Excerpt from The Semantic Sources of the Words for the Emotions in Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and the Germanic Languages: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Comparative Philology, General Linguistics, and Indo-Iranian PhilologyIt is the purpose of this investigation to trace and to interpret the semantic history of the words for the emotions in some of the Indo-European languages, and to establish a comprehensive classification of their sources and their shifts in meaning.I believe that, except for certain difficulties mentioned on page 9, the intention has been realized. At any rate, the wider heads marked by capital letters (A-G) and by Roman numerals will accommodate any more specific developments that may have failed to appear in the material to which I have limited myself. So words with an earlier meaning 'smile' for which I have, contrary to expectation, not succeeded in establishing a development to 'be pleased, or so' will readily fall into group B. V, and so forth.Such an attempt at collective interpretation, if carried out on a large scale, is bound to clarify the history of the meaning of the individual words, because shifts that occur independently in separate words and in separate languages must be due to constant psychological factors, in this case, to the nature of the emotions and their relation to the rest of consciousness. To point out these psychological factors, as I attempt to do, is to explain the development of the meaning.It goes without saying then that it was necessary to give a brief sketch of the subject matter which the words under consideration come to denote, i.e. the emotions. This was all the more imperative because strongly divergent opinions are held in regard to the psychology of the emotions, which are decisive in the interpretation of many shifts. On the whole, I accept Wundt sposition as represented in his Vorlesungen über die Menschen- und die Tierseele (not his altered attitude in the last edition of his Physiologische Psychologie), with the modification suggested by Titchener, Feeling and Attention, p. 160ff. This offers the most satisfactory basis for the explanation of the semantic changes recorded in the words for the emotions. Journey from darkness to light By LIZ NINER I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway.This is a memoir of a woman's trip from a really dark place to one with personal light. I am happy for for how far she has come and can only wish her the strength to continue her journey.One another note ... there is a really powerful message at the end of the book for those who try to love someone with addiction. Read of the frustration, self-disillusionment and despair that Grace endured and try to find a better way.

Kadish This is a very powerful story told in an extremely honest and candid fashion by a woman who has been there and back . . . fractured family, drugs/alcohol, running the streets, relationships with celebrities, issues with romantic partners. But mostly I saw this as the story of a woman with all the cards stacked against her who came through, and ultimately triumphed over, adversity. Amazing, Grace!

I'd like to focus on the last part of this book when the writer began her relationship with the man she hoped would be her perfect counterpart. She captured the essence of this man in a way that only a person of great depth and insight could do; it was like I was seeing through her eyes and feeling her joys and heartaches. Her writing is so down to earth and real…I felt like I was having a conversation with her. Her obvious strength as a woman does not diminish the scope of the tragedy, though; her vulnerability is often excruciating. I've heard it said that hope is just a delusion; and anyone who hopes to have a true relationship with an addict is delusional. She had every red flag there was and is clearly an extremely intelligent, life-experienced, analytical, and rational person, yet she still fell in love with Matt. How in the world can women help it when they fall in love? It's as though there is a force greater than ourselves that creates an ineffable attraction – especially with someone who was so very charismatic. I remember that his mother even told her to "Flee." But she had caught a "fever." Sometimes it was low-grade, and sometimes it was dangerous, but there is no antibiotic known for that kind of fever.I admire her so much for protecting her son, Oliver. through it all. She is of the same clan of mother lions that I belong to, so I recognize her efforts. It's so wonderful she has few regrets, actually mostly pride, in the way she raised him. She can hold her head up high; she's a remarkable woman. It doesn't hurt that God must love her so much that He gave her that exquisite son!The writer's account of the day of Matt's memorial at the temple in Santa Barbara has an ethereal quality to it. I had to read it twice. It describes grace. I should say, Grace – to give it the approbation it deserves. Grace is a rare and beautiful…a magnificent grandeur that few humans experience. It's as though we get to splash into the lake of love that surrounds us…for just a moment. I wish grace could sustain us longer; the power of our humanness surfaces way too quickly. The cycle of pleasure and pain than we are in whirls so fast, but this writer has come to a place in this life where she can end a book with loving advice to others. Incredible! I can't wait to share this book with many women who have been in her shoes, one way or the other.

About the Authors

 Margaret Schell Frazier, RN, CMA, B.S. Margaret studied nursing at Parkview Methodist School of Nursing, completing an ADN at Purdue University, then a B.S. in Health Sciences at St Francis University. She continued her formal education at Indiana State University, taking courses in technical education.

Margaret spent 13 years as an educator in the health careers field, specializing in medical assistant education. In addition to teaching mainly in medical assisting programs, she was assigned to curriculum development in pharmacology technology, physical therapy assistant, phlebotomy, massage therapy, EKG technician, and medical dictation. She also worked twice on the statewide medical assisting curriculum review committee.

As an RN, she spent over 23 years at an intercity hospital working in maternal child health, including 8 years in labor and delivery. She then transferred to the emergency department where she worked for over15 years. This experience also afforded an opportunity to work in the ambulatory care center on weekends while teaching medical assisting classes. She also worked in the office of an ENT practitioner and in addition to office duties served as a private surgical scrub.

Margaret has been a member of AAMA since 1988 and a CMA during that time. She has served the organization at all three levels, local, state, and national. Her work has been published twice in the national professional journal, and has published other books. She haspresented at several national meetings in continuing education seminars. She is recognized by schools around the country as an expert in curriculum development and implementation.  

Retirement from nursing and the teaching arena was not a retirement from the medical field. Margaret is president and consultant of M and M Consulting and still works in both areas of a physician’s office, administrative and clinical. She spends many hours at her computer writing books and in her flower shop, Margie’s Rose, where she relaxes while arranging flowers.

As early as she can remember, Margie (as she is known to her friends, students, and colleagues) has been interested in the medical field. She would read anything she could about medicine and still does. Her childhood neighbor was a physician and he encouraged her, as did her father, to keep learning about medicine and to do her best in that field.

Margaret was married in 1957. She and her husband have four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. They live on a small farm in rural northeast Indiana.

 

Connie Morgan, MEd, RN, CMA, graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1978 with a BS in Nursing and received RN licensure the same year. She was certified as a medical assistant in 1993 and remains current in skill level and certification. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Education in 1995. Connie became “hooked” on teaching when she started assisting nursingstudents during their clinical rotation. In the years since, she has taught nursing students at St. Joseph’s Diploma School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, IN, as well as the public, the general and clinical staff at Munising Memorial Hospital in Munising, MI, and medical assistant and practical nursing students at Ivy Tech Community College in Kokomo, Logansport, and Wabash, IN.

Connie has worked in a variety of clinical areas, including nursing homes and surgical, oncology, orthopedic, urology, obstetric, pediatric, intensive care, and ambulatory care settings as a nurse, and as a medical assistant in insurance, pediatric, and podiatry settings. In addition, she has worked to promote the medical assistant profession by maintaining membership in the American Association of Medical Assistants since 1993, serving as a CRB/CAAHEP surveyor since 1996, and editing articles for the magazine Certified Medical Assistant for the past few years. She continues to teach in the medical assistant program at Ivy Tech Community College.

Amazon.com Review This isn't the first biography to be written on Confederate General James Longstreet, but it's the best--and certainly the one that pays the most attention to Longstreet's performance as a military leader. Historian Jeffry D. Wert aims to rehabilitate Longstreet's reputation, which traditionally has suffered in comparison to those of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Some Southern partisans have blamed Longstreet unfairly for the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg; Wert corrects the record here. He is not uncritical of Longstreet's record, but he rightly suggests that if Lee had followed Longstreet's advice, the battle's outcome might have been different.

The facts of history cannot be changed, however, and Wert musters them on these pages to advance a bold claim: "Longstreet, not Jackson, was the finest corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia; in fact, he was arguably the best corps commander in the conflict on either side." Wert describes his subject as strategically aggressive, but tactically reserved. The bulk of the book appropriately focuses on the Civil War, but Wert also briefly delves into Longstreet's life before and after it. Most interestingly, it was framed by a friendship with Ulysses S. Grant, formed at West Point and continuing into old age. Longstreet even served in the Grant administration--an act that called into question his loyalty to the Lost Cause, and explains in part why Wert's biography is a welcome antidote to much of what has been written about this controversial figure. --John J. Wert ( Mosby's Rangers ) makes a strong case for James Longstreet (1821-1904) as the best corps commander on either side of the Civil War. A superb battle captain and a masterful tactician, he clearly recognized the limitations of the offensive under mid-19th century conditions. For Longstreet, Gettyburg in particular was not an opportunity, but a mistake. Wert argues convincingly that events vindicated Longstreet's opposition to Lee's insistence on repeatedly attacking the strong Union positions. Longstreet also recognized more clearly than most of his Confederate contemporaries that war was not an absolute. He accepted the political consequences of military defeat; his reconciliation with the restored Union brought him the open contempt of irreconcilables like Jubal Early. From Library Journal Ulysses S. Grant knew both Pillow and Longstreet. The former he mocked; the latter he praised. Two new biographies will no doubt contribute to the controversies surrounding each of these Confederate generals. Oddly enough, the inferior general has inspired the better biography. Hughes ( The Battle of Belmont: Grant Strikes South , Univ. of North Carolina Pr., 1991) and Stonesifer (history, Edinboro Univ. of Pennsylvania) offer a balanced perspective on the life of Pillow, a man usually treated simply as a standing joke. They trace with skill and compassion his career as a Tennessee Democrat, Mexican War general, and Confederate commander, giving him his due without apologizing for his shortcomings. Their treatment of his disastrous performance at Fort Donelson enriches our understanding of how Grant came to secure his first major victory. Less satisfactory is Wert's explication of the life of Longstreet, one of Lee's most prized lieutenants. It reflects Longstreet's disputatious personality, for Wert ( Mosby's Rangers , LJ 10/15/90) weighs in with his own opinions on various controversies in which the Confederate chieftain found himself, most notably why the Confederacy lost at Gettysburg. The book complements but does not replace William G. Piston's fine study of the postwar Longstreet ( Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant , Univ. of Georgia, 1987). Although these assessments break little new ground, they will be gobbled up by buffs and cognoscenti with seemingly insatiable appetites.- Brooks D. Longstreet sparks strong assessments among Civil War enthusiasts. Wert explains why.This biography tells the story of the rise and military career of the general Lee referred to as "my old warhorse." A superb fighter - perhaps the most tenacious of Lee's Corps commanders, Longstreet had a preference for the defense, or at least a defensive posture awaiting an opportunity to counter-punch. His one independent fighting command, against Burnside in East Tennessee, revealed that the General was best suited to Corps command under a Lee or other officer of strategic vision.Yet Longstreet served his cause well. Unwilling to join in the deification of Lee after the war (and even criticizing him on some matters), Longstreet also became a Republican and accepted an appointment from his old pre-war friend (now president) U.S. Grant. These moves caused a significant anti-Longstreet backlash across the South -- which taints his reputation even to this day.I must say that Wert does a good job of exploring the controversary over his reputation and examining the highlights of his career. The information in the book is significant, if less than thorough and somewhat unevenly presented. I also found the voice of the author too present in the reading -- something in the way the book is written doesn't allow it to reach it's own voice or a consistently even flow. I would give this four stars for the subject and facts and three stars for the quality of the writing.All in all, not bad and worthwhile if someone wants to acquaint themselves with Longstreet.

By A Customer Wert's biography of Longstreet is one of the most balanced and thoroughly researched books about any Civil War general that I have ever read. Wert presents in detail the many sides of Longstreet - and those with whom Longstreet served. From the first chapter Wert shows that Longstreet was a soldier to be both praised and criticized - and Wert does not hesitate to do either........ One of the many features that I liked was Wert's willingness to present many sides of an issue. Even when Wert later offers his personal opinion, the reader is made aware of evidence that would support the opposite opinion. Most refreshing in an author of military history!........ The book is packed with information and Wert obviously conducted very exhaustive research. Not the usual dry biography, I found it hard to put down each night. My only complaint with the book was that it was not longer - I longed for more....... This is a great work and most ceratinly a MUST read.

A balanced portrait of a great leader By Mike Powers "General James Longstreet, The Confederacy's Most Controversial Soldier: A Biography" is a candid, fair and balanced portrait of a man who should, but doesn't, rank at the top of any list of the greatest American military leaders. James Longstreet's place in history has always been shrouded in controversy, much of it of his own making. In the decades since the Civil War, he has traditionally been blamed by historians for the Confederate army's loss at Gettysburg, and condemned for his service in the Grant administration as a traitor to the "Lost Cause."Jeffry D. Wert's able pen (he writes in a very clear, concise and easily comprehensible style) and obviously meticulous research presents Lee's "old war-horse" as a general possessed with great strategic vision, an outstanding ability to lead troops in the field, and with tactically conservative, yet sound, instincts. Longstreet's personal flaws - his inability to control his emotions and support his superiors when he disagreed with them, and his vindictiveness toward his subordinates when they disagreed with him - are also fully explored. The author's admiration for his subject is evident throughout this book. The overall portrait that emerges is favorable - a general beloved by his troops and depended upon for his wise counsel and military skills by his boss, General Robert E. Lee; but also a military leader capable of serious misjudgments both on the field of battle, and in his dealings with both his superiors and subordinates.This is one of the better biographies of one of the major figures of the Civil War, and a book I enjoyed thoroughly. I would have preferred a bit more detail on Longstreet's life after the Civil War, but that is my only (and very minor) reservation. Highly recommended for all Civil War enthusiasts!

It's very well written and clearly organized. I am very excited about using it during my future trips to NYC. It's all too easy to walk along the street and pass by buildings and monuments, but having no idea what they are about, their significance, and history. Manhattan has so many historical gems but they are easily missed. A guide like this is needed to open up the hidden history all around us.I like that the book is also very practical. Its maps are useful for getting you there; it lists needed information like hours and admission fees as well as contact information. But the book really excels at the historical angle, telling the stories and cultural treasures of NY. I've already learned about places like the Tenement Museum, Eldridge Street Synagogue, Museum of Jewish Heritage, the oldest Jewish cemetery, the Monument to Immigrants, and Katz Deli, just to name a few.I am also looking forward to trying some of the Jewish delis that are written about in this book. Delicatessens have some delicious food!I would definitely recommend this book to residents of New York who want to explore and learn more about their amazing city. And I would recommend it highly to visitors who want to understand and appreciate the real New York.

Koskimaki Kaplan manages to weave history, practical tips and broader cultural themes touching on the immigrant experience into his thoughtful guide. He covers all the major historical sites in Manhattan, from Katz's Deli to the Jewish Museum to lesser-known places of interest such as Jewish Harlem. I found the Jewish perspective fascinating on familiar sites such as Carnegie Hall. Did you know the Jewish violinist Isaac Stern saved the institution from demolition in the 1960's? And it's possible to get a behind-the-scenes tour?I found Kaplan creates just the right blend of history, advice and wisdom for the practical traveler. No doubt he sheds light on the important contribution Jews had and continue to have on shaping the fascinating city of New York. Another point -- the book is conveniently organized neighborhood by neighborhood, so it can easily accompany any day tour. I plan to check out many of the places I found from this book, e.g. the Jewish Rialto, the Shimmel Knish Bakery and Pickle Guys. Very thoughtful book and a must read.

By Miguel Barrios The part that I like the most is the history of the first Jewish in NYC, the book tells this part with details that make it very interesting.This first edition covers most of Manhattan Jewish places, and I hope to see in the future more of places in Brooklyn and the Bronx, where there are other wonderful places to visit. For a tourist coming to the city and needs a qucik list of places to go, this is the perfect match. For the native New Yorker probably it will sound repetitive, but I find it interesting and refreshing. Thanks to this book I could find places that I didn't know were available even for non-Jewish people.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Useful for CDT exam By Amazon Customer I bought this when preparing for the CDT comprehensive exam. I have a specialty in Orthodontics, but was not as familiar with the other disciplines ( ceramics, full and partial dentures, etc), so I needed a basic text with pictures to help me orient the other specialties I would be studying for the test. This was excellent for that purpose. I found it to be basic, but accurate in relation to the Air Force Manuals as far as content. It was easy to understand and the wealth of pictures, although small, helped me to visualize unfamiliar processes in a way I could recall. I was able to pass the comprehensive on the first try. The layout was also good for review sessions, an easy text to take around with me for quick study. I will use it again to take my Full Denture written exam in March.

The author had a lot of great tips and ideas on how to make money living in an RV, which opened up my mind to a whole new world. I thought this book was definitely worth it... Its not a get rich quick scheme, a lot of the ideas portrayed in this book would probably take time and consistency, you just need to be determined and know what you're getting yourself into... Love what you do...

The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment Without Glasses by William Horatio Bates. A brilliant book written by an eye-surgeon for the masses. The book contains findings after decades of research and experimental work into various eye disorders. Even though he expected to find some errors in the old theories and beliefs used for the past 150 years, he was amazed at his own discoveries and the effect they had for the treatment of defective vision. Bates graduated A.B. from Cornell University in 1881 and received his medical degree at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1885. He formulated a theory about vision health, and published the book Perfect Sight Without Glasses in 1920. Parts of Bates' approach to correcting vision disorders were based on psychological principles, which were contrary to many of the medical theories of the time and remain so. The Bates Method still enjoys some limited acceptance as a modality of alternative medicine.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. outstanding By Last Mohican Bates, who once practiced traditional ophthalmology and held in high esteem by his collegues, eventually rejected the theories that the traditional eyecare community accepted as fact. After observations that led him to question some of the commonly held beliefs in ophthalmology and medical science in general, he began many years of experimental work and eventually had to conclude that the orthodox theories regarding the eye and sight were wrong. He taught patients with all sorts of vision and eye troubles how to cure their poor sight by the use of the mind and relaxation.Unfortunately for the world, Bates's work was generally ignored by the medical establishment and still is today, for numerous reasons. There are still many teachers of his methods throughout the world who are constantly helping people to cure their imperfect sight. They and many of their students have experienced how effective it is. I myself am not a (trained) teacher of the Bates Method, but practicing it has provided enormous benefit for my vision and mind.If you can't obtain this book here, it is always available from the publisher[...], as it has been republished and is in print.If you get this book, read it extremely carefully. The simple language belies a drastically different way of thinking than most people in our society are used to.

Lost Knowledge Uncovered By Just Christopher Most of the things that Dr. Bates talks about are completely lost on today's average opthamologist (or my doctor anyway). It is good to get some research from another source, and not feel so dependant on the current methods, which seem to require that my vision keep getting worse, until I get some disease that requires surgery, and all at a great cost to me. While sufficiently technical and specific regarding questions of the eye's construction and abnormalities due to strain, Dr. Bates' book is most clearly written and I have recommended it to a few friends.

Possibly this seller is the real thing.This book is listed on Amazon along with other versions that have been altered with the harmful PLUS LENS, Power Vision method. This book may or may not be authentic. I cannot see a full view on Amazon or Google so it's best to contact the seller first. It looks like the authentic, beneficial method.There is one 1940 version published by Emily A. Bates on the Amazon page that appears to be authentic.Search carefully for Dr. Bates books so you know are obtaining only the true, safe Bates Method. Books that contain only Dr. Bates work, or with a few modern treatments that are solely Bates teaching without use of eyeglasses, eye surgeries or drugs is the true method and it works!The picture on the cover of this book is misleading, it is not Dr. Bates. Dr. Bates cured his own vision with natural methods WITHOUT eyeglasses. He does not wear glasses. He warns people to avoid all types of glasses. Dr. Bates books alone contain the cures for myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism... and is all that a person needs to gain clear eyesight and healthy eyes without glasses.Some Authors are altering Dr. Bates book, placing harmful methods in it; they are selling a dangerous method called 'PLUS LENS, Anti-Corrective', the use of eyeglasses that cause addiction to glasses. They are selling eyeglasses with a treatment that causes cataract, detached retina and other eye problems. They are in league with eye doctors, surgeons.So; no stars for; some modern book assemblers that have altered Dr. Bates work by adding un-natural treatments to Dr. Bates book. (I am referring to the books assembled by David De Angelis, Otis Brown and others. (Example; the blue cover version that has the subtitle; 'Bonus Inside, 40 page report about the PowerVisionSystem.) Avoid all books that are altered with the harmful PowerVisionSystem,'PLUS LENS, Anti-Corrective Method'; using eyeglasses, causing addiction to glasses. They are actually selling eyeglasses, are in league with eye doctors, eye surgeons. The Plus Lens method causes cataracts, retina injury, detachment and many other eye, vision problems. Destroys the health of the eyes lens. (One of the authors developed cataract two times, astigmatism, extreme myopia, addiction to distant and reading glasses, has had lasik on his cornea and an eyeglass myopia prescription implanted in his eyes after 2 cataract surgeries. All caused by the Plus Lens method.) He tries to hide this as he advises this Harmful plus lens method to all people including children, pilots...Dr. Bates original treatments in the book are true, effective Natural Eyesight Improvement but the added modern PowerVisionSystem and Plus Lens Method are not Dr. Bates work, they are harmful. The PowerVisionSystem involves using dangerous Plus Lenses and un-natural eye stretching... exercises. Plus Lens Method causes cataract, astigmatism, retina inury, blur... Pilots, Kids, Seniors, all people avoid this dangerous method! The book assembler is the same author of another book that advises Plus Lenses and other books on the subject. It causes an addiction to reading glasses, impaired close vision and impairs the far vision.I strongly disagree with the Plus Eyeglass Lens Treatment that the assembler added to this book. It causes many eye problems, interferes with true natural healing. It is harmful to the eyes; Plus lenses are reading glasses, close vision glasses, magnifiers. I meet many seniors citizens and also younger people that have worn reading glasses for a few years or longer and it often results in cataracts, other eye damage. Eye circulation, lens, retina... health and the vision impair fast, immediately when reading glasses are used. The Plus Lens method increases this problem. Most Eye doctors are now placing a eyeglass lens prescription in the cataract replacement lens inside the eyes during cataract surgery; the person is then trapped with eyeglasses inside the eye. This maintains, increases the strain, tension, vision impairment, damages the eyes health, prevents natural eyesight improvement. The implanted eyeglass lens forces the eye, vision to remain impaired and increases impairment; when more impairment occurs or if Natural Eyesight Improvement is practiced or if the eye naturally, on its own tries to return to normal function; the eyeglass lens in the eye will not fit, work with the impaired or improved eye condition, shape, new focus of light rays. Unclear vision will occur; like trying to see through an incorrect eyeglass prescription. The eyeglass lens will have to be removed by more surgery. If the eyes lens during cataract surgery is not altered, replaced with a eyeglass lens prescription near-sight, far-sight, astigmatism, bifocal.., then Natural Eyesight Improvement may be effective.The original true Bates method alone is enough and is safe, natural. Dr. Bates would not want this harmful method attached to his book. It is completely against the Bates method.Many people have been banned from the plus lens forums, Google, Yahoo groups when they speak up and post comments stating the truth, 'that the Plus Lens has impaired their vision and their children's vision'.Please post the truth on your forum, books. Allow the many people and their children that have been injured by Plus Lenses, Anti-Corrective method and people that are still wearing eyeglasses after years of Plus Lens use to post comments on the Forum, YouTube. The forum author always responds by sounding like he is an expert, scientist and accuses me of being naive, uneducated. This is how eye doctors speak to patients when the doctor wants to sell eyeglasses, surgery and hide Natural Eyesight Improvement from the patient.I have used Natural Eyesight Improvement for 37 years, it works and is safe. I see clear close and far by using the true Bates method without glasses, no surgery.On a forum, a co-author of the plus lens author's book, advises this Plus Lens method to children, pilots, everyone. He has used it for years since youth and under pressure from members posted the truth; that he developed cataracts, has a myopia eyeglass lens prescription implanted in his eyes by surgery, had lasik, still has unclear vision, still wears the plus lenses. Please stop this harmful method before you experience more eye, vision injuries.Books by Dr. Bates only, 'without alterations containing harmful methods' are great books. The publishers of some of the books on Amazon sell the authentic copy. But others, which are fake are listed in on the same page with the authentic book. Choose carefully.
