very sensual and very concrete. Muir employs religious language though he never becomes ethereal or abstract as Emerson sometimes does. The reader is always right in the immediate moment of the present listening to Muir's voice. And that suggests another reason why this writing is great. Muir's Scottish heritage (he was born in Dunbar Scotland in 1838) has provided him with a rich, luxurious and slightly exotic vocabulary for describing all the natural wonders that he sees, feels, and hears. It's a voice like no other in American writing.Of course, the reason it is important is because of what Muir spawned through his vision and experience-he was the true creator of the conservation movement leading to modern environmentalism. I should say that this work is all luxurious description and scientific discussion and rarely becomes didactic or preachy-as modern environmental writers sometimes do. It is not fashionable to think that one person of vision can create so much;but it's hard to conclude otherwise about Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, after reading this work.

As the only other Muir book I've read (at this writing) is Travels in Alaska, I cannot comment on this, other than to say that I enjoyed this book a great deal. From almost any vantage point in California, whether near or on a distant horizon, there are mountains. A fact not lost on Muir, whose sense of wonder and love of life endear him to his readers."God's glacial-mills grind slowly, but they have been kept in motion long enough in California to grind sufficient soil for a glorious abundance of life ... In so wild and so beautiful a region [was spent my day], every sight and sound inspiring, leading one far out of himself, yet feeding and building up his individuality."Muir was the consummate man in nature. Anyone who is indifferent to Muir's writing may simply be indifferent to wonderment itself. I have no doubt that if Muir were placed in a room with the great kings and generals and tycoons and empire builders of history, he would appear singularly as a man among men. Unimpressed with their pomp and bluster over rotting empire, he might soon command more attention than they, and many would be happily listening to Muir in spite of their self importance. Why? He would have the most interesting insights, offered poetically and in a most humble and charming way. ... (in fact Muir was sought out by the great politicians and philosophers of his day).If you like mountains, if you like California, if you like trees and glacier-fed streams, you will like this book.

By Jerry Guild As a Birder, I spend a lot of time travelling outdoors.I also have a large collection of Bird and Nature books and spend a great amount of time in them. For pure enjoyment;I found this one of the finest.Muir was as one of America,s greatest partakers in and writers of Nature and Enviroment and was in every way as much a giant as the Sequois and Mountains he wrore about.I read this Classic a short time before I visited Yosemite National Park and having done so,encreased my enjoyment and appreciation immeasurably. After many years of reading,I have come to the conclusion ,that I tend to like books about people I would liked to have known,or to spend some time with. What an experience it would have been to have known and travelled with Muir. While that is impossible;at least we have his writings and can dream.
